Design/methodology/approach Each of the four participants contributed ten diaries and took part in three interviews during the first semester of their stay. Findings International students’ information needs and seeking behavior are shaped by their host university but also by cross-cultural, personal and situational issues. While the cross-cultural issues set international students apart from domestic students, the personal and situational issues create individual differences that call for more individually tailored support. The studied international students lacked information about both study-related and everyday issues. These two types of issues were intertwined and experienced as equally stressful. ...

According to Rowlands et al. (2008) many myths exist about the Google Generation (those born after 1993) that tend to overestimate the positive impact of ICTs on the young. The ubiquitous presence of technology has not resulted in improved skills in information retrieval, information seeking and evaluation. However, information skills are needed more than ever if people should be able to navigate competently in the information society. At the national level there is an intensive need for educational research and inquiry into the information and digital literacy skills of young people. This will help guide the way library services and digital information systems are designed in addition to facilitate how information literacy programs are developed and implemented in an educational practice. The research on young people’s information behaviour by Rowlands et al...

After a presentation of the cognitive uncertainty dimension underlying Kuhlthau’s ISP-model, uncertainty factors associated with personality, the work task situation and social settings are introduced. These different dimensions of uncertainty are explored in a longitudinal case study of three groups of LIS students (two groups with tree females and one group with three females and one male) while they were preparing a project assignment. It is explored to what extent group members’ experiences of uncertainty differ from the individual information seeker in Kuhlthau’s ISP-model, and how this experience may be related to personal, work task and social factors. A number of methods have been employed to collect data on each group member during the assignment process: a demographic survey, a personality test, 3 process surveys, 3 diaries and 3 interviews. It was found...
