This paper examines (1) why some export companies have pursued ISO 9000-series registration while others have not, and (2) whether export companies pursue ISO 9000-series registration differently from companies whose market scope is exclusively domestic.

It has been argued that the Internet is particularly appealing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that wish to internationalize their activities. The objective of this paper is (1) to identify advantages the Internet offers to these SMEs, and (2) to point out some of the drawbacks that SMEs face when carrying out international transactions through the Internet. Eight propositions are developed and ideas for future research discussed.

M&A activity creates turbulence for company management, as well as other stakeholders. The difficulties faced in combining two independent companies is borne out by merger statistics—most M&As fail to deliver the expected results. Researchers are paying increasing attention to management and cultural factors that potentially affect performance. One such factors concerns the important decision facing executives about what to name the new entity, and how to present the entity through visual devices such as logo, typeface and colour. We present findings from the first systematic study of the CVI choices that are made following M&As, as well possible influencing variables. Our examination of 83 M&As reveals that first, the acquiror's CVI is used in eight of ten M&As, and second, neither the relative power of the combining companies, the geographic scope of the M&A, nor the industry sector, appear to influence CVI choice. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

The pharmacies use e-commerce and other technologies to reach large numbers of potential customers and to exploit the sizeable price difference that exists for prescription drugs in the two countries. The resulting cross-border trade in drugs grew rapidly from 2001.2 Despite rapid, short-term success, the survival of Internet pharmacies was not assured. Critics of Internet pharmacies claimed that their practices were illegal, unethical, and unsafe. Further, the traditional pharmaceutical supply chain had reacted strongly to the challenge laid down by Internet pharmacies. The future position of Internet pharmacies was therefore uncertain. The case study examines the Internet pharmacy industry, with one company (Mediplan Health Consulting Inc.) providing illustrations. It shows that e-commerce technology was critical for Internet pharmacies at start-up, but that non-tec...

Great expectations existed for electronic marketplaces in the late 1990s, leading to the establishment of hundreds of new venues for B2B buying and selling. It was feared that the improved efficiency over traditional market mechanisms meant existing business relationships and methods were doomed. Another concern was voiced; namely that smaller nations and peripheral regions would lose trade to electronic marketplaces in central locations. These issues are examined in a study of electronic marketplace innovation in Canada, leading to an assessment of their prospects there, as well as more generally. Case study research was conducted with six Nova Scotia SMEs. Findings from this exploratory study include (1) stage-based theories do not reflect company experience, (2) multi-domestic marketing strategies appear dominant, and (3) location and country-of-origin effects persist, in the online environment. Thus, while the Internet may offer global reach, commerce is still conducted locally. The paper also notes a number of challenges faced by Internet-based companies as they expand their business interests, as well as ideas for future research. Internet & internationalization / 1

It begins by reviewing the relevant literature and then goes on to present preliminary evidence from a continuing study. Forty electronic marketplaces are identified and characterized in terms of scope, type, establishment and location. Twenty-nine are Canadian-owned or operated and 11 have either US or international ownership, but significant Canadian company participation. The findings are discussed and a number of conclusions drawn that seem to hold for Canada and may apply in other countries with small and open economies.

It views the industry sector from a cluster standpoint. The paper presents descriptive data on nine companies and 13 support organizations that have been visited as part of a continuing study. At this point in time, it is not clear whether the collection of organizations in Halifax, Nova Scotia represents a biotechnology “cluster” as defined in the literature.

Introduction In the late 1990s and early 2000, many companies formed or joined electronic marketplaces (e-Ms). Since that time, ISO 9000 standards have gained international recognition and have been widely adopted by manufacturing and service industries. In December 1999, more than 340,000 ISO 9000-series registration certificates had been issued around the world (ISO, 2000). Adoption of ISO 9000 standards has been greatest in Europe and Asia, with North America somewhat slower. Despite this situation, the number of North American adopters is significant. In Canada, for example, registrations totaled at least 9,600 in February 2000 (Globus International Quality Group Inc., 2000). ISO 9000 embodies a series of standards and guidance documents that help companies to establish a management system that focuses on quality improvement. The management system addresses three stages in the qualit...
