The figurative motifs of Aegean and Cypriot pictorial pottery at the end of the Late Bronze Age derive mainly from the animal kingdom and include marine creatures such as fish, octopuses and seahorses. Fish represent one of the most common themes of Aegean Late Helladic IIIC pottery and Cypriot Pictorial White Painted Wheelmade III ware. Mycenaean pictorial motifs and local practices contributed to the establishment of a fish iconography on Cyprus.
Archaeology of Symbols ICAS 1. Proceedings of the First International Conference on the Archaeology of Symbols, edited by G. Guarducci, N. Laneri and St. Valentini, 205-228. Oxford: Oxbow books., 2024
This third volume in the Material Religion in Antiquity series stems from the First International... more This third volume in the Material Religion in Antiquity series stems from the First International Congress on the Archaeology of Symbols (ICAS I) that took place in Florence in May 2022. The archaeological process of reconstructing and understanding our past has undergone several reassessments in the last century, producing an equal number of new perspectives and approaches. The recent materiality turn emphasises the necessity to ground those achievements in order to build fresh avenues of interpretation and reach new boundaries in the study of the human kind and its ecology. Symbols must not be conceived only as allegory but also, and perhaps mainly, as reason (raison d'être) and meaning (culture). They may be considered key elements leading to interpretation, not only in their physical manifestation but by being infused with the gestures, beliefs and intentions of their creators, created in a specifi c context and with a specifi c chaîne opératoire. In this volume a variety of case studies is offered, representing disparate ancient cultures in the Mediterranean and central Europe and the Near East. The thread that connects them revolves around the prominence of symbols and allegorical aspects in archaeology, whether they are considered as expressions of iconographic evidence, material culture or ritual ceremonies, seen from a multicultural perspective. This (and subsequent ICAS) volumes, therefore, aims to embrace all the different aspects pertaining to symbols in archaeology in a specific 'place', allowing the reader to deepen their knowledge of such a fascinating and multifaceted topic, by looking at it from a multicultural perspective.

These are securely traced in the archaeological record and can be approached also via a wide range of ceramic products of Cypriot origin or inspiration occurring at numerous sites around the Mediterranean. The paper provides a comprehensive overview of the main Cypriot pottery wares, as well as their locally produced imitations, found in Mediterranean contexts of the Middle (MBA) and Late Bronze Age (LBA) and examines them as evidence for understanding aspects of trade networks and cultural interaction.

The aim is to establish a solid understanding of ancient Cypriote ceramic technologies and thus provide a complementary perspective to the archaeological research on Cyprus and the Aegean. The first stage of the study consisted of an in-situ survey of 75 objects of the Nicosia Museum Collection using non-destructive analytical techniques (XRF spectroscopy and stereo- microscopy), in conjunction with digital recording of visual information (digital camera, 3-D image recording system) and archaeological documentation. The analytical results show to a chronological interplay on the use of different black decoration techniques (iron reduction technique, manganese black technique) which ties up with the archaeological views towards an Aegean influence in Cyprus during the Middle and Late Bronze Age. They also shed new light for the period 1200-1000 BC on the role of Cyprus along the sea route from the Aegean to the Syro-Palestenian coast.

The results show progressive changes in the raw materials used for the slip and the dark decoration, in the various categories of the archaeological classification scheme from the Proto White Slip to White Slip II. The adoption of the bichrome White Slip I technique, in particular, marks a transitory period of technologically advanced and quality conscious production which may provide some new archaeological insight.

BC in Cyprus. The figurative motifs of the Pictorial White Painted Wheelmade III pottery derived mainly from the animal kingdom (birds, fishes, seahorses, horses, bulls, goats, deer, boars, dogs, hedgehogs). Motifs from the fauna are common (palm trees, pomegranates, different kinds of flowers and the sacred tree); composite scenes as well as human figures are also part of the repertoire (chariots, hunting scenes mixed creatures).
It is also possible identifying different artistic hands and pottery workshops. Cypriot potters have adopted various elements with different provenance according to their taste and needs. Local styles have been formed by the combination of decorative elements originated from the Aegean world, the Syro-Palestinian coast and Anatolia. This exchange of motifs stifles to innovation and indicates a line of communication between different regions of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East.
The inspiration for the images and pictorial motifs derives from the environment and its relation to human activity. Landscape’s observation and dietary habits also have played an important role. However, each theme is associated with a vast number of myths and traditions, the study of which leads to conclusions concerning the religious syncretism. Texts and iconographic traditions such as Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Aegean are essential tools for the hermeneutic methodology.
From a socio-economic point of view the island was less affected by the general turmoil of this period in the Mediterranean, since the production and trade of bronze, which was conducted under the supervision of the sanctuaries, has not been interrupted. The connection between cult and economic process could possibly prove to be very helpful for the explanation of scenes and symbols. Images and symbols indicate that the Late Cypriot IIIA period is characterized by co-existence and cultural exchange, a slow process which after the Iron Age has led to regional political entities, the Cypriot ‘basileia’.

Until the first half of the 19th century, there is no evidence of any law defining the status of antiquities. In the late Ottoman period, antiquities are associated with concepts related to the consolidation of the empire, international relations, power struggles, and the definition of national and cultural identity. Ottoman laws after 1864 stipulate their free movement within the borders of the empire and the prohibition of their export. The aim of this lecture is to contribute to the study of the role of two personalities of Ottoman Archaeology, Osman Hamdi Bey and Theodoros Makridis in the circulation of antiquities within the Empire, as archaeologists of the Imperial Museum of Constantinople.

For hundreds of years, the possession of antiquities has been a symbol of power, strength, wealth, education and national/religious identity. From the 17th to the 19th century romantic travelers returned to Europe bringing back exotic souvenirs from their travels in the Ottoman Middle East. Many Greek antiquities have “travelled” to Europe for the enrichment of collections such as the Caryatid of Eleusis, whose story is very interesting. In Greece, the first private collections have been created during the 19th century. Many of them have constituted the basis for the establishment of public museums, following the donations of some well-known collectors of the period. Greek private collections are also interesting for the way they were assembled. The formation of these collections reveals affecting stories about people and their course around the Mediterranean and gives us a chance to see antiquities from a different perspective.
