Hrmmm... IM questions My company's been checking into instant messaging and we're thinking about using one of the two following products:

  1. Windows Messenger

  2. Skype

I *like* skype, but it's a little light on collaboration tools. Still, my company is divided into two sites and telephone communication is kind of expensive in these parts... Biggest problem for us is that it lacks a 'chat-room' feature. Also, I know that it's not meant for this but it'd be nice to have a "whiteboard" feature... An API's not out yet but I know there are third parties that write plugins for it so -- how do they do that? How can *I* do that?

Windows Messenger has the chat-room functionality, but the voice communication features are a little light... Plus, you can't whiteboard or share apps with many people at a time, so that's a bit of a shame. I'd like to see if I can write plugins in C# for it, anyone given that a whirl? Is it a pain?

Does anyone know of a free (possibly open-source) product that does chatting/online collaboration?
