Research paper thumbnail of The Trinity: Prototype of Real Existence or Danger to Political Wellbeing? Tanner, Volf, and Yannaras in Conversation

Religions, 2021

Her primary concern is that the Trinity, by definition, cannot serve as a “model” for human socio-political organization. Miroslav Volf, while sharing Tanner’s sense that Trinitarian political theologies are fraught, nevertheless, maintains that the Trinity can serve as a “vision” for human socio-political relations, albeit not as a “program”. This article brings Tanner and Volf into conversation with Eastern Orthodox philosopher-theologian Christos Yannaras, whose Trinitarian political theology regards the Trinity as the “prototype” or “archetype” of a mode of existence in which humans can participate by transcending their natures, with the aim of realizing truth. This article argues that Yannaras offers a novel way of conceptualizing Trinitarian political theology which escapes Tanner and Volf’s criticisms, on the one hand, and offers Social Trinitarianism a fresh and fertile perspective that could advance its discourse.

The first is the intractable challenge of internal diversity, which makes the notion of a theological dialogue between 'Orthodoxy' and 'Evangelicalism' highly problematic. The second is the asymmetric nature of the theological differences that divide the two traditions. The article proposes that a framework for theological dialogue based on particularity and specificity, and which acknowledges the asymmetrical theological relationship between Orthodox and Evangelicals, can help to advance the dialogue beyond a forum for merely identifying and clearing up misperceptions.

The value of Orthodox political theology to wider ecumenical discussion of politics and theology rests in the unique insights it is able to bring to common questions, such as the Orthodox Church’s place and role in liberal democracies, by virtue of its unique political contexts (post-Communism, Byzantine historical legacy) and theological paradigms (theosis, symphonia). The article notes the explicit and implicit influence of Western political theology on the nature and shape of contemporary Orthodox political theology and suggests that, as such, the latter can be regarded as forming a new and integral part of the former.

Studies in Christian Ethics, 2019

This article argues that the formally similar conceptions of political authority provided in Oliv... more This article argues that the formally similar conceptions of political authority provided in Oliver O'Donovan's Resurrection and Moral Order and The Desire of the Nations appear to assume different ontologies of political authority. The former account conceives political authority as a special use of natural authorities found in the created order, where 'authority' is defined as what it is that evokes free and intelligible human action. The latter account, however, appears to attribute the existence of political authority exclusively to divine providence. I contend that these two accounts of political authority are ostensibly in tension. I also argue that O'Donovan's subsequent 'providentialist' account of political authority is unable to explain how political authority can evoke free and intelligible action in political communities. I maintain that O'Donovan can remove this apparent tension by returning the essence of political authority to creation, as he did in Resurrection and Moral Order, and then regard the Christ-event as redeeming political authority rather than merely restricting its historical function to judgment, as he argues in The Desire of the Nations. The emergence of O'Donovan's 'Christian liberalism' could then be regarded as the 'work of divine providence in history' facilitated by the redemption of the natural authorities in the created order. ). O'Donovan describes WJ as a 'sequel' to DN and the second 'phase … in a single extended train of thought', p. x. 5. Studies in Christian Ethics 11.2 (1998). For some recent contributions to the secondary literature on O'Donovan, see Robert Song and Brent Waters (eds), . I am indebted to the critical engagement of these three scholars with O'Donovan's theology of political authority.

One of the Orthodox world’s most important thinkers, Christos Yannaras, who has written extensively on politics, is relatively unknown amongst English-speaking Protestant and Catholic theological circles because his substantive work on politics is only available in Greek. This essay provides an introduction to one of Yannaras’ most important works on political theology, The Inhumanity of Right, which has not been translated into English. Yannaras approaches politics through his person-centric anthropology and relational ontology, viewing the purpose and goal of politics as “authentic existence” in communion with the Trinitarian God. The essay seeks to demonstrate, via Yannaras’ political thought, that Orthodox theologians bring a unique perspective to common political problems and challenges and that the field of political theology would be enriched from a deeper engagement with Orthodox political theology.

In this chapter I suggest an explanation for why an understanding of the " jihadist current " —a term used by jihadist intellectual Abu Mus'ab al-Suri—has proven so illusive for the West. The chapter's central contention is that the principal obstacle to a Western understanding of the " jihadist current " is a significant clash of conceptuality between today's jihadists and the West. Western analysts and scholars instinctively analyze the phenomenon of Islamist terrorism with the Western conceptual tools with which they analyze all historical developments and social phenomena. The tools in question relate to the research methodologies, theories, categories, and concepts developed and applied in the Western academic disciplines of political science, sociology,

Research paper thumbnail of Christian Political Theology in an Age of Discontent Mediating Scripture, Doctrine, and Political Reality Foreword by Carl Raschke

In critical dialogue with political theologians and political philosophers past and present, we explore the origins, meaning, and purpose of Christian political theology in an age of growing discontent with the once-impregnable liberal democratic order of yesteryear. Approaching politics as both art and science, this book lays a challenge at the feet of political theologians to offer a theological account of politics that is genuinely illuminating of political reality and efficacious for the faithful who seek to operate within it.

However, until recently the English-speaking scholar did not have first-hand access to the main bulk of his work: in spite of the relatively early English translation of his The Freedom of Morality (1984), most of his books appeared in English fairly recently - such as Person and Eros (2007), Orthodoxy and the West (2006), Relational Ontology (2011) or The Schism in Philosophy (2015). In this volume, chapters shall examine numerous aspects of Yannaras' contributions to Orthodox theology, philosophy and political thought, based on his relational ontology of the person, later popularised in the Anglophone sphere by John Zizioulas. From political theology to Heidegger and the philosophy of language, from Yannaras' critique of religion to the patristic grounding of the theology of the person and from Orthodoxy to the West, this volume comprises a panorama of Christos Yannaras' transdisciplinary contributions.

Long before Jean-Luc Marion's God without Being, Christos Yannaras was arguing for a retrieval of Dionysian apophaticism as a corrective to the onto-theological trajectory of philosophical thought. For this reason and more, Yannaras is one of the most important Orthodox thinkers of the twentieth century, and perhaps the most understudied, in spite of the fact that his work is now available in Norman Russell's excellent English translations. This collection of essays offers critically appreciative engagement with Yannaras's unique insights into contemporary discussions on political, theological, and philosophical questions. For students and scholars looking for a perspective on a variety of themes that disrupts the status quo, this is a must-read book.

Although Christos Yannaras has been one of the most important contemporary Orthodox thinkers for many decades, systematic engagement with his work outside Greece has only recently begun through the increasing availability of his books in translation. The publication of this brilliant collection of essays analysing his thinking in the fields of political theory, philosophy and theology is most opportune – a landmark in the reception of Yannaras' thinking.

This symposium, put together by Sotiris Mitralexis, is the first comprehensive attempt to discuss the wide-ranging work of Christos Yannaras, embracing the philosophical, epistemological, ethical, and political aspects of his work, all undergirded by his relational ontology of persons. It is by no means uncritical, but in a positive vein, and should lead to a wider engagement with Yannaras' thought in the English-speaking world.

This volume seeks to explore the intersection of theology, philosophy and the public sphere not by referring the social and political to ethics and deontology as is often the case, but rather to ontology itself, to the very nature of beings. The meaning of history and historicity is most pertinent to this enquiry and is approached here both from the perspective of social reality and from the perspective of ontology. Joining together contributions focusing on theory of the public sphere and metaphysics, chapters explore subjects as diverse as the political implications of the Incarnation, the paradox between ontology and history, politically left and right appropriations of Christianity, the fecundity of Maximus the Confessor’s insights for a contemporary political philosophy, modern Orthodox political theology focusing on Christos Yannaras and numerous thematic areas that together form the mosaic of the enquiry in question.

This is because we all, consciously or unconsciously, refract the multivariate political reality we live, or more often observe, through political filters. These filters perform the functional task of reducing complex political events to a comfortably manageable set of coherent and interrelated variables that create a plausible and meaningful picture of reality without being so demanding that they cannot be consumed and digested within the limits of the increasingly superficial existence we call post-modernity.

The New Polis, 2019

The political narrative regarding Jordan Peterson now appears set in stone-he is an ideological w... more The political narrative regarding Jordan Peterson now appears set in stone-he is an ideological warrior of the right. Fans and detractors alike seem to agree on this much. The only residual dispute, still capable of generating enough friction to power a small town, is whether this political identity renders him a messiah or a Führer. This, much like knowledge of the universe, depends entirely on one's point of observation. To those on the left, Peterson is the leader of a dangerous political cult of angry, sexist, transphobic, racist young men descending, like the hordes of Genghis Khan, upon the civilized world intent on rape and pillage. To those on the right, he is a martyr in the advanced stages of beati!cation and the savior of a lost generation in a fading civilization. The truth? His political philosophy is more enigmatic than either his acolytes or despisers care to acknowledge, or perhaps can see. Peterson's actual political philosophy is rather obscure, at least to those who believe a political philosophy worth the name must consist of more than an opinion on the pronoun ze. There are three reasons for resisting the caricature of Peterson's politics in either its hagiographic or demonizing registers. First, there is his consistent reticence and circumspection regarding the contours of his political philosophy. Second, there are the distorting e"ects of his ubiquitous media appearances, which tend to re#ect the political preoccupations of interviewers who set the terms of discussion. Thirdly, there is the ideological predilections of his legion of followers who use his image, content, and words in ways which to do not necessarily re#ect his actual political thought. To be clear, I do not contend that Peterson is a misunderstood radical progressive at heart. I simply advance the modest thesis that his political philosophy, which evidence suggests does sit at some latitudinal distance to the right of the conventional, if increasingly ill-de!ned, political spectrum, is more complex than prevailing caricatures suggest. In pursuit of this thesis, I will adopt an unfashionably agnostic perspective as to the relative merits of his political ideas and their social impact. Those with a penchant for Peterson hagiography, or demonography, can consult the abundant content available in both categories. The idea that Peterson is at all reticent and circumspect with regard to his political views will strike some (perhaps many) as hopelessly naïve. This is a man, after all, who shot to public prominence on the back of his opposition to the mandated usage (as he saw it) of gender pronouns. I do not deny that his stance in relation to this particular issue situates him securely in the company of those who proudly identify themselves as conservative. Search …

But what does Political Theology have to do with "political theology" as we understand that term today? I will argue that it has very little to do with political theology. In fact, I will argue that Schmitt had little to do with the emergence of political theology as a "discipline," "subject," or "discourse" (call it what you will) in English-language scholarship.

In particular, it needs to engage more deeply with an analysis of politics qua politics, with secular political thought and with secular political history.

Osama bin Laden’s attack on the United States led to the destruction of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the erosion of al-Qaida and ultimately his own death. The putative caliphate announced by Islamic State never managed to expand beyond select parts of Syria and Iraq and has been in retreat virtually ever since leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi made the announcement.

Western counterterrorism resolve remains resolute. Most Muslim countries remain US allies. Western civilisation is not on the verge of collapse ― at least, not because of anything jihadists have done. And the majority of Muslims remain ambivalent, disinterested or opposed to the jihadist objectives set in their name.

On the one hand, there are those who argue that Islamist terrorism is solely about religion and therefore all Muslims are potential terrorists in waiting. On the other hand, there are those who argue that Islam has absolutely nothing to do with the violence committed in its name. This Op-Ed argues that both positions are untenable and that the truth is a more nuanced mixture of the two.

(Vitezslav Vylicil / iStock / Getty Images) All political thought tends towards heresy. Not in the semantically corrupt sense of a condemnable idea that traduces some doctrine of orthodoxy, but in the original Greek sense of "choice" (hairesis). As Orthodox theologian Alexander Schmemann explained it, heresy denotes (or at least once denoted) "the affirmation of one … element at the expense of others, the breaking up of the catholicity of Truth." Political thought tends towards heresy in this Greek sense for the fact that it seems invariably to emphasise a part of political reality at the expense of total political reality. That is to say that political thought-particularly in its most dogmatised form, ideology-tends to focus on one or several aspects of catholic political experience, one or several political concepts amid a more extensive repertoire, or one or several politically relevant processes from among a more complex network.

Comprising a decade's worth of research on the use of religious symbolism in ancient cities by rulers and kings, this book accounts for the shift in this symbolism between the ancient pagan world and Byzantium. It demonstrates that in the latter it was the image of Christ -- specifically of Christ Pantokrator -- that represented the highest aspirations of civilisation in a way that overthrew the ruler cult of pagan antiquity. The book begins with a chapter on Mesopotamia -- where the first cities emerged -- and continues with Egypt, Greece, Rome, Israel, before addressing Christianity in the lengthiest chapter, and finally Christianity's impact on Rome and Constantinople.
