NBC, ESPN Win Big At 36th Annual Sports Emmys (original) (raw)
ESPN and NBC both won big tonight at the 36th annual Sports Emmy Awards, with each network taking home 11 trophies. NBC’s Olympics coverage helped considerably, with the event bringing the Peacock network 7 awards. ESPN meanwhile, won more broadly, with awards for Sports Documentary, Camera Work, and more piled on. The two networks between them took home more than half of the night’s awards, no shock as they lead with the most nominations going in. Meanwhile, Fox Sports trailed close behind, taking home 8 statues, including the first ever for Fox Sports 1.
The ceremony, held at New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, saw winners in more than 40 categories, including Outstanding Live Sports Special, Live Series, Sports Documentary, Play-by-Play Personality, and three categories honoring Spanish-speaking programming and talent. Presenters in appearance included Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds (MLB Tonight); Ernie Johnson, (Turner Sports); Adam Lefkoe (Bleacher Report); Marion Reimers (Fox Sports); Ernesto Jerez (ESPN Desportes); Rich Eisen (NFL Network); Eric LeGrand (Rutgers University); 12-time Olympic medalist Dara Torres; Ian Eagle (sportscaster, CBS); Shelley Smith (SportsCenter); Dan Hicks (NBC); Figure Skating Olympic Gold medalist Tara Lipinski; Ken Rosenthal (FOX Sports); and Tom Verducci (MLB on FOX).
