Damn Hikers (original) (raw)
My mom and I are doing this hike tomorrow: http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Tunnel_Falls_Hike
I've never really done any hikes in that area before, so am just wondering if there's anything in particular that would be helpful to know.... A co-worker let me know that you have to pay $5 to park at the trailhead. That kind of stuff.

Anyone know if the bridge across the sandy is up on the ramona falls trail right now??

I'm sure most of you have experienced Tunnel Falls, but I haven't (nor anything like it yet) and I have to say Eagle Creek was one of the prettiest trails I have ever walked down, but nothing, but nothing, beat staring at the waterfall from half an inch away, well worth every blister and the sunburn.
Next beautiful day, if you haven't been go. I am pretty sure that's a life changing amount of gorgeous!

Question, when this site says this hike is 5.8 miles, do they mean RT from the Terwilliger trail head to Council crest and back?
Hello all!
Hope you've been doing some lovely hiking this summer.
So, despite the heat I'm dying to get out this weekend and find a place to hike that also has the potential for swimming - lake, waterfall area, etc.
Any ideas? I'm down for hikes up to ~8 miles or so roundtrip. Or longer, depending on elevation gains.
Thanks!
Ok Damned Hikers, list your must do summer hikes in the PNW.
Please note them as such: Trail-Nearest City-State-Hiking Level
Feel free to suggest camping favorites as well.
TIA
I understand there's some sort of jaywalking sting going on downtown. Tickets are being issued, don't let it be you.

I've been mostly an indoor person for most of my life, but am now trying to explore nature and get outdoors more often. That said, I'm not very keen on bugs of any kind, especially arachnids, and the prospect of getting eaten by a tick does nothing to encourage me to go out.
I've read a number of websites that give some tips about avoiding ticks, and some of the advice seems sound and easy enough to follow. However, they all recommend using bug repellent, like DEET, which I would rather not do; there are enough chemicals around me as it is. The other advice includes undressing on the patio, immediatelly washing your clothes and drying them on high heat, having a thorough body check, and so on. Perhaps this is because I have been nice and safe inside the house, but do they seriously expect me to do all that every time I step off the sidewalk?
Do you, Portland hikers, worry about ticks? If so, did you learn to avoid them or live with the chore of looking for them every time you go out? How likely are you to get ticks? Is it something to only worry about on prolonged hikes through the woods, or does one need to do the entire "bathe in alcohol and burn your clothes" every time you're not surrounded by concrete and bricks?

Any hikes going on this weekend? I liked that MAX idea that was a few posts down. Just wanted to see what people were up to! :o)
