However, the globalised nature of our world which has become interconnected and interdependent, spawned by increasing technological changes, underlines the importance of analysing journalism practices and new media in Nigeria from a global perspective. Theories of the present global media ecology have therefore, become unsustainable and unsatisfactory (Cottle, 2009). Globalisation opens up the opportunity to study journalism practice and culture as a hybrid (McMillin, 2007), hence the need for a definition of journalism that can reflect and accommodate the global political differences and culture (Wasserman and de Beer, 2009). Research in journalism studies around the world consistently highlights the existence of similarities and differences across cultures which signify the natural diversities in our world. Previous studies on journalism ethics and routine...

Being a qualitative essay, copious quotations from SAB's works were done to test each unit of the analysis such as education, politics, news commentary, travel/tourism, editorial, poetry etc. A total of 13 albums representing 10% of SAB's works were selected and graded on their contents based on their suitability to each of the categories above. Findings however revealed that music of SAB is journalism. Apart from informing, educating and entertaining his audience, SAB also employed his music for agenda-setting and social responsibility purposes in media theoretical framework. The criticism aspect of his music had played the watch-dog and advocacy roles of the media on the populace and the government especially during the military juntas of Gen. Muhamadu Bihari, Ib...

In recent years there has been an increase in African ethnic media publications in Western Europe as an alternative platform for a distinct, ethnic and niche audience in a diaspora context. Yet relatively little is known about the way in which the media practitioners and audiences perceive the role of these ethnic media in the articulation and re-articulation of collective identities. Academic assertions in this regard remain by and large theoretical and at a surface level. Very few studies have empirically investigated the perceptions of the journalists, owners and audiences of these ethnic media. A number of issues have thus remained under-explored, such as the link between media consumption and the construction of individual identities. This study identifies and examines these issues through case study of two African ethnic news...

In recent years there has been an increase in African ethnic media publications in Western Europe as an alternative to mainstream media. Yet relatively little is known about the content and role of these ethnic media in the articulation and re-articulation of collective identities. Academic assertions in this area remain theoretical. Very few studies have empirically investigated the content of these media. For instance, how diaspora media represent African ethnic minorities and how do these representations differ from those of mainstream media?A number of issues have thus remained under-explored, such as the extent to which ethnic media (re)construct the identities of the community they serve. Studies of the content of these media can help to identify and proffers solution to these challenges. At the same time, relatively little is known about representation of various groups in these media. This s...

Likewise, our media landscape has changed dramatically in the past several decades. According to Harcup and O’Neil (2001) celebrity was one of the redefinitions of the “taxonomy of news values for the twenty-first century”.While journalists who specialized in celebrity news say they see more demand for their work, others have argued that such stories lack journalistic reasons.Using celebrity case studies from recent publications in the Nigerian SUN newspaper and interview with editors, this article seeks to demonstrate that the pervasiveness and volume of coverage of celebrity has risen exponentially over the years. We argue that celebrity and entertainment news values have risen much higher up the hierarchy of news, guaranteeing extensive coverage, if combined with other news values. The adoption and dissemination of a story should be ...
