A BS TR AC T Annually, the Operations Committee (OpCo) of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging ... more A BS TR AC T Annually, the Operations Committee (OpCo) of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) presents a two-day meeting in Washington, DC, to advise participants in the PCC programs of what they need to know to work cooperatively with all the other catalogers in the program. This year, as last year, an online meeting replaced the in-person meeting, but the purpose was the same. This Listen and Learn session will update Atla participants in the NACO, CONSER, or SACO funnels with the information that was presented at OpCo, so that their work in the Atla funnels will adhere to the current practices in the PCC programs. The session also presents news of changes coming in programs and tools that funnel participants use.

This listen-and-learn session was designed to show the experience of two different libraries in conducting an inventory. The inventory in the first library was done for the first time in thirty years, because the physical collections of the library were finally in one place, permitting an inventory to be done fairly easily. The inventory in the second library was done for the fourth time in a biennial process. The process in these two libraries was presented so that attendees could determine what part of the methods presented might be applicable to their own situation.

It seems at times that catalogers and directors are at opposite parts of the spectrum: catalogers holding on to cataloging because “that’s the way it’s always been done”; directors trying to make use of dwindling funds, and deciding that cataloging as we know it is not a major part of the future. So it seems—but is the appearance accurate? Are catalogers and directors simply saying the same thing in different ways and with different focuses, or is there a fundamental disconnect between the two viewpoints? The purpose of this panel was to bring together one cataloger and two directors to discuss precisely that topic.

The purpose is to give these catalogers the knowledge they need to continue to produce work for the national databases at a level expected of all PCC participants.

This year, the discussion focused on intentional succession planning (and whether such planning is wanted and/or needed) and some of the ethical problems encountered in cataloging.
