The present study assessed daily functioning in MCI individuals (amnestic [aMCI] and nonamnestic [naMCI]) relative to those with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and healthy controls (NC). Twenty AD participants, 14 aMCI, 12 naMCI, and 30 healthy controls were administered the Direct Assessment of Functional Status (DAFS). The AD group performed poorer than all groups on all DAFS subscales. The aMCI group performed poorer than controls on the shopping subtests, while the naMCI group performed poorer than controls on only the free recall shopping. Finally, DAFS subscales discriminated the AD and aMCI groups well, but only recognition shopping discriminated between naMCI and aMCI individuals. These findings suggest that circumscribed ADL deficits distinguish subtypes of MCI and AD.

It is a structured program of undergraduate research training and mentoring in which COR students receive stipends, tuition support, resources for research, funds for travel to conferences, courses in research methods and professional development, research mentoring by faculty members, and a research internship at a nonprofit mental-health agency. Does it, in fact, improve the learning outcomes of under-represented students who aspire to pursue doctoral programs in mental health? Assessments of the 12 years of the program at California State University Northridge indicate that the answer is yes--COR students gained skills in the application of quantitative and qualitative research methods and utilized their skills to apply and succeed in graduat...

Previous research on caloric messages on menus has been inconsistent. Methods Participants (N=231, 54.5% males, Mage = 19.7) were asked to complete questionnaires after selecting a hypothetical meal from mock menus that included calorie information. Half of those participants were randomly selected to complete a calculator that estimates calories needed daily to maintain current body weight at the very beginning of the session. A between-subjects ANCOVA was performed on total calories chosen to examine the influence of gender, menu message (2,000 recommended daily caloric intake vs. no message), and calorie calculator condition (completed vs not completed), adjusting for the covariates of How knowledgeable do you think you are about nutrition? and How often do you make healthy meal choices? Results The covariates were significantly related to total calories chosen, p<...
