Research paper thumbnail of Palaeolithic Artifact Taphonomy in Terra Rossa Sites at Northwestern Greece Revisited: Two New Case Studies

Some researchers have claimed that Palaeolithic material can be found in situ in these formations, whereas others have excluded any such possibility. During the last fifteen years, excavations have brought to light a large number of lithic artifacts of Middle and Upper Palaeolithic age from the open-air sites of Eleftherochori 7 and Molondra, both located in terra rossa deposits in Thesprotia, NW Greece. The study of stratigraphic/spatial context along with the technology, typology, refitting potential, preservation, and surface alteration of these findings leads to clear conclusions about the taphonomy of the artifacts, indicating that at the case of Eleftherochori 7 and Molondra there is no evidence for any in situ recovery of stone tools. Despite this conclusion, we argue that each Palaeolithic open-air site located in terra rossa deposits should be considered as a unique case and conclusions drawn about the taphonomy of its findings should be based on the evaluation not only of geological but also of archaeological data.

Abstract
During the last decade the large fortified settlements of late-Classical and Hellenistic Thesprotia, namely Gitana, Elea, Doliani and Dymokastro, were included in an extensive enhancement and valorization program, resulting in an abundance of new archaeological evidence on their organization and history, which offers a renewed view on the history of the entire region in the same period.
The new archaeological data in Gitana concern primarily the urban planning and lifespan of the settlement as well as the spatial organization of its cemeteries. In Elea the research focused on the spatial organization of the agora area and of some of the settlement’s central districts, while a lot of information occurred about the occupations of the residents and the general character of the city. In Doliani came to light the complex defensive system of the settlement along with a large number of building remains and other archaeological findings certifying the exceptional longevity and durability of habitation. And finally in Dymokastro remarkable shrine complexes were revealed, as well as numerous other archeological findings which attest to the contacts of commercial character developed between this coastal settlement and the rest of the Hellenistic world.

The paper aims at presenting the course followed for the implementation of the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa, focusing on the museological - museographical planning and the philosophy of the permanent exhibition, as well as on the role of the museum as a multifaceted cultural organisation for the local community and beyond.
Behind the museological programme of the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa lies the idea of designing a regional museum that presents the variety of the archaeological past of Thesprotia, while offering stimulus for further improvement of the accessibility to cultural goods. Through the five exhibition units the visitors have the opportunity to gain a general idea of the most important historical stopovers, from the Middle Paleolithic period until the Byzantine era, as well as to discover characteristic aspects of the public and private life in ancient Thesprotia.
Today, after almost six years of operation, the museum has become a vivid cultural cell within the town, through the organization and hosting of temporary exhibitions, various cultural events, educational programmes et al. throughout the year. In this way a sound relationship is being established between the museum and its public and alternative means of education and entertainment are offered.

Τhe coastal fortified settlement of Dymokastro, identified with the ancient city of Elina, occupies a hilltop to the south of Karavostasi Bay near Perdika, Thesprotia. Since its foundation, slightly after the mid 4th century BC, the settlement expanded gradually, reaching the peak of its prosperity during the Hellenistic period. Due to its favorable coastal location which secured control over maritime routes along the Ionian Sea, habitation at Dymokastro continued well after the Roman conquest of 167 BC, at least until the1st century AD. Through the presentation of the available historical accounts, the first references and early work conducted on the site, as well as the latest data resulted from the enhancement work carried out during the last decade, the paper aims at outlining the character and the main features of the settlement, which can be classified among the most important centers of ancient Thesprotia. Reference will be made on the establishment and the development of the settlement, the fortifications, its urban planning, the public secular and religious buildings, as well as the movable finds.

The excavations revealed a large, thus representative, part of the northern cemetery of ancient Kerkyra with approximately a thousand tombs (burial pithoi, clay constructions for primary cremation, pot burials, funerary urns, monolithic sarcophagi, tile and pit graves etc.), two burial monuments and two roads within the necropolis, dating from the 7th to the 1st century BC. The study of the findings provide important information not only on the organization of the ancient necropolis but also on the evolution of the funerary customs and practices exercised by the inhabitants of the ancient city that flourished on the peninsula of Palaiopolis from the Archaic to the Late Hellenistic period.

The excavation carried out in the plot of Corfu’s Justice Hall, during the years 2000-2002, contributes to the study of Corinthian pottery, since it represents, so far, the most extended excavated part of the ancient cemetery on the island. The material presented in this paper is the result of the preliminary study of 224 catalogued Corinthian vases and sherds, that came out from grave contexts and, to a lesser extent, from the infilling of the ancient cemetery.
The finds date between the Middle Protocorinthian and the Late Corinthian period. The types of the Corinthian vases are recurrent (aryballoi-alabastra, kotylai, pyxides, oinochoai, olpai, kraters, kylikes, lekanidai and exaleiptra). They also appear in the material from other excavations in Corfu, though some shapes widely used in Corinth are absent. Apart from some glazed, undecorated vases, decoration is either linear or consists of animal figures, single or arranged in rows. In most cases incision is widely applied, while red and white colours are often used. Human figures appear on three examples, among which an olpe (no 24266) with horsemen in procession and boar hunting. This is a unique example, with regard to the subject and the quality of the decoration, considering also that only two fragments depicting action scenes are known from Corfu.
Due to the lack of systematic and representative chemical analyses of the Corinthian pottery found in Corfu, the present study cannot, for the time being, give answer to the open question as to whether the vases of the 7th and 6th century BC were locally made or imported directly from Corinth. We should, however, underline the presence of high quality vases in the material, some of which seem to belong to well known workshops.

Being an adaptation of the informative material included in the important homonymous exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (April 2012 - June 2013), it was first presented on the occasion of the 3rd International Conference of Experts on the Return of Cultural Property (Athens - Ancient Olympia, 23-26 October 2013).
The exhibition units aim at showing the various dimensions and implications of the illicit excavations and trafficking of antiquities, making it understood that the protection of cultural heritage is everyone’s duty and that it concerns us all.
During the hosting of the exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa additional archaeological and informative material will be presented, regarding four recent cases of looting and illicit trafficking that took place in the area of Thesprotia. It has also been included a photo gallery and the chronicle of the so-called “Paramythia hoard”, an impressive group of ancient bronze statuettes and reliefs, found at the end of the 18th century in the area of Fotiki and which, after a series of transactions, ended up in collections of foreign museums and in the possession of unknown collectors.

The paper offers an overview and synthesis of the archaeological data concerning the period between the ninth and fifth centuries BC which, until recently, was considered something of a “dark” interval in the history of Thesprotia. A cross-examination of the newest results from the sites of Mavromandilia, Doliani, Neochori, Sternari, Chotkova, Agios Donatos, Aetos, Elea, Dymokastro, with finds from earlier excavations (Pyrgos Ragiou, Grika, Mastilitsa, Karteri, Kyra Panagia) point to a spatially expanded habitation preceding the foundation of the large fortified settlements of the late Classical-early Hellenistic period. At the same time it reveals patterns of exploiting the natural sources, communication routes and external contacts during the period in question.

The paper will give an overall a presentation of the unpublished material from the rescue excavation conducted in the years 2004-2005 at the entrance of the archaeological site of Gitana, in the area where the visitor’s building has been constructed.
A densely-built part of the Hellenistic settlement’s cemetery was excavated, with a great variety regarding burial constructions and funeral practices, as well as architectural vestiges which seem to belong to some sort of workshop establishment. Of special interest is the group of medical tools and implements found in one of the graves, while the same area yielded a group of handmade pottery, the dating of which is also discussed in this paper.

Research excavation and the ongoing restoration works on the archaeological site of Dymokastron d... more Research excavation and the ongoing restoration works on the archaeological site of Dymokastron during the last years have brought to light a considerable amount of hellenistic pottery.
Apart from the plain, undecorated houseware, collected in large quantities, it is interesting the high percentage of pottery (mainly skyphoi) with relief decoration, in comparison to that found in other important contemporary sites of Thesprotia, namely Gitana nd Elea.
Decoration, either covering the whole surface of the vase or limited within specific zones, comprises geometric and floral motifs, themes deriving from the marine world, as well as human figures, often within composite mythological scenes.
Within the scope of the present paper, a first approach to the relief pottery will be attempted, including classification and identification of the different centers of production, from which it will be illustrated the role of this coastal settlement as an important trading post between mainland Greece and Southern Italy/Sicily. The “maritime” orientation of the settlement must have been the main reason for the well documented continuity of activity in the settlement long after the Roman conquest of 167 BC.
