This PhD thesis deals with the genealogy of the agrarian landscape in Galicia (northwest corner of Spain), its organization, social importance and changes through time until the present day. Archaeological and ethnographic methodologies are combined in order to study forms and elements of the agrarian landscape, mainly terraces.
The results of our research indicate that the origin of terrace agricultural system can be dated to the first centuries of the Early Middle Ages, and it was the beginning of the rural landscape transformation that shaped the traditional organization of the rural landscape still in use today in many areas of Galicia.
In order to enhance the information provided by the archaeological research, ethnographic methodologies are applied to understand the social behaviours and changing processes at present times, when new ways and purposes about the rural landscape can be detected.
The main case studies are connected with: fieldworks related to public sector building infrastructures such as a gas pipeline network (Red de Gasificación de Galicia 1995- 99); a cultural complex building (A Cidade da Cultura, Santiago de Compostela 2001); a wind park (sierra de O Suído, Pontevedra-Ourense 2003-05); and fieldworks in the framework of research projects at the Spanish National Park (Isla de Ons, Pontevedra 2010-13) and at a village in the Santiago de Compostela’s pilgrimage route (Olveiroa, A Coruña 2009-12). These case studies provide a detailed information about the building processes of the agrarian landscape in Galicia.

(ENG) The landscape is a product of each particular society’s ways of being, thinking and acting.... more (ENG) The landscape is a product of each particular society’s ways of being, thinking and acting. The landscape we see in Galicia today is the result of our ways of being, thinking and acting, but also those of the people who lived here in the past. Many of the things that we consider to be the most typical elements of the Galician landscape are a product or effect of human action, and not only of what we refer to as “nature”. This book is a kind of archaeological “atlas” of the cultural landscapes of Galicia, and here we say ‘a kind’ because it is not an atlas in the conventional sense, containing a series of maps: instead, what this book does is to describe the different types of landscape that appeared over much of the history of what is now Galicia, from late prehistory (beginning of the Neolithic) to mediaeval times. The story begins with what we know as the traditional landscape. It identifies its typical elements that are present or missing from the landscapes that preceded it, and which helped to create it. And so, archaeological landscapes are something that does not exist; their remains are either largely incorporated in subsequent forms of the landscape, or lie lost and forgotten (“invisible”) beneath them. It is precisely for this reason that we refer to them as “archaeological landscapes”. The narrative we present here is a human story from the Anthropocene period, a concept that defines a new geological stage marked by human influence of the Earth’s different systems, a stage in which sociocultural action has actively altered the world, replacing a natural environment with an increasingly artificial cultural environment. THIS PDF DOCUMENT IS A SELECTION OF SOME PAGES OF THE TEXT TO GIVE AN OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE BOOK CONTENTS.
Specifically this presentation deals with the study of cultivation terraces and embankments, understood as artificial elements either intentionally built or side effects of human labor and conceived to enlarge the spaces of cultivation and/or to facilitate the spread of certain crops. A number of new radiocarbon dates will allow to argue that this kind of structures can be viewed as true chronological indicators of the different moments and processes of action of peasant communities over the environment. Simultaneously I will make an attempt to clarify the different types of structures found in the area of analysis, by looking at aspects such as the stratigraphical sequences, the processes of formation and/or construction, the presence or absence of specific formal elements, etc. The work carried out has also taken into account other archaeological elements such as pits, which, after their contexts, position and shape, can be related to old agrarian elements currently invisible on surface.

The area comprises a basin around the Sar river that holds a traditional agrarian landscape that preserves in a fairly good shape the remains of a long time peasant work. Along with cultivation terraces and fields, a number of architectural features are scattered on the area, many of them related to the management and distribution of water. The Sar river, and the different channels, reservoirs and water mills related to it, are the basic features that shape the whole landscape here. In the very recent past, a progressive ruin of the area has begun to grew, which is visible in the abandonmet of both the river course itself and its environments. A thorough knowledge of that space would allow for a better understanding of its origins and historical value, that, in its turn, would allow a more coherent development of new uses in the area.

This study seeks to deepen the understanding of the cultural space through surface archaeological survey, and to recognize the different cultural chronological stages that led to the current configuration of this unique area of islands. The text is organised into three sections. In the first one, the guidelines and objectives of the study are presented. In the second one, the methodology followed and the cultural assets identified through during the fieldwork are analysed and discussed. Finally, the vulnerability of several sites identified is discussed and evaluated in their coastal contex.""
