Let's explore the latest developments in the European circular economy for September! 🔄 We'll delve into the exciting updates together!♻️🧐 This month we added a new company to our portfolio! In September, we shared our latest investment in REDUCED, a Copenhagen-based pioneer in upcycled food ingredients. With this strategic boost, REDUCED's #SeriesA funding round now totals €8 million, empowering their expansion across the DACH region and beyond. 🚀 REDUCED is transforming the food industry by turning side streams into premium umami flavors, helping to reduce #CO2emissions by up to 80%. This aligns perfectly with ECBF's mission to drive the circular bioeconomy forward. We look forward to supporting REDUCED's journey of innovation and sustainable growth. 💪ÄIO, a biotech startup from Tallinn, has raised €6.1 million to scale its sustainable oil and fat production. Using yeast fermentation, the company transforms wood and agricultural residues into eco-friendly alternatives to palm oil and coconut oil. ÄIO has developed a unique method that enables the food industry to reduce its reliance on environmentally harmful animal fats, palm oil and other vegetable oils. ÄIO’s solution uses specialised yeast to transform by-products from wood and agricultural processes, such as sugars extracted from sawdust, into food-grade fats and oils. 🌴🥥Mishkay Biotech, a Lithuanian startup specializing in medicinal and edible mushrooms, has secured a substantial increase in funding from Tesonet, which has tripled its initial investment. This funding will help MISHKAY complete its R&D laboratory and expand production capabilities for its mushroom-based products. The company aims to tackle the issue of low-quality and counterfeit mushroom supplements by developing scientifically-backed, high-quality products.🍄#venturecapital #sustainability #circularbioeconomy -

The textile industry is at a critical turning point. With over 60 million tons of textile waste, 4-7% of global water usage, and 5% of CO2 emissions tied to fashion production, the need for sustainable solutions has never been clearer. 💧🌱#Startups and #innovators are answering the call with breakthroughs like bio-based dyes, plant-derived fabrics, and circular design models. These technologies offer a way to minimize environmental impact, yet scaling them remains a huge challenge. 🔬👗 From raw materials to waste management, every part of the textile supply chain contributes to pollution. Conventional practices like synthetic dyeing and plastic-based fabrics are major culprits, but innovative alternatives are beginning to change the game. Bio-fabrication and zero-plastic textiles are on the rise, bringing us closer to a circular economy. But innovation alone won’t fix everything. To bring about meaningful change, consumer demand, government regulations, and investment in R&D are all critical. 📊👥 Fortunately, we’re already seeing shifts in consumer behavior, with more and more people opting for slow fashion and sustainable products. It's clear that the path to truly sustainable textiles requires a full ecosystem shift. Brands must embrace these innovations and overcome scaling issues to make them accessible at a global level. This requires collaboration across the entire industry, from designers to manufacturers to policy makers. Together, we can create a more sustainable, ethical, and circular textile future! 🌍 You can find the whole blog entry in the comments below. 👇#venturecapital #sustainability #circularbioeconomy -

The #bioeconomy holds the potential to shape our future sustainably and transform industries. At ECBF, we see specialised funds investing in the sustainable and bio-based economy as a key driver to address global challenges like climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation. 🌍🌿 But how strong is the interest in such targeted investments? If we want to accelerate the transition to a greener economy, understanding market interest is crucial. Investing in sustainable funds goes beyond financial returns – it contributes to a resilient, circular economy. 💰📈 These funds support innovations that replace fossil resources with bio-based alternatives, help reduce carbon footprints, and enable the development of circular business models. 🔬 Innovation in sectors like packaging, agriculture, and energy drives transformation. 🌱 Sustainability ensures long-term environmental and social benefits. 📊 Financial opportunities lie in identifying projects with high market potential and scalability. Your opinion matters! Whether you're an investor, thought leader, or someone passionate about the green economy – we want to hear from you. 💼🌍#venturecapital #sustainability #circularbioeconomy

The European greenhouse horticulture market is expanding rapidly due to the rising demand for fresh, locally produced food and heightened concerns about food security amidst a growing population. While greenhouses offer a controlled environment for crop cultivation, they also come with significant sustainability challenges. Traditional lighting systems, like high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, are still widely used, consuming excessive energy — up to 80% of which is wasted as heat rather than light. This inefficiency not only drives up operational costs but also contributes to resource depletion, CO2 emissions, and negatively affects plant growth. 🌱💡 Enter RED Horticulture, our portfolio company leading the charge in sustainable innovation. 🌿🔋 RED develops advanced LED lighting technologies that drastically improve energy efficiency and optimize plant growth. With their dynamic spectrum technology, tailored photobiology recipes, and smart control system, MyRED, growers can now adjust lighting in real-time, based on both climate conditions and plant needs. These innovations lead to more than 53% energy savings compared to HPS systems, and over 18% savings compared to static LED systems — all without compromising yield quality. The results? Reduced energy consumption, minimized CO2 emissions, and a lower environmental footprint, making greenhouse farming more cost-effective and sustainable. Key Achievements with RED: ✅ 53% energy savings versus HPS lamps ✅ 18% savings compared to fixed LED systems ✅ Enhanced crop yields and food security ✅ Positive impact on land use, biodiversity, and natural habitats With RED, we're empowering farmers to grow sustainably and efficiently, paving the way for a more resilient future in agriculture. 🌍#sustainable #agritech #venturecapital #circulareconomy
