In Marvin Krims critical essay he studies the character of Hotspur using psychological techniques which reveal why this character is such a woman hater. During Shakespeare's time, in fact up until the 19 th century, women were regarded as mere objects that had no equality whatsoever to the opposite sex. Therefore it comes as no shock that during the 15 th century there would be men who looked down upon women and regarded their whole being as unnecessary. In his essay, Krims sets out to prove that it is not only the culture that caused Hotspur's antifeminism but also his inadequacies as a man and as a leader.

This is shown through the characters of the sisters and the important presence of the matriarch. While there are significant similarities between the five Bennet sisters in Pride and Prejudice, and the four March sisters in Little Women, there are many differences besides the time period. The pressures of being a woman, familial ties, class structure and the descriptions of each set of sisters, distinguishes them into two different genres of literature. " Pride and Prejudice is the English novel's paradigmatic courtship romance…"(Aurebach 8), and it is categorized as a comedy of manners. " Little Women is one of America's most beloved celebrations of childhood… " (Aurebach 8), but is dramatic in style, and has a serious tone.

Dubliners, one of Joyce's more known books, consist of fifteen stories in which Joyce reinvents the art of fiction with his concept of realism. Eveline, is one of the fifteen stories in which Joyce utilizes a sense of cold, harsh reality to convey a humanistic meaning and theme. In order to fully understand any form of art, critical approaches are necessary to analyze the characters, setting, and the plot, and how all these elements relate to the theme. Eveline, can be approached using many of the critical approaches. However, the psychological approach really gets underneath the surface and helps to give a better understanding of the character and why she succumbs to a depressing fate in the end of the story. According to A Handbook of Critical Approaches to Literature, the human mind is structured so that its great weight and density lie beneath the surface. Deep down these characters are aware of what they are doing, but they are unconscious thoughts which they possess. Dubliners concern cases of spiritual and economic poverty in which a window of opportunity opens offering hope, but then is somehow firmly closed issuing a general feeling of failure and depression. Eveline, like most of the Dubliner stories deals with early 19 th century, lower class Dublin life. The main character is Eveline herself and Joyce explores this character by displaying her life, hopes, and dreams and her attempts
