By combining a mixed-methods approach this research analyses the impact of pre-service training on fourth-year pre-service Social Studies teachers‘ perceptions of readiness. The findings suggest that the student-centred approach was not fully articulated by the pre-service training institution. Therefore pre-service teachers had a more positive perception of their Practicum II B – In School Immersion as opposed to their coursework in improving their state of readiness to facilitate in the Social Studies classroom. In addition, pre-service teachers believed that more authentic experiences in the curriculum would enhance their state of readiness to facilitate. This research provides the basis for further studies into the quality of pre-service training in Jamaica and its implications for facilitation in the classroom context.

The movement began in Colonial Jamaica in 1914 but became a transnational phenomenon having its greatest success in the United States and a rather variegated existence throughout the rest of the globe. The difference in trajectories of the Garvey movement has created a localized approach to the study of the movement. American historians have been at the forefront of this approach. To that end, this thesis attempts to unite the localized histories of the Garvey movement in order to emphasize the ideological continuities and discontinuities of this movement, a creation of colonial disaffection.
