On the central plateau of Pyrgi Hill, excavations by the University of Crete (Sector II-Central) revealed a cult building that functioned from the Archaic to Roman times, confirming that the acropolis of the ancient city was located there. At the center of the cella of the temple of the acropolis, an underground chamber was found, sealed by the Roman-paved floor. The upper part of the chamber consists of a cylindrical monolithic opening, within which a stone element and numerous stone fragments—carved from local limestone—were discovered. The painstaking process of joining the fragments largely restored a monolithic screw with a head diameter of 1.17 m, while the monolithic opening of the underground chamber was found to be its corresponding nut. This system secured the chamber by sealing it. The metal-lined deep holes found around the periphery of the nut were also attributed to the sealing/ securing system. This construction was identified as the thesauros of the temple, and according to excavation data, it dates back to the Hellenistic period. The article presents a detailed analysis of the screw-nut system, focusing on its geometry and the screwing method. Three-dimensional models of both the existing and restored forms of the system provide insight into this unique technological achievement, aiming to understand how it worked and its role within the ancient temple of the acropolis of Eleutherna.

in 1985, on the Central Plateau of the Pyrgi hill, the acropolis of the ancient city (Sector II-Central). An Archaic temple and
an imposing Tetraconch, a few meters further N, were brought to light during the excavations. Although the initial use and date
of the construction of the Tetraconch remains unclear, it was converted into a church in the 7th century. These buildings seem to
have formed landmarks of Eleutherna’s acropolis during different phases of its history, demonstrating the enduring public nature
of this topos which was directly connected to the political and religious functions of the city down the centuries. Their architectural
remains, amongst which stands out the thesauros of the temple with its sophisticated and mechanically innovative cover and
locking device, along with other vestiges, including ritual depositions of feasting remains and votives, are presented here in detail
for the first time. Through their study, we will try to explore the continuities and disruptions in the sacred topography of the
acropolis at Εleutherna and to set them within the broader socio-political context of their time.

It offers a multidisciplinary investigation of the spatial and social practices that produced Byzantine concepts of neighbourhood and afforded dynamic interactions between different actors, elite and non-elite. Authors further consider neighbourhoods as political entities, examining how collectivities formed in Byzantine neighbourhoods translated into political action. By both acknowledging the unique position of Constantinople and giving serious attention to the varieties of provincial experience, the contributors consider regional factors (social, economic, and political) that formed the ties of local communities to the state and illuminate the mechanisms of empire. Beyond its Byzantine focus, this volume contributes to broader discussions of premodern urbanism by drawing attention to the spatial dimension of social life and highlighting the involvement of multiple agents in city-making.

of the years 2013-2016 on the Central Plateau of the Acropolis of
Eleutherna. It is the continuation of the account of the results published
in Πρακτικά του Αρχαιολογικού Έργου Κρήτης 3. The article is divided into three parts, according to where the excavation was focused:
a. The Byzantine Quarter (southern sector) – Roman bath. On the
southern part of the Central Plateau architectural structures related
to the Byzantine district of the 7th and 8th centuries were revealed.
As evident from the work of previous years, the Byzantine buildings
were built on the ruins of a public bath of Roman times. The account
examines in detail the buildings discovered east of a road running
parallel to that of the fortification wall on the east slope. Where excavation went deep enough, areas of the bath were discovered (such as an area with a hypocaust).
b. Christian church. Excavation continued with the investigation of the
surrounding area of the church on the Central Plateau: east of the
apse of the sanctuary, where under an extensive layer of destruction
a burial of importance was found.
c. The enclosing fortifications. The trials made at the base of wall on the
east slope revealed that the fortifications of the early Byzantine period
were set directly on the natural bedrock. No foundation trench was
found. The western slope of the Acropolis was extensively cleaned to
document the fortification located on a lower terrace just below the
excavated area of the Central Plateau. Part of a fortified enclosure
about 50 m long was discovered, in which two construction phases
can be clearly distinguished: one probably of the Hellenistic period
and one of the early Byzantine period.
A particularly important numismatic find is presented in a separate
section. This is an early Islamic fals, minted in Egypt in the first decades
of the 8th century. Thus, it dates back to before the Arab conquest of
Crete. This is one of only a few examples of 8th century Arabic issues
found on the island, and the only one found during a systematic excavation.

In the following essays, Byzantine sculpture is approached in its various forms, iconographies, techniques, and typologies, over a chronology that spans from the Proto Byzantine period to the Palaiologan era. From the point of view of artistic geography, ample space is given to works of art distributed in areas that are also considerably distant from each other: from the Balkans to the capital Constantinople, including peripherical areas if compared to the main centers of cultural elaboration.

Through an interdisciplinary approach, combining a careful reading of historical and archaeological evidence with the spatial analysis offered by the application of new technologies in archaeological research, the project highlights the developments of Cretan settlements from the fourth century to the early ninth century. In particular, we will examine the data categories and discuss how they are brought together for analysis in a Geographical Information System.

This work describes how geophysical methods can be used in order to map such hydraulic structures enlightening at the same time past and completely unexplored archaeological hypotheses. To this direction a high resolution surface 3D ERT survey was completed at the site of "Anemomylos" on the hill Pyrgi, the Acropolis of Eleutherna in Central Crete (Greece). The analysis and the 3D inversion of the data revealed the existence of a new structure that is either a cistern or a basin to the management of water. This lies between the aqueduct tunnel and the two existing cisterns verifying a past archaeological hypothesis.

5 1 Αντίγραφο του ναυτικού χάρτη του κόλπου της Ερημούπολης υπάρχει στη βιβλιοθήκη της Γαλλικής Αρχαιολογικής Σχολής της Αθήνας. were built on the ruins of a public bath of Roman times. The account
examines in detail the buildings discovered east of a road running
parallel to that of the fortification wall on the east slope.

The scientific and scholarly study concerned with the search for material traces of the past comp... more The scientific and scholarly study concerned with the search for material traces of the past comprise a significant level towards the cultural heritage management and preservation. Ground based and satellite/aerial technologies can be utilized for capturing both the dynamics and the evolution of the cultural landscapes creating a digital archive for the management of cultural resources. The research directive that has been initiated by FORTH and is under the auspices of various cultural and research foundations aims towards the establishment of a best practice guide for the application of geo-information technologies for the study, management and preservation cultural landscapes. In the archaeological site of "Malia",, conventional photogrammetric and laser scanning techniques have been carried out in collaboration with the French School of Athens, in order to provide a 3D model of the "Magasins Dessenne" area which have subsequently been backfilled for conservation reasons . The different approaches have provided a realistic orthorectified model that can be used for the further studies of the monuments of the particular section of the site. In "Eleftherna", on the hill of "Pyrgi", the focus has been to map the aqueduct of the ancient town through the application of electrical resistivity tomography. The continuation of the water tunnel which lies 8m below the surface towards the south where two large water reservoirs have been cut into the rock was examined through a high resolution three-dimensional (3-D) Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) method. Even though the data processing and interpretation with 3-D resistivity imaging/inversion algorithms reconstructed with significant detail the near surface features, it was unable to give further insight regarding the southern end of the water tunnel due to the limited resolution of the surface ERT and its inability to resolve the tunnel within the specific environmental regime. The particular controlled experiments set the foundation of a guide that will promote the optimal application of the particular techniques based on the current progress of the geo-information technologies and that will ultimately function as a road-guide for the archaeologists' own usage.
