This paper argues for a move away from punitive justice systems to the practices of restorative j... more This paper argues for a move away from punitive justice systems to the practices of restorative justice and is framed through story. In particular, the story of young Kalief Browder is highlighted to demonstrate both the multitude of ways the criminal justice system is flawed, and the urgent need for alternative community based justice practices, not merely for civilians i.e. victims, offenders, and their families, but also for servants of the law who are in some instances both protector and offender interchangeably depending on the racial dynamics and social location of those they supposedly serve.
