A while ago, Anthony indicated that he would be interested in knowing the syllabus from my Camp Culture film studies class. Since I have just finished (I think) my final paper for said class, I thought I'd post the list of screenings and some minor commentary on each.
If anyone cares about the reading list, I'll post that too after I get my handouts back in some sort of order.
The Importance of Being Earnest
I <3 Oscar Wilde, and this adaptation is quite good - nice and theatrical. Also ridiculous, British, and very very campy.
All About Eve
A classic Hollywood film. Bette Davis is brilliant. I think it's about 45 minutes too long, but very enjoyable nonetheless.
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Ed Wood films are disasters. Thank God they're not very long. These are required viewing for anyone who even thinks they like things that are so bad they're good.
Bride of Frankenstein
I actually fell asleep during this screening. As 1930s monster movies go, it's a classic. The gay subtext is well done.
The Scarlet Empress
THIS MOVIE IS REALLY REALLY REALLY LONG AND I DON'T LIKE MARLENE DIETRICH THAT MUCH ALTHOUGH I CAN CERTAINLY UNDERSTAND WHY SHE IS A CAMP ICON.
I did not enjoy this film very much.
She Done Him Wrong
At least it's short. Mae West irritates me.
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
Now this is a brilliant film. Bette Davis will give you nightmares. Joan Crawford isn't so bad either. Highly recommended by me.
Female Trouble
See icon. John Waters is one of my heroes, and I adore his early trash films.
A Clockwork Orange
Isn't liking Kubrick a requirement? Come on, you all know you need to see this film if you haven't already.
Pee Wee's Big Adventure
I hadn't watched this since I was about six. Revisiting the gay "subtext" of Pee Wee (it's not really subtle enough to be called subtext, in my opinion) makes me wonder if it had a subliminal effect on my childhood development and if this is why I have unconsciously surrounded myself with gay men.
Ed Wood
Tim Burton is God. Even better if you know Ed Wood's films. Martin Landau is phenominal as Bela Lugosi.
Mars Attacks!
This is probably Burton's worst film, but I adore the aliens.
and tomorrow's screening...Invasion USA
Obviously haven't seen this one yet.
