*** New Publication *** Transmitting information securely and efficiently – that is the goal of future quantum networks. But what components are essential for building them? One promising candidate: the rare-earth element erbium. A research team from the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and the Technical University of Munich has achieved a significant breakthrough. They succeeded in spectrally resolving and controlling up to 360 erbium ions in a thin crystal membrane – more than three times as many as before. Their findings mark an important step forward in the pursuit of scalable quantum technologies. Read more here ➡ https://lnkd.in/dpRxZNKM

*** PhD Promotion at MPQ *** What is it like to be a PhD student at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics? There are currently over 120 PhDs students employed at our institute across five different areas of research: attosecond physics, laser spectroscopy, quantum many-body physics, quantum dynamics, and quantum theory. For a new video project, two of them, Marta Florido Llinas and Muhammad Thariq, have kindly agreed to let us join them in their regular paths and places at MPQ while they share their own personal opinions and perspectives on what doing a PhD at MPQ means to them and why they chose this place specifically for their studies. Enjoy watching, and if you think MPQ would also be the best fit for your doctoral studies, please visit ➡️www.mpq.mpg.de/phd for information and contact details.https://lnkd.in/daQ9SgsF

*** New Study on Quantum Advantage *** Theorists at MPQ have made a significant stride in the field of quantum computing. Their research addresses a long-standing question: can quantum computers really outperform classical computers in solving complex problems, despite the presence of errors? In a new study focusing on analogue quantum simulators the researchers could show precisely that: quantum simulators can remain stable and provide accurate results, even when subjected to errors. The findings suggest that practical quantum advantage, where quantum computers outscore classical ones, may become reality sooner than expected. The work was recently published in Nature Communications. ➡️https://lnkd.in/dJ446j63

*** Breakthrough for neutral atom platforms *** A team of physicists at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, led by Johannes Zeiher, in collaboration with the start-up company planqc has made significant progress in scaling up quantum computing platforms with neutral atoms. In an experiment at the MPQ, the researchers successfully set up a register of 1200 atoms in an optical lattice and kept it running continuously for over an hour. Until now, such arrangements have been difficult to maintain because of the inevitable loss of atoms. But the physicists have solved this problem with a sophisticated technique that allows them to successively reload new atoms into the qubit register - and, in principle, to operate it indefinitely. The project is part of the Munich Quantum Valley. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/deAP-ChG

*** New ERC Starting Grant *** Congratulations to Jad C. Halimeh, an independent Max Planck Research Group leader in the Theory division at MPQ, on winning a prestigious ERC Starting Grant! 🎊 The grant, awarded by the European Research Council (ERC), is the highest award for excellent young scientists in Europe. With the funding of 1.5 million euros, the theorist and his team intend to advance current concepts of quantum simulation, particularly for higher-dimensional gauge theories and their far-from-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics. In addition, the project will include extensive collaboration with experimental groups to implement these proposals on existing quantum hardware.#ERCStG➡ https://lnkd.in/dVu3e3Rf
