Public space has especially been questioned; our understanding of it and the way we use it have been completely revolutionised, opening up new interpretations and evaluations. At the end of 2020 Rhizoma Design and Research Lab launched a Call for Postcards, inviting architects, designers, artists, and activists to reflect upon the paradigm shift happening in our cities, observing and documenting the changing everyday praxis of inhabiting public space as well as envisioning its future, capturing those reflections and ideas in a Postcard. In a time when access to public space was restricted and art in public was paused, the call explored the role of a virtual space for the active creation, sharing, and fruition of public artworks. The call led to a virtual and physical exhibition titled Back to the Future of Public Space: Postcards from 2...

In this research the concept of density is extended to a three-fold meaning: density of buildings (with particular attention to density interpretation in terms of surface: FAR – floor area ratio), density of encounter (whose values are randomness and closeness), and density of uses (differentiation of activities and functions).

The identified design proposals, concerning roofing, facades and courtyards, are environmentally conscious and of passive solar type; they focus on the use of natural materials (green roofs and walls, permeable paving) and renewable energies (photovoltaic and geothermal). The central idea of these proposals is the economical and technical feasibility of the interventions. The whole process, aimed at defining shared targets, spawning initiatives that contribute both to increase the civic sense and to improve life and health conditions, create the preconditions for a real sustainability of the district.

The ideas discussed in the paper find their background in the research on the concept of care in feminist urbanism and feminist studies in general, and specifically in relation to the model of the Caring City, promoting a city that places care at its centre, and aims to include a wider selection of citizens in the construction of the public good. Through the analysis of two case studies of public spaces designed by solo-women architecture practices, this paper identifies an alternative relational paradigm which gives space to unheard voices in the urban environment through processes of inclusion and participation. THE PUBLIC ROLE OF DESIGN Barcelona ADAPT-r Day 5 July 2016 RMIT Europe, Carrer de Minerva 2, 080... more THE PUBLIC ROLE OF DESIGN
Barcelona ADAPT-r Day
5 July 2016
RMIT Europe, Carrer de Minerva 2, 08006 Barcelona
@ 14.00

The Adapt-r Day aims to offer insights into the public voices and roles of practitioners across Europe, revealing the diversity of practices and multiple voices in the contemporary city.
The public voice is the medium used by practitioners to express and reveal their specificity, role, and positioning within society. It is an authentic singular voice and the language the practitioners use to communicate and articulate their tacit knowledge.
Such a voice resonates in different dimensions of practice: the design process itself, the way of engaging with and guiding transformation processes, and the way of bringing about social changes.
Certain questions arise in relation to the topic:
What is the role of the creative practitioner within the society?
What are the related responsibilities?
How is the creative practitioner’s role perceived and recognized within the public realm?
Why is it important for practitioners to reflect on their public role?
Speakers from the ADAPT-r Program and professional and academic field will be invited to contribute to the ADAPT-r Day by presenting their own work, and giving insights into their research and professional path.
ADAPT-r fellows will be invited to focus their presentations on how the PhD process is helping them in discovering their public voice and how this process is affecting their ways of acting in the public realm.

The Estonian Academy of Arts Faculty of Architecture is developing a doctoral programme in Archit... more The Estonian Academy of Arts Faculty of Architecture is developing a doctoral programme in Architecture and Urban Planning in cooperation with a network of international architecture schools, as partner of ADAPT-r project.
The core feature of the methodological model offered by ADAPT-r and the Estonian Academy of Arts practice-led PhD program is that new knowledge is developed by reflection on, through and for creative practice.
The upcoming ADAPT-r Day aims to give an insight into practitioners' diverse methodologies in conducting their PhDs, related challenges and discoveries.
"Creative Practice = Research Methods" urges the presenters to reveal how the practice methods are the same as (not differ from) research methods. What are the key elements of creative practice research methods? Speakers will contribute to the discussion by presenting their own observations and heuristic.
Contributions by both ADAPT-r fellows and the Faculty's doctoral candidates aim to trigger debate with local practitioners, students and candidates from other fields (arts, design, technology, engineering, social sciences and humanities in general, etc).
ADAPT-r (acronym for Architecture, Design and Art Practice Training-Research) is an ITN Initial Training Network funded within the FP7 Marie Curie Program. ADAPT-r is a network of seven academic institutions, but it engages also with design studios. The project includes 40 fellowships, seven training conferences, a major research conference, a final exhibition, five key books, and a website providing public access to research and events. The PhD supported by the ADAPT-r project is structured through three years of research, and is organised in six Practice Research Symposia (two per year, held in Ghent and in Barcelona), namely the PRS, in which the practitioners are invited to present their research and submit it to public consideration.
