In case you missed it: The first Fossil of the Day at COP29 in Baku has been awarded to the Group of Seven (G7) nations—United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Why? For 20 years, they’ve been dodging their financial obligations to address the growing climate finance debt. Despite their immense resources and historical responsibility, the G7 continues to fall short in delivering on promises to the global south. 🔗 Read more ➡ https://lnkd.in/g-TgB_9RThe contest for colossal fossil isn’t over yet. 🌏 It’s #EnergyDay at #COP29 here in Baku! What kind of energy commitments do we want from countries in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)? Read Climate Action Network International's Energy in NDCs summary outlining key guidelines for countries to truly be ambitious and deliver just and equitable transition to renewable energy systems 🌱⚡️ Key takeaways: ✅ NDCs should target 100% renewable energy to maintain global temperature rise within 1.5°C, with developed nations transitioning by 2040 and developing nations by 2050. ✅ Countries with greater financial capacity and historical responsibility should lead, providing public financing, technology transfer, and capacity-building to support renewable energy transitions in developing nations. ✅ Policies should support workers and communities impacted by fossil fuel phase-outs and renewable energy adoption, ensuring inclusive benefits such as affordable energy, job creation, and socio-economic development in marginalized areas. ✅ NDCs should avoid false solutions like CCS, large-scale bioenergy, and nuclear. Renewable projects must protect biodiversity, avoiding projects that increase ecosystem harm, especially woody biomass for energy. 🔗 Download it here: https://lnkd.in/ehgwTXr3🔗 More of our work on renewable energy: https://lnkd.in/eChMbhRM - Climate Action Network International hat dies direkt geteilt

Here in Baku, the discussions at #COP29 are arguably the most important climate talks since 2021, but despite record-breaking heatwaves, floods, and wildfires, wealthy countries are on a path to derail the COP29 climate finance negotiations. The World Leaders Summit began yesterday with flowery words to tackle the Climate Crisis that were supposed to inspire progress and action. But let’s take a moment and reflect on the disconnect between these powerful, poetic and completely incoherent proclamations and the reality in the corridors and meeting rooms where we are seeing progress is all too often slow, uninspired, unjust and often plain insipid.#climatefinance #NCQG #payup
