Fretting Corrosion vs. False Brinelling

Fretting corrosion and false brinelling are two different wear mechanisms that are sometimes confused. Fretting corrosion occurs when small reciprocating sliding motions between unlubricated surfaces leads to corrosion, usually oxidation. False brinelling occurs in lubricated rolling element bearings when slight rocking motions of the rolling elements leads to the formation of worn depressions on the raceway that replicate the shape and position of the rolling elements. While both are caused by small relative motions, fretting corrosion involves corrosion at the contact points while false brinelling involves wear from boundary lubrication conditions without corrosion.
