Mixed research methods were used to collect, analyse and interpret data from respondents and key informants. Participants of the study consisted of 103 employees of Oshana Regional Council. Questionnaires and face to face interviews were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data respectively. The Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 was used to compute the quantitative data while descriptive and inferential statistics were applied to better understand its meaning. To examine the association between employee performance and organisational culture at Oshana RC, methodological triangulation was utilized to strengthen the credibility and validity of the findings. The study found that a Hierarchical Culture is the dominant culture at Oshana Regional Council. It was the finding of this study that the Hierarchical Culture is relatively weak and ineffective in driving employee performance. It was also established that employee performance is positively influenced by organisational culture. The study concluded that a strong organisational culture can provide a number of benefits including organisational unity of purpose, behaviour control and it improves employee commitment. The study recommended that ORC managers should use leadership styles that are most suited to their situation in order to achieve high productivity and should periodically conduct cultural audits.

The other objectives of the study were to establish the factors that led to understaffing and the effects of staff shortage on employee workload at the Forensic Pathology Department. The study used both quantitative to qualitative research approaches in which questionnaires and interviews were the main data collection instruments. After application of the Krejcie and Morgan Sample Size calculator, 103 questionnaires were administered in the Police Department in Oshakati. Probability sampling and non-probability sampling methods were used to select the participants from the sample frame. The data was analysed using SPSS which helped in data presentation. The content analysis method was used to gain better understanding of qualitative data from interviews. The results concluded that excessive workload, lack of incentives at the mortuary section, poor working conditions and lack of understanding on the essence of working at the mortuary as well as lack of opportunities for growth and advancement were amongst the key reasons why staff shunned the Forensic Pathology Division leading to understaffing. The study further concluded that understaffing had an effect on employee performance in terms of the hectic working environment which increased staff dissatisfaction and decreased staff morale leading to poor performance. It was also concluded that understaffing leads to work overloads that lead to further abandonment of other tasks resulting in poor performance. The study recommended that the Forensic Pathology Division should find ways of improving remuneration and compensation schemes for employees in an endeavour to minimise labour turnover. The Division was also advised to recognise good work and institute various motivation and retention strategies which make staff happy while attracting new members to join the Forensic Pathology Division.

The study comprised a sample of fifty respondents who used self-completing questionnaires. The results revealed that Chitungwiza Municipality employees were undertaking various survival strategies during working hours, after work and during weekends such as piece jobs, informal trading, urban agriculture and tilling land in rural areas for those who have it. It was also noted that some employees who are breadwinners had involved other family members such as spouses and children who are ordinarily their dependents to help raise income for the family as informal traders of vegetables, secondhand clothes and other income generation initiatives. Illegal survival strategies such as pilferage and use of Chitungwiza Municipality resources including vehicles and tools for personal gain were also singled out. However, these survival and intervention entrepreneurial strategies are not enough to substitute the buying power of salaries. The study revealed that employees continued reporting for work with the hope that one day things will improve and they would earn their salaries including back pay which was running into thousands of United States dollars per individual by the time of this study. The other reasons for reporting for nonremunerating work were; to avoid disciplinary action by the employer, to avoid losing benefits such as accrued pension benefits and that the employees had no choice since other companies had closed down due to Zimbabwe's economic challenges and for that reason, finding alternative employment was not an option. It was also concluded that some of the employees reported for work to reduce stress because at work they meet friends and they socialise. The study recommended a holistic approach in addressing the issue of non-payment of salaries. Non-monetary assistance to alleviate the suffering of employees was also recommended.

They are mobilized by the financial sector, which allocates them for productive use in the economy. This paper sought to examine the impact of saving practices on the performance of the economy in Zimbabwe from 1980 to 2015. A mixed research approach was used to establish the effect of saving practices on the performance of the economy. Both primary and secondary data were employed for analysis and testing of hypotheses. Hypothesis testing, correlation analysis and regression analysis were used to examine the impact of saving practices on the performance of the economy using some macroeconomic variables. Two hundred depositors randomly selected from various banking institutions from the ten provinces and 114 key informants were used in the investigation. Secondary data on gross domestic product (GDP), total deposits, total liabilities, gross capital formation and net exports were used in the examination of saving practices. The study found that savings were always below the average and the Zimbabwean majority across genders had a formal bank or mobile account. Predominantly, savings are used for transactional purposes, thus creating a wasteful economy. Apart from product/service broadening and deepening, there is a need for robust legal and policy frameworks that will promote a savings culture. Contribution/Originality: This study was carried out to examine the relationship between saving practices and Zimbabwe's economic performance due to the scarcity of extant studies in this area on Zimbabwe. Also, the relationship between savings practices and economic performance in Zimbabwe is not well known.

The collapse of companies in Zimbabwe and globally is alarming, yet the companies are directed and controlled by nonexecutive directors who monitor and oversee the performance of management. The research was qualitative and rooted in the interpretive paradigm. Semi-structured interviews and social media were used to gather data. Purposive and snowball sampling were used to select respondents. Data was analysed using NVivo 10. Findings of the research were that diversity of the board comes in the form of skills, education, experience, gender mix and backgrounds. Two three year terms would bring enough diversity beyond which a board member would not contribute meaningfully. Interlocking directorships breed diversity up to a maximum of three boards. Board size was observed to bring knowledge, skills, resources, velocity of processing board issues and a fair representation of sectors of the economy. Recommendations of the study are that: boards should have a gender balance so that companies tap from capabilities of © Sifile, Susela, Chavunduka & Bhebhe Licensed under Creative Common Page 482 both genders. Appointments to boards should be based on skills and experience. Board members should not sit on more than two committees. Boards should have a reasonable balance of male and female non-executives.

Leadership styles used in the running of these parastatals could be a factor causing this poor performance. The purpose of the research was to investigate the relationship between leadership style and employee performance in the transport sector. Data was collected through administering a Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) for the leadership style and analysis of the employee performance appraisal records of the 178 respondents (34 managers and 144 raters/subordinates) in the selected parastatals. The data was analysed using the statistical package SPSS version 20. It was discovered that there were two main styles employed in this sector i.e. transformation and transactional leadership styles. Both styles were positively correlated to employee performance with transactional leadership style having a much stronger correlation. This implies that leadership styles are an important ingredient in the performance of parastatals.

The research sought to unearth and explicate characteristics or attributes that qualify a NED for selection to the board in order to curtail corporate failures and scandals. The research was exploratory, qualitative and rooted in the interpretive paradigm in order to dig deep into insights on how director characteristics are a factor in the governance of firms. Document review, semi-structured interviews and social media were used to gather data. Forty-two (42) face to face interviews were held. Purposive and snowball sampling were used on respondents. From the results, emerging attributes of NEDs are boardroom entrepreneurship and strength of character. The research recommends that NEDs should be selected based on their board utility value and their abilities to conduct board work. Apart from skills, experiences and proficiencies; NEDs should be endowed with boardroom entrepreneurship and strength of character that can enable them to make informed contributions as committee members.
