Nikos Ntoumanis | Curtin University, Perth (original) (raw)

My research draws from theories and models in social, health and educational psychology. I am interested in personal and contextual factors that optimise motivation and health behaviour change. Areas of interest are physical activity promotion in different community and clinical settings, self-regulation of weight management goals (diet and physical activity goals), and psychology of sport with emphasis on applications of contemporary theories of motivation. Some of my publications appear on ResearchGate. An overview of my research can be found on my ORCID page. A short overview video of my research is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms0UMz419Ow

I have developed new research instruments in the form of questionnaires that have been widely adopted and translated (peer motivational climate, psychological need thwarting, controlling coach behaviours). I have also empirically integrated theoretical frameworks in various settings (self-determination theory and self-regulation, self-determination theory and achievement goal theory) and developed innovative interventions (targeting communication styles and behaviour change techniques) for the promotion of physical activity engagement, adherence, and psychological well-being.

Many of the journals I have published are highly esteemed journals in various fields of psychology (e.g., Perspectives on Psychological Science, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Current Directions in Psychological Science, Journal of Educational Psychology, Health Psychology, Developmental Psychology), and behavioural medicine (Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Annals of Behavioral Medicine). 77.8% of my publications are in top 25% of journal rankings; 38.1% in the top 10%.(SciVal). My research has attracted over 29,000 citations as of July 2020 (Google Scholar h-index =83; average citations/paper = 68.89), from 11 subject disciplines (showing its broad academic impact). In a seminal review by John Ioannidis of top scientists (https://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.3000384) , my "composite score" was above the 99% percentile cut-off for "Social Psychology", "Clinical Medicine" and "Sports Science". I ranked 440th top scientist in Australia; 35th in Western Australia (across 176 fields of research).

I have also authored/edited two books on statistics that were published by Routledge in 2001 and by Wiley in 2016.

My work has been supported by funding (over $13m) from major research councils in the UK (ESRC, MRC), the Australian Research Council, the European Union, the International Olympic Committee, Healthway, Heart Foundation, UK charities, UK local health authorities, Australian Army Research Fund, and the industry.

In 2014, I was awarded a fellowship by the UK’s Academy of Social Sciences for exceptional research. The Fellowship recognised that all 34 Fellows for 2014 made “a substantial contribution to wider social science in the UK” and were “leading social scientists”. In 2015 I was awarded a fellowship from the British Psychological Society (BPS). According to BPS, “A Fellowship is recognition of a significant contribution to the advancement or communication of psychological knowledge or practice, and represents the highest designation that the Society can bestow”. In 2016 Curtin Universtity awarded me its John De Later Award for Research Leadership, which recognises excellence in research, as well as the title of "John Curtin Distinguished Professor". In 2019 I was awarded the title of Distinghuised International Scholar from the American Association of Applied Sport Psychology. My research has received awards from various academic and professional organisations (e.g., BPS, ISSI, NASPSPA, AASP, ECSS).

I am the Editor-in-Chief of Psychology of Sport and Exercise, the official publication of the European Federation of Sport Psychology, and I serve on the editorial board of several other journals (e.g. Journal of Educational Psychology, Annals of Behavioral Medicine). Further, I have been invited to review papers for nearly 80 different academic journals from the fields of sport, health, educational and social psychology. I am also a member of the Panel for Psychology, Pedagogy, Didactics and Social Work, of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), a Belgian research council, based in Brussels. Other markers of academic distinction include requests from publishers to review proposals for new books or new editions of existing books, and from a large number of national and international grant awarding bodies to review grant applications for Category I funders in Australia, UK, US, Canada and various European countries. In addition, I have given keynote lectures at several international conferences (e.g., European Federation of Sport Psychology) and invited talks at over 25 universities. I often engage with the media (The Times, The Independent, Men’s Health, etc.) in an effort to disseminate my research.
