In Interwoven I study those with a Spanish provenance; also I have worked with other researchers, Francisco García García and Jitske Jasperse, on different aspects of these vestments. Because of this collaboration, the next two blog entries are written by them and explore some aspects of ecclesiastical vestments such as the connections between the textiles and Gregorian reform in the late 11th and early 12th centuries and the links between textiles from a Spanish Royal Treasury and the V&A collections.

These methods are still valid, but the study of actual surviving textiles, even when made up into dress or ecclesiastical vestments, can give us further information about the raw materials used (fibres, dyes and metal threads), the textile techniques or weave structures and the loom used to produce the fabric, its date and sometimes its place of production. This last is most difficult to ascertain

La admiración y

maestros, junto con don José Ortega y Gasset. Los tres le iniciarán y formarán en las asignaturas y temas más apreciados por él, y serán una referencia vital en su carrera, como veremos a lo largo de estas páginas.

International and U.S. scholars will gather to examine the near-intact monastic treasury of San Isidoro de León in northern Spain as a springing point for larger questions about sumptuary collections and their patrons across Europe and the Mediterranean in the central Middle Ages. Topics of inquiry include Islamic law and sumptuary production, Christian manuscripts and metalwork, patronage and royal studies, identity and gender studies, and cultural and political history. The diversity of questions and perspectives addressed by the speakers will shed light on the nature of León as a paradigmatic treasury collection, as well as on the broad efficacy of multidisciplinary study for the Middle Ages.
There is no charge to attend but spaces are limited. Please register at https://ica.princeton.edu/the-medieval-iberian-treasury-in-the-context-of-muslim-christian-interchange/

Textiles & Identity in the Medieval and Εarly Modern Mediterranean: paradigms of contexts and cro... more Textiles & Identity in the Medieval and Εarly Modern Mediterranean: paradigms of contexts and cross-cultural exchanges
Textiles offer a rich opportunity to explore the projection of identity, both within and between social and cultural groups. A pertinent arena for such an exploration is the intercultural region of the Mediterranean. This workshop will bring together a group of junior and senior scholars to investigate and elucidate the role of textiles in the cultures of the Medieval and early Modern Mediterranean, and its periphery, with a focus on specific case studies. Our investigation will analyze textiles as tools for projecting identity within specific contexts, whether cross-cultural or not. Institutionalized practices of textile use and reuse, written and unwritten rules governing ceremonial use, the departure from standard practices, the active reception of imports and their interpretation will form the major topics examined by the participating scholars. Our directed investigation will seek to identity parallels and points of contact between the use of textiles in various political entities, and among social groups and cultures.

Our aim is to highlight some problems posed by the study of medieval textile production in the Mediterranean through a historiographical and methodological criticism, presenting the issue of Sicilian textile production and its possible consideration as Iberian as a case study. First, we will refer to the beginnings of research on and connoisseurship in textiles to stress their impact on later studies. Secondly, we will outline how new methods of analysis and characterisation can help us to challenge inherited assumptions on these artworks. Finally, we will address the study of selected pieces to show how a renewed analysis of their materiality, together with more traditional approaches focusing on decoration, raises more questions than certainties about their origin and open a way for their ascription to Iberia.

These new data have allowed us to redate the fabrics, placing them within their tenth- through early thirteenth-century Mediterranean and European contexts. The result is a more complex image than was previously assumed, and it offers a significant starting point for further research into the roles played by textiles in medieval Iberia.
