Information collected by questionnaire showed that the GCSE grades of those whose language impairments had resolved by 5;06 were below those of age-matched controls. However, the number of GCSE examinations entered and passed was significantly more than those of the 'persistent S-LI' and 'general delay' groups. Overall, IQ was the strongest predictor of educational attainment. However, even when IQ was controlled, literacy skills accounted for independent variance in achievement, especially among those with a history of language difficulty. The survey also noted that the majority of students across all groups remained in full-time education; however, the adolescents with a background of S-LI were more likely to follow vocational and employment training courses rather than A-levels.

Twenty-nine students and a young male English teacher were involved. It was found that the students overall had a positive perception toward using Internet tools. This study indicated that the integration of information communication technology on the Internet with English facilitated the creation of a virtual environment that transformed learning from a traditional passive experience to one of discovery, exploration, and excitement in a less stressful setting. The study revealed that a computer-mediated communication environment could lower students' psychological barriers to enable them to express their opinions freely and to communicate actively on the Internet and that it could also enhance their critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills through online activities or class homepage construction. An individual case study further revealed that a task-oriented English tutoring strategy in association with email communication could motivate the student's writing competence but the student's language proficiency and grammatical accuracy did not improve. Finally, based on the findings, recommendations for future studies are made.

Early media research questions are criticized for their naive assumptions, inadequate distinctions, and the researcher's zeal to generate answers rapidly. A summary of the implications of the symbol systems approach suggests that (1) every medium, including the microcomputer, will favor the transmission of certain symbol systems over others and is likely to require and cultivate different representational skills; (2) every medium is biased toward specific kinds of activities applied to its symbol systems, and is likely to cultivate a different set of mental operations; and (3) subjects will bring different expectations to different media. Twenty-four references are listed. (LMM)

There is still much to be learned about the pedagogical constructs related to IPE. Part 1 of this series discusses the learning context for IPE and considers questions related to the ''who, what, where, when and how'' related to IPE. Through a systematic literature review that was conducted for Health Canada in its move to advance Interprofessional Education for Patient Centred Practice (IECPCP), this paper provides background information that can be helpful for those involved in an interprofessional initiative. A historical review of IPE sets the international context for this area and reflects the work that has been done and is currently being initiated and implemented to advance IPE for health professional students. Much can be learned from the literature related to the pedagogical approaches that have been tried and the issues that need to be addressed related to the learner, the educator and the learning context which this paper examines.

Its goal is to provide educational content to museum visitors in order to augment their museum experience. This paper discusses all aspects of the related research and development. The functional obstacle avoidance system, which departs from the conventional occupancy grid-based approaches, is described. Sage's topological navigation system, using only color vision and odometric information, is also described. Long-term statistics provide a quantitative measure of performance over a nine month trial period. The process by which Sage's educational content and personality were created and evaluated in collaboration with the museum's Divisions of Education and Exhibits is explained. Finally, the ability of Sage to conduct automatic long-term parameter adjustment is presented.

Typically, arts-based research is presented only in theoretical and expository terms in the educational literature. In this book, however, the authors promote the development of arts-based narrative inquiries by using many artistic forms (stories, poems, narratives, visuals) to shape their topics of interest and those of their teacher colleagues. Teacher-researchers are invited, more generally, to reimagine not only their own research inquiries as forms of art but also the field of teacher education and development. Demonstration is the heart of this book.
