Paper submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of TRS 744 at the School of Theology and Religious Studies at The Catholic Universtiy of America.

In 2011, while working on his monograph Georges Flo- rovsky and the Russian Religious Renaissance... more In 2011, while working on his monograph Georges Flo- rovsky and the Russian Religious Renaissance (Oxford: 2013), Paul Gavrilyuk discovered a cache of letters from Alexander Schmemann addressed to Georges Florovsky among the lat- ter’s papers in the Firestone Library of Princeton University. Gavrilyuk subsequently found the corresponding letters from Florovsky to Schmemann among the papers of Fr. Schmemann held at St. Vladimir’s Seminary. The result, published in Eng- lish translation in this volume, is the correspondence of two giants of the Paris school of Orthodox theology transplanted to the United States, and thus “a window on the relations between two theological schools: the St. Sergius Institute and St. Vladimir’s Seminary” (17).
