For EFL learners, the correct use of RVs is often challenging. While most EFL studies focus on the functions of citation as used by novice researchers in research articles, Ph.D. theses, or university writing, fewer works are concerned with Master's theses, often students' first encounter with original scientific and academic writing. This study explores the use of RVs in EFL learners' Master's theses. Besides investigating the types and functions of RVs, the choices of the verb tense, voice, and the subject-agent in the reporting structures are explored. The research was performed on 82 Master's thesis Literature Reviews written in English by Czech economics and management students. To determine the types and functions of RVs, the study adopts Hyland's (1999, 2002) framework. First, the frequenci...

The hospitality industry plays a significant role in regional development as its services are a p... more The hospitality industry plays a significant role in regional development as its services are a prerequisite for tourism growth, which on the premises of sustainability has become a major contributor to socioeconomic growth. Unfortunately, the hospitality industry has been continuously struggling with high employee turnover and a significant "within" and "out of" labour mobility, regardless of the phase of the business cycle, time, or geographical region. This could be reasoned by employees historically viewing offered jobs in the hospitality industry as low-paid, with little or no promotion possibilities, giving the employees little or no room for self-development and realization of their full potential as human beings, and thus "labelled" as low social status jobs; yet seasonal, stressful, time demanding, and monotonous. Therefore, drawing upon Carroll's (2015, 2016) four-dimensional concept of corporate social responsibility, this study, using a set of multiple regression analyses, empirically examines the effect of each dimension (economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic) on hospitality industry employees' attitudes and behaviour such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment, which eventually lead to lowering employees' turnover intentions. The sample under analysis (n = 411) was collected from employees of 24 small-or medium-size lodging enterprises located in Prague, as the small-to medium-size businesses are the "backbone" of local economies. Results indicate a significant influence of corporate social responsibility on the above-mentioned employees' attitudes or behaviour. However, not all four dimensions play the same role in stimulating the desired employees' behaviour outcome. This study also contributes to the literature on corporate social responsibility as scholarly literature gives it little room in relation to employees, especially in the Central European context.

The present study is concerned with -ing participle base adverbs as one realization form of this ... more The present study is concerned with -ing participle base adverbs as one realization form of this word class and their Czech equivalents. The focus of our study is on -ingly adverbials especially in their sentence modifying function. Sentence modification is present in both languages, English and Czech; however, based on morphological and syntactic differences between the two languages, the means of Czech and English sentence modification do not always correspond. Above all, this is caused by the fact that -ingly adverbials, a productive class of disjuncts evaluating the content of the clause from the speaker's point of view, structurally more or less do not have Czech corresponding counterparts. In English -ing participle base adverbials can be regarded as condensed forms of clausal realization (surprisingly ~ it is surprising). Although in Czech such adverbial forms are structurally possible, they are not in common usage (překvapující ~ *překvapujícně). This often results in applying different means of attitudinal evalution as counterparts of -ingly disjuncts. Therefore a primary interest of this work is a comparison of morphological, syntactic and stylistic differences in the sentence modification between English and Czech. Unlike in Czech where the word order is flexible, in English the position of a..

Being considered the “backbone” of local economies, it is on small- to medium-size enterprises (SMSEs) to come up with an “out-migration” solution which would be effective; yet at the same time sustainable, and adding social value to the local or regional development. Therefore, using a sample of 24 SMSEs from the hospitality industry environment, this paper empirically examines corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a prerequisite for employees’ affirmative work attitudes, such as job satisfaction (JS), effective organizational commitment (OC), and employees’ voluntary retention (R). Inspired by Carroll’s (2015, 2016) four-dimensional concept of CSR (economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic dimension), the findings suggest a significant causal relatio...

Investment in education and training is a decisive factor in competitiveness, sustainable development and employment within the EU, which significantly affects the quality of life. The aim of this article is to assess the position of the Czech Republic (CZ) in an international comparison based on EU indicators in the field of education and to evaluate the involvement of Czech organizations in the process of lifelong learning. The evaluation of data has shown that the CZ is below the EU average in most of the indicators set out in the Europe 2020 strategy; however, in the CZ there is an ongoing change in the structure of education, the level of achieved education is gradually incresing. The results of the primary research indicate that the organizations that systematically plan educati...

For the purposes of the research, the e-learning Business English course was developed. The objective of the research was to find out students ́ opinion on e-learning based on the frequencies of their responses and on their qualitative signs. The research was conducted in accordance with the long-term aim of the CULS Prague, as well as in accordance with the language policy of the European Union, with the national policy of language education and with the long-term aims of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic.

These key competences may be used as a basis for project management university courses. An incidence matrix was set up, containing relations between IPMA competences described in IPMA competence baseline. Further, discrete-time Markov chain was used to calculate the weights from the incidence matrix. The authors later considered the most important competences whose weight sum equalled 50% importance. The article defines IPMA standard competence minimum. Since the minimum comprises the standard from more than its half, it can be regarded as minimum for the creation and development of project management teaching and learning. The structure corresponds to IPMA certified B level (excluding such requirements as experience etc.). In the discussion of this article the defined minimum of the standard competences was compared with recommended preparation for ind...

Through the questionnaire survey, the public's views on retraining courses were obtained. The data obtained was the basis for quantitative research. The method of semi-structured interviews with the participants of a relevant retraining course was chosen to obtain information for qualitative research. The range of questions identified the state of employment before retraining, the perceived quality of the education course and its subsequent impact on the labour market, including the identification of the employment priority in the monitored region. The proposal for the possibility to apply lifelong learning is to change the system of monitoring the effectiveness of retraining courses and the related established records, thereby increasing the success of the placement in the labour market in the given field.

Usually due to some capacity or time constraints or other reasons it is necessary to use more routes (i.e. more vehicles, or one vehicle must go out from its home place more times). This case is called the vehicle routing problem and there exist many types of this task because of the variety of reasons causing the necessity of use more than one route. Practically all the vehicle routing problems belong among the so-called NP-complete or NP-hard problems. This means that there exists no effective method which would succeed in finding a precise theoretical optimum for them. In such tasks, we can employ different approximation methods which provide us with solutions similar to a theoretical optimum and acceptable as an economic optimum. In practice, however, companies seldom pay enough attention to dealing with such problems, especially if transportation is not their principal work load and if it ...

Municipalities with extended competence (MECs) as first-instance forest administration bodies thus perform the so-called “mixed” administration. Besides forestry, MECs cumulatively perform hunting and fishing administration, observing several different laws. On an example of three MECs in South Bohemia (České Budějovice, Týn nad Vltavou and Písek), the paper analyses the decision-making processes and control activities concerning the implementation of administrative activity, particularly the Forest Act. The findings show that during the observed period 2011–2015, the most frequently conducted administrative proceedings under the Forest Act involved binding opinions regarding permission for buildings at a distance of fewer than 50 m from the forest and decisions on timber harvesting. Other frequently performed acts somewhat surprisingly concerned issuing licenses for pro...

The research is a follow-up to a field investigation performed within the National Forest Programme II for 2007-2013 in the Vysočina region in 2010. The present research was carried out in the Pilsen region in 2012 and the Central Bohemia region in 2015, applying the same method of investigation as in 2010-a questionnaire survey. The findings are based on the results of all three surveys and supported by the analysis of legal and forestry-related documents concerning financial subsidies for forest owners' associations. The study has revealed reluctance of small-scale owners to join associations. Their lack of motivation is caused by insufficient funding from the government supporting the administration and management of associations. The reluctance also results from the request for associations to be legal entities, which most applicants do not meet as they are either not registered or are registered under unsuitable legal forms. Between 2011 and 2013, no contributions were paid by the Electronic supplementary material The online version of this article (

The main aim of this paper is to compare the quality of social services in terms of user satisfaction in relation to the provider, and to find out whether these facilities are comparable in providing social services, whether they meet the needs of the target group of seniors and whether the seniors are satisfied with the service. A field survey was performed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The sample of respondents (n = 108) was composed of seniors using residential social services for the elderly provided by both public and private entities. The questioning was conducted through structured interviews, taking into account the specificities of the questioning of the elderly. The qualitative survey was carried out using a semi-standardized interview with statutory representatives of homes for the elderly, family members and representatives of the founders of public organizations. More than three quarters of respondents rated the social service provided to them very positively. In the field of technical security, it was the non-state facility which received the better evaluation. Furthermore, the investigation conducted with statutory representatives of the organizations has provided valuable information on the funding of social services. The current funding method does not allow longer-term planning of organizational development, investment, and personnel policy. Finally, recommendations for practice are mentioned.

Existující adverbiální ekvivalenty obvykle odpovídají příslovečným určením začleněným do větné stavby a nikoliv nezačleněným větným modifikátorům. Čeština tak pro překlad používá systém částic nebo větné realizace. Článek se zabývá vhodností různých typů překladu na základě porovnání anglických a českých protějšků dvou obsahových disjunktů surprisingly a seemingly.

The demand of agriculture companies for qualified workers is relatively high; unfortunately, people still prefer to work in the related or other fields where they have more suitable work conditions related. Building the brand of the employer, improving the awareness of the public and increasing the loyalty of the present employees can raise the offer of vacancies and obtain new qualified employees. The question of the approach to its management has always been controversial because forest ecosystems were essentially modified due to intensive forest management and in particular, the indigenous vegetation with native species composition has been preserved in insignificant residues only. The discussion between supporters of the "non-intervention regime" and supporters of "forestry approaches" is also reflected in reporting of the media, which addresses the public. The authors use media content analysis and framework based on a CIMO logic to find out whether the media and way of reporting can reflect the dynamism of the acting factors, provide feedback to the policy and decision makers and interests groups, and how the media influence the perception of the forestry sector by the public and, in this connection, the communication of foresters with the public and forest policy enforcement.

An increasing number of university students is also reflected in the conditions of the universities in the Czech Republic. However, current financial possibilities of the educational and research capacities of departments do not suffice to a rapid increase in the number of students. A solution can be the introduction of ICT into a teaching process; computers save time for both the teachers and students while enabling intensive use of space and simplifying the administration of tests. The paper aims to express the impact of using ICT on level of knowledge, respectively classification of university students enrolled in course Economics on the example of e-learning system Moodle. A partial aim of the study is the generalization of experience with learning management systems and the expression of their positives and negatives. As shown by our research the introduction of smart education from 2006 to 2015 first led to a drop and subsequently to an improvement in the quality of the students’ performance.

The aim of the paper is to identify the benefits of human resource branding in businesses arising therefrom. A partial aim is to identify the present key managerial challenges of agriculture businesses. In the work, the data collected from a questionnaire survey (n = 108) were used together with the information from the Czech Statistical Office, in the opinion of which the labour market in the agricultural sector does not exhibit a positi...
