The initial time delay gap (ITDG) was evaluated in terms of its just noticeable difference (JND) through two instruments, the cello and the trumpet. Even though the IDTG values were prolonged over the measurements and were not significantly varied, an ITDG range of 22 - 220 ms in increments of 91 steps was produced electro-acoustically in an anechoic chamber with a loudspeaker. The result of JNDc ((delta gap/gap) was rated 0.059 and 0.081 at 50% “different” judgement ranges for the cello and trumpet tracks, respectively. The effective duration of the autocorrection function (ACF) of the continuous brainwaves (CBWs) within the alpha (8-13 Hz) frequency range on the left hemisphere responding to 91-step ITDG increments revealed that the continuous ratio minimum Tauee e of CBW was approximately equal to 0.28 s on the trumpet. The continuous ratios of Tauee e_min ((Tauee e_min_rear ...

However, the selection of music is exclusively limited to using Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Symphony No.41, Movement Ⅳ as a music source. In order to prove that the sensitivities to spatial impression of sound localization depend on the structural characteristics of music, other three sound sources including Motif A (Royal Pavane by Gibbon, τ(subscript e)=127 ms), Motif B (Sinfonietta, Opus 48; Ⅳ movement; Allegro con brio by Arnold, τ(subscript e)=35ms) and Motif S (Speech, female, τ(subscript e)=23 ms) were adopted. According to the sound field design theory described by Ando, the determining factor of an ideal reverberation time length lies in the effective delay of autocorrelation function (τ(subscript e)) of sound sourc...

In general hospital buildings, hospitals need to maintain enormous mechanical facilities, which are the main source of noise in hospitals. Noise hazards of 16 general hospitals (single buildings) located in Taiwan were investigated in this study. As the initial stage of the investigation, the heavily trafficked hospital lobbies, including the space of the registration and dispensary counters, were chosen as the investigation objects. A 15-minute equivalent continuous noise level (Leq A) was used to display the possible noise events in the building environment plan of the hospitals. The results indicate that there is a high correlation coefficient (r = 0.76, p < 0.05) between the noise concentration rate of noise events and the scale values of being agitated by noise in lobbies as shown in the results of the noise psychology questionnaires. It worthily notes that autoc...

Questionnaire surveys were initially conducted to assess noisiness scales. Noise measurements were then conducted during daytime hours in each of the lobbies, and a 15-minute equivalent continuous sound level LAeq obtained. The main sources of lobby noise were conversations, machinery, and medical appliances. Noisiness as deduced from the questionnaire responses was found to be correlated with the minimum LAeq or L90 values, and not the logarithmic average LAeq. Zwicker’s loudness and annoyance showed a better correlation with the noisiness scale for a short term of analysis on electronic roll call. Noisiness also correlated with the temporal variation in noise level (the difference between maximum and minimum LAeq values). The reverberation time was also measured in the hospital lobbies; those with shorter reverberation times showed lo...

In addition, it has been further found (Chen, 2004) that the evaluation of a sound field is the opposite between the speech transmission index (STI, proposed by Steeneken and Houtgast, 1973) and magnitude of the interaural cross-correlation coefficient (IACC) where the slope of the ceiling was changed in a hall in a constricted range of STI (0.5~0.7). Takaoka et al. (2007) once used noises and utterances in Japanese to examine the influence of a sound field's reverberation time and the IACC on speech articulation. They found that under an IACC condition where the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) was between 0 dB ~10 dB and reverberation time varied between 0.5s~4.0s, no obvious changes were noticed in speech articulation, an...

In a psychoacoustic experiment, respondents provided perceived noisiness ratings affected by 12 noise events in hospital lobbies according to the processes recommended by ISO 15666. According to the correlations between subjective and objective survey results, the average LAeq ,15 m induced during the daytime itself was confirmed to be poorly related to subjective noisiness. The three independent variables shown to have the largest effects on perceived noisiness were (1) L min − L max, (2) the effective duration of the normalized autocorrelation function ( τe, h) of all LAeq,15 m from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and (3) the gradient of the cumulative distribution function (0.3–0.7 cumulative rate range). These statistical attributes have been confirmed as useful tools for detecting perceptio...

Music can convey the concepts and values of the religion and encompass the emotions of the followers. Therefore, the acoustics of the worship must also convey these functions. In this study, the theory of subjective preference for concert hall established by Ando [1] was used to investigate four physical factors in churches. Since church are always thought which is reverberant and a fitting space for music. The factors proposed by Ando [1] are

Comparisons were performed based on autocorrelation function (ACF) of continuous brainwave (CBW) and slow vertex response (SVR). The results are: (1) the effective delay time of ACF (τ e) of β-waves (13-30 Hz) in the left hemisphere under changes in Δt 1 was significantly and positively correlated with speech intelligibility (p < 0.001). (2) As ASW increased, the relative amplitude of left hemisphere A (P2-N2) tended to decrease (p < 0.05) in SVRs, while N2 latency tended to increase (p < 0.05); the lateral lemniscus in the auditory nerve was suggested to be the reactive site. (3) With regard to hemispheric specialization in brain, speech intelligibility, the main temporal factor, was found to be controlled by the left hemisphere. A subjective spatial factor, ASW, the relative amplitude of SVR was also found to decrease in the left hemisphere; nevertheless, they are coherent while the N2 latency of SVR significantly prolonged in both left and right hemisphere under changes in IACC E3 .
