CLRD Experts on methane talk at CIMFR
18 October 2011
DHANBAD: Experts of fuel and mining from different parts of the country on Monday debated on the use of methane as source of energy and felt the gas from coal mines in the country can be tapped through “carbon capture” to help reduce air pollution.
A workshop on coal bed methane has been jointly organized by the Central
Institute of Mining and Fuel Research and the US’s United Protection Agency from Monday. About 35 experts are attending the workshop which will conclude on October 21.
Amlendu Sinha, the CIMFR director, while inaugurating the workshop said earlier methane was left in the environment causing air pollution. Now, technologies have been developed through which alternate application of the gas can be made. Methane is hazardous if it is left in the coalmines as it can lead to fire, and it can be hazardous, too, if left in the environment. Now, the scientists have developed carbon capturing through which the methane left in the air can be captured and used as source of energy for the vehicles too….
SC refuses to lift ban on mining by Lafarge in Meghalaya
26 April 2010
The Supreme Court today refused to lift the stay on limestone mining by French cement giant Lafarge in the forests of Meghalaya till the Ministry of Environment and Forests submits a report on environmental compliance.
“Till the time appropriate reports are submitted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, we are not inclined to accept the report of MoEF and permit the mining,” a Special Forest Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices S H Kapadia and Aftab Alam said.
The Ministry had recently filed an affidavit before the court stating that it had given the go-ahead on the condition that the company implement various welfare schemes for the locals.
The Bench was of the view that the Ministry’s report giving clearance for mining has not appreciated the recommendations of an expert committee that called for comprehensive bio-engineering plan, periodical assessment of flora and fauna and a time bound plan for biodiversity conservation of the area.
The court said it would consider lifting of the stay only after the four conditions mentioned in the report of the expert committee are fulfilled.
Among them, Lafarge has to submit detailed comprehensive bio-engineering plan of the area as per the suggestion of Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Research, Nagpur and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Nagpur…..Read complete news item……..

Research light on coal use – Pilot plant to conduct study funded by CMPDIL
By Praduman Choubey
27 August 2009
DHANBAD: More information will soon be available on usage of high ash Indian coal for various purposes, thanks to the Digwadih campus of the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR).
Funded by Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), the institute is conducting a study on different types of high ash coal to offer suggestions on handling particular coal types, including those causing pollution.
A “pressurised bed gasification pilot plant” has been set up at the institute for carrying out the study. The scientists are focussing on problems faced during gasification — the process of extracting energy — from coal. After analysing the problems, they will suggest a technology to handle particular coal types…Read complete news item..
