“A bold and ambitious reading that respects the text of Job as much as it does the texts of Frankl, the book uses Frankl to construct a new hermeneutic of reading.”
— C. Fred Alford, Professor Emeritus, University of Maryland, College Park, and author of “After the Holocaust: The Book of Job, Primo Levi, and the Path to Affliction.”
“It is destined to become a classic both due to its original line of thought and the rarely found blend of sensitivity and knowledge so impressively present throughout its chapters.”
— Prof. Dr. Alexander Batthyány, Endowed Viktor Frankl Chair for Philosophy and Psychology, Liechtenstein.

The earliest English glossary of logotherapy appeared 40 years prior to the current endeavor. It is an unattributed work believed to be by Joseph Fabry, first editor The International Forum for Logotherapy, entitled "Glossary of terms used in logotherapy" (1977) in Viktor Frankl: Festival of Meaning, Uniquest 7, pp. 8-11.

If done in accordance with the principles described, the result will be to reveal fresh meaning in selected texts, and to advance logotherapy itself as a tool for human understanding.

Paradoxical intention is applied in three, one-hour sessions to a patient diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and suffering from intrusive thoughts of blasphemy during religious practices. When combined with relaxation training, the symptoms remit by the end of the third session. The patient remains symptom-free at a six-week follow-up appointment. The author finds that the application of paradoxical intention in the clinic is consistent with the research literature.

The purpose of the Congress was to provide an overview of what currently exists in the field of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis and, from that solid foundation, determine themes that logotherapy must address as it moves into the future.

First, each article will be noted and discussed in chronological order. Then, the development and function of the pattern as a poetic device will be discussed. Tabulation on the frequency and types of the Pivot Pattern will follow along with some examples. Finally, each occurrence of the Pivot Pattern in Psalm 119 will be examined separately. Following Dahood, I will present examples as tricola. Other than this, the terminology used will be Watson's. Unreferenced translations are my own.

Viktor Frankl’s body of work does this with respect to the major theories and movements of his day. It falls to us, however, to continue this work with respect to the major theories and movements of our own day. Chief among these movements is neuropsychiatry when it asserts that human consciousness is nothing more than the mechanical-like workings of our neural apparatus. An excellent way for the contemporary logotherapist to become familiar with the contours and positions in the current debate over the nature of human consciousness is by reading the pair of books herein reviewed: : Non-Reductionistic Approaches to the Ontology of Consciousness, edited by Alexander Batthyány and Avshalom Elitzur (2006, Ontos Verlag) and Irreducibly Conscious: Selected Papers on Consciousness, edited by Alexander Batthyány and Avshalom Elitzur (2009, Universitätsverlag Winter). Both books offer a treasure trove of insight.

He makes the case that those ineffable experiences, variously called spiritual, transcendent, or religious, are universal to the human species. As such, they are associated with a human biological process which is present in us all and which is given expression through the languages and images of our unique cultures. Acknowledging that he comes from a position of faith, Hay offers an insightful analysis of the reasons why spiritual expression is so often suppressed in Western European and American culture. Hay concludes by offering suggestions on how spiritual awareness can be revived in our society.

This presentation accomplishes two distinct tasks. First, it defines Frankl’s theory as a formal hermeneutic and situations the resulting logotherapy hermeneutic within the broader field of hermeneutics. Second, it tests the hermeneutic through a reading of the Biblical Book of Job. Key issues emerge through three movements in the book. The first movement addresses the existential vacuum and the rejection of reductionism, nihilism, and psychologism. The second movement addresses the dual nature of meaning; an association is revealed between Frankl’s understanding of meaning and the Jobian understanding of wisdom. The third movement involves an exploration of freedom, ultimate meaning, and self-transcendence.
