This branding system is explained in the context of a multi-functional paradigm in the development of viable rural economies. A questionnaire survey of certified producers conducted for the first part of the research within this paper revealed mainly a strong awareness of the regional branding system, however, with underused further potential. In the second phase of the research, a qualitative study was conducted in the model region of Vysočina, Czechia, and the results of semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs in culinary tourism about their involvement in the creation of tourist packages and their cooperation with regional brands were analyzed. The conclusion stresses the need for a significantly more effective interconnecting body at the regional level with the capability of creating fertile links between rural tourism and regional products.

The aim of the presented study is to find out how second home tourism influences the social environment of a municipality, and whether and how it contributes to the creation of social capital and the knowledge transfer. It ensues from the use of relational data that links appear in the localities primarily on the neighbourly basis. In some cases, the contacts are also used in the place of permanent residence. As a result, the social networks and the knowledge that appear among the participants also have an impact outside a locality in question. The connection to permanent residents of a municipality is rather weak. One can see here an obvious link primarily to major actors or permanent residents living near second-home owners. When establishing contacts, this points out the importance of geographical proximity rather than the often accentuated role of the relationship “second-home...

To gather data, a questionnaire survey of 302 urban domestic garden keepers was conducted. The survey took place between April 2019 and November 2019 in the capital city of Prague, Czechia, and in 8 locations in other Czech cities and towns as a control sample. The results show that the importance of outdoor relaxation in evaluating one's garden prevails, but the possibility of creating something with one's own hands, to produce own food, or to form a more beautiful place are also highly appreciated. In the perception of Czech gardeners, work and leisure often intertwine. Similarly, gardens act as a multifunctional environment, which can be changed in particular phases of the human life cycle. Since gardens were often declared as vital components for many people, it is probable that there is a future for gardening as a leisure activity, although it may be construed rather as a 'light' version of gardening, adapted to one's busy schedule and other hobbies.

The aim is to understand how the post-socialist transformation through tourism affected local community. Design – Tourism has become the primary economic endeavour which dominates community life and upon which the local area is dependent. The area serves as a prime example of a rapidly and extensively evolving, and largely exogenous tourism enterprise situated in a rural host community. The attempt is to present and explain the ways in which local rural people experience, create, interpret, and act upon transformation of the locality through tourism. Methodology - The paper is methodologically grounded in anthropological fieldwork conducted between 2008 and 2013. It is based on the data from participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Thus, research on the relations within both urban and rural communities that share the transforming space seems crucial for future rural development. This article focuses on second home owners and users as significant agents in the transformation of the Czech countryside. Available statistical data indicates a high number of second homes with an uneven location pattern in the landscape. Primary data, based on our own field surveys, in-depth interviews and observations, show the significant social impact of second home tourism on the local social environment. The models of conflicts, coexistence and cooperation are investigated in selected peripheral areas in Czechia. Our own contribution to the research is in the specific focus on community development in municipalities with a significant tourist and recreational function. The major aim is to demonstrate and discuss linkages between second home owners and users and territorial identity with the use of empirical data. Our crucial findings contradict statements about conflicts in relations between the local population and incomers from cities. Especially long-term cottage users are no longer considered as outside invaders in rural areas, which used to cause social conflicts. The differences between second homes and primary residences seem to be more blurred than in the past. The conclusion outlines the possible future directions of research with focus on social capital, multiple dwelling and semi-migration concepts.

A short characteristic of the history of the research into and of the basic development of structure of the second homes is given. This structure was roughly completed prior to the 1990s. The empirical part deals with field and inquiry research into regional differentiation of this phenomenon in model regions of the whole Czechia and results into a tentative typology of fields of second housing and into more general conclusions on the main trends and perspectives.

It consists of a summary of international multidisciplinary theoretical concepts concerned second home tourism – transformation theory, territorial organization, suburbanization, de-urbanization, leisure and amenity migration concepts, spatial and hierarchical diffusion, tourist area life cycle, irritation theory, shift from tourist society to leisure society, residential tourism and lifestyle migration concepts, demographical change concepts, sense of home theory, behavioral concepts of shaping identity which arise from "new" regional and cultural geographies. The empirical part follows the latter theoretical concepts and is focused on analyses of the process of shaping regional identity and identity of regions in the areas with considerable concentration of settlements and municipalities with prevailing tourist function....

For obvious reasons, such activities are directed at traditional centres of tourism, which respond to the current trend towards hedonism present in society. However, major development activity has also taken place in municipalities in which tourism only began to play its more significant part once social and political transformation had already occurred. An example is the Slovak municipality of Veľká Lomnica, a village in which golf-course construction has initiated large-scale development projects. The aim of the work described in this paper was precisely to address this example in assessing the impact of tourism-related urbanisation on the municipality in question.

The method of sale and the range available to tourist are also of significant interest. Tourists take souvenirs home as memories of their trip. The question is whether souvenirs use the local potential of a destination. This article investigates the relationship between souvenirs and local culture and heritage, in a case study of Prague’s historic centre, and thus reveals the causes for introducing ‘falsely authentic’ and ‘geographically displaced’ souvenirs into a particular tourist destination. Prague as a post-socialist urban destination represents a unique case in tourism studies. The survey comprises an analysis of shops and the products offered on the ‘Royal Way’, the most visited part of Prague. This is supplemented by a structured interview with sellers in selected establishments and a questionnaire survey of tourists in this area. The results show that, although there are a number of locally specific souvenirs, the wide range of ‘banal’, ‘globalized’, ‘geographically displaced’ or ‘falsely authentic’ souvenirs reduces the quality of Prague’s souvenirs in general. The reasons for this can be found in the combination of communist heritage and the transformation processes of 1990s.

Discussion of foreign publications reveals that in the context of Czechia geoparks are misunderstood concept. This argument is supported by a case study from one part of the National Geopark Železné hory. The field research proved that there are significant barriers to meeting the purpose of geoparks. Two conditions are required in geoparks: the possibility of cooperation among local actors and the ability to be competitive through a diverse offer of services and products. The paper discusses factors affecting the actual state of society and their operation in the local development. The aim of the paper is to identify the obstacles to the development of geoparks as a reflection of the problems in local and regional development. In addition, the article deals with possible instruments for the management of geoparks and their utilization for effective coordination of local development.

Historical Geography in Czechia: Themes and Concepts , 2023

Tourism and recreation, as presented and perceived as an integral part of the life of present-day... more Tourism and recreation, as presented and perceived as an integral part of the life of present-day society now, were created in the period of industrialisation and urbanisation. Their manifestations (tourism infrastructure, their participants’ behaviour in time and space, etc.) have considerably influenced urban and ruralenvironments. This related not only to landscape structure changes—regulations of river banks and water reservoirs, terrain for sport grounds (such as golf courses, skiing trails)—, but also to the building of mass recreation facilities and second homes. This was primarily changing the character of rural settlements and
creating new settlements with the specific recreational function. Just the change from the primarily agricultural and later industrial functions to the recreational one, taking place on various size levels (landscape, settlement, building and even a population group or individual), considerably altered the life environment in the broadest sense.

Chapters on the History of the 20th Century freely follows the long-lasting cooperation between experts from the Institute of History CAS, the Department of Geomatics of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague and the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development of the Faculty of Sciences, Charles University. The main joint outputs of their cooperation include the Academic Atlas of the Czech History (2014, 2016) and the atlas monograph Frontiers, massacres and replacement of populations in cartographic representation: case studies (15th–20th centuries) (2015).
The Academic Atlas of the Czech History is the second scientific atlas of the Czech and Czechoslovak history, created half a century after the Atlas of the Czechoslovak History from 1965. The conditions for its creation and publication were provided by a research programme under the Institute of History, Czech Academy of Sciences together with the Academia Publishers. The content of the atlas was based on the latest findings of historical research and covered the period from prehistory until the early 21st century. The individual sections captured the basic themes of historical development in the Czech Lands with links to the European development, but mainly the central European space on maps, cartographic models, illustrations, charts and choropleth maps.
The publication Frontiers, massacres and replacement of populations in cartographic representation captured selected examples of violent relocations of the populations including forced exile and border changes on maps and in texts. The team of authors presented this theme at the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences, which was held in Chinese Jinan in 2015, thus evaluating the results of the existing historical research and experience by means of cartographic elaboration. The work was published with support from the Czech Academy of Sciences.
The publication Czech Historical Atlas. Chapters on the History of the 20th Century is the result of the project National and Cultural identity II No. DG16P02H010 where some authors of the mentioned atlases, but also other experts met again over joint objectives and assignments. The title illustrates the selective nature of the themes, which were given by several important motives: The 20th century was a period filled with actions, which in many cases still mingle with the present. It is perceived as a part of the historical and collective memory, touching on the living persons or recalling experience passed by the eyewitnesses across the generations. The broad spectrum of processes and events of modern history cannot be fully captured in a single atlas to an extent given by potentialities of the project. Therefore, the concept of the atlas was adapted to the authors’ specializations, thus emphasising certain stages of modern history for the historical awareness of the society. Yet it was not possible to process certain important findings using a cartographic method. In many cases, a map of the
selected territory would not be evenly covered by the thematic contents, i. e. the historical phenomena and processes, not only because of the lack of relatively accurate topographical information based on research into the historical resources, but also because of their fragmentation, disparity or concentration on just certain areas. There were also the issues of hierarchisation (the degree of importance, superiority and inferiority), categorization and generalisation of the information for the needs of small-scale maps. Borders of the territories and their transformations within the particular chronological milestones depicted together on a single synthesising map also presented a serious problem.
In terms of cartographic processing, the authors were also limited by the dimensions of a printed atlas and the related scales of the individual maps. Where necessary, the
main maps were supplemented with detail maps or overview maps. The thematic content of the maps was always processed with regard to user friendliness and legibility.
Therefore, the choice of themes for the printed Czech Historical Atlas mostly followed the mentioned criteria. At the same time, however, the authors knew that some themes could not be missed out in the selection of maps on the history of the 20th century. In addition to the completely new maps and texts, important themes from the mentioned works were included, but the texts and the cartography were updated and modified.
The atlas has three basic sections: Space, Time and Society. Deliberately, no chronological aspect was chosen that would suppress the uniqueness, specificity and lasting topicality of themes distinctive to the 20th century. The individual sections are preceded by Jitka Močičková’s analytic views, which focus on historical atlases of the Czech Lands from the mid-19th century until the present day with historical reflections on the birth of the European historical cartographic creation.
The Space is clearly connected with delimitation of the territories and incorporation of the Czech Lands, Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic within the central European and international structures. The Space also means division of the territories into smaller units motivated by the political and economic developments. And the Space is
also the landscape where transformations provoked by various causes took place in the development of the society. Despite the fact that other atlases have already explored the landscape in its relation to the society, the authors have processed at least several map examples.
The Time mostly covers themes of the military and political history such as the POW camps in the First World War, the Second World War events and selected historical
milestones of the second half of the 20th century. In this area, the problems of cartographic depiction were the deepest – extensive descriptions of political, economical and cultural developments in the historical resources at the
expense of topographical data, concentration of events into several repetitive locations, rapid transformations of the historical developments in short periods, etc. These facts greatly limited the themes of the second half of the 20th century into just a few examples of their cartographic depiction.
The Society strongly reflects on the still hot issue of migrations, both as a historical process and a demonstration of violence of the ruling powers and regimes. It pays attention to the ethnic, religious and educational diversities and monitors perception of the Czech State in the world through various forms of representation of the individuals as well as the whole entirety. It comments on the demographic development of the Czech Lands and the migrational and religious issues throughout the 20th century.
Although the atlas is a printed publication, the most advanced methods of digital cartography were applied. The creation of all maps in the geographical information system is based on a spatial database, which contains topographic (underlying) layers and a thematic content based on the authors’ manuscripts. The cartographic elaboration respects the unifying elements of the atlas (joint basis of map symbols key, the scale levels, cartographic projections), but each map is processed individually with accent on clear elaboration of the theme. Importantly, the creation of the maps was always accompanied by a cartographer and an expert on the theme (historian, geographer) and their discussion resulted in the final form of the map. The team was
very functional in this respect. The database will be partly used in the upcoming electronic portal “Czech Historical Atlas” where some chronological and spatial aspects can be visualized by means of modern methods of interactive cartography.
The Czech Historical Atlas. Chapters on the History of the 20th Century is yet another feat of the Czech historical cartography from the first decades of the 21st century. It
presents cartographically depicted historical events, which still appeal to the professionals and amateurs, but also issues that have not been processed so far. It offers a view of the historical developments in the time and space as it is provided by printed (analogue) and synthetic maps with a certain degree of stationariness, but at the same time with the benefit of stability of printed media over the internet.

The Vltava islands are certainly among the public areas considerably shaping the Prague cityscape. In order to make professional decisions on their future, one has to know both their past and present. This is why this book brings historical information on both the existing and disappeared Vltava islands in the form of fitting texts. When it comes to the existing islands, there is a documentation of their current state, to which the views of the public were added. For the sake of a better illustration, a use was made of a rich graphic documentation consisting of some engravings capturing the islands in the mid-19th century, slices of old maps of Prague and photos from 2010–2014. These graphic elements are supplemented with brief notes (in Czech and English).

Mobilities of various objects and subjects are either inherent part or directly and indirectly contribute to these continual transformations. During the 20th century Czech landscapes have witnessed several transformations induced by political, cultural, economic and societal development. Thus the aim of the paper is to explore and discuss how changes in the mobilities of objects and subjects have been connected to and influenced transformations of landscapes, its character and functions, and regional identities in Czechia in the mentioned period. Attention will be given to the movements of tangible objects, major population flows as well as to the travelling landscape-objects, i.e. movable landscape representations that contribute to the formation of particular popular landscape and regional images on several scales (from local, over regional to national). The presentation will be based on the utilization of research outcomes of several projects that were conducted recently at The Research Centre for Cultural and Historical Geography, Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague.

The method of sale and the range available to tourist are also of significant interest. Tourists take souvenirs home as memories of their trip. The question is whether souvenirs use the local potential of a destination. This article investigates the relationship between souvenirs and local culture and heritage, in a case study of Prague's historic centre, and thus reveals the causes for introducing 'falsely authentic' and 'geographically displaced' souvenirs into a particular tourist destination. Prague as a post-socialist urban destination represents a unique case in tourism studies. The survey comprises an analysis of shops and the products offered on the 'Royal Way', the most visited part of Prague. This is supplemented by a structured interview with sellers in selected establishments and a questionnaire survey of tourists in this area. The results show that, although there are a number of locally specific souvenirs, the wide range of 'banal', 'globalized', 'geographically displaced' or 'falsely authentic' souvenirs reduces the quality of Prague's souvenirs in general. The reasons for this can be found in the combination of communist heritage and the transformation processes of 1990s.
