_12:40 am_[xenocanis] Sad News I had two degus a mother and a daughter. The daughter just passed away from what appears to be cancer and the mother is naturally depressed. The mother is about 3 years old and very healthy and I don't want her to be sad but I don't know if getting another degu would help her or if she would fight with a strange female. Any ideas? Also I have heard of some people keeping degus with other animals to keep the degu company. Any suggestions on compatible animals?I just don't want to see my Chalupa suffer now going through her daughter's death was painful for my wife and I. (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_12:21 am_[a11neon1ike] Sick Degu :( Sick degu. I have 4 degus currently. We just moved into a house in the country. They've always had their cage by a window but this house is a bit damp and maybe a little dustier than what they're used to. However, I recently cleaned out the room we're sharing together and noticed that one of the degus has been sneezing a lot. I pulled her out of the cage and have been holding her for the past 30 minutes. She sneezes every 5 seconds or so. I am worried sick...speaking of which I am actually sick with a cold. Is it possible for humans to pass a cold onto a degu? None of the other degus seem to be sneezing. Just this little one. She has had a little bit of discharge on her nose...it was solid. I pulled it off of her. I think tomorrow I will try to find a vet to take her to before the weekend starts. I have read online that adding vitamin C to their water is good for them. I have some tablets and will probably shave some of the tablet into their water. I never take this degu out of her cage because she is so shy. But right now I have her in the pocket of my hoody and she isn't struggling to escape. She is lying in there just fidgeting around, sneezing...probably urinating...but whatever. Any suggestions anyone? similar experiences to share? Thank you:( (Comment on this)

_2:05 pm_[a11neon1ike] Goodbye Degus... Life was going so well...I got accepted to my dream school> Rochester Institute of Technology. I've always wanted to go there. I'm going away for a summer program that begins June 1st. I've owned my degus for 2 years. I began with a male and a female and they gave birth to 8 little ones. I gave the males away. I was left with 4 females. I have grown attached to the mother and she has grown to love me. I'll click my tongue at her and she will look at me, her eyes half closed with love and trust. She'll fall asleep on my hand when I rest it in her cage.I just found out a few hours ago that I can't take them to RIT. They only allow non-carnivorous fish in a 10-gallon tank. I called and asked if I could bring "two hamsters in a 10 gallon tank"...no. ONLY fish. My degus live in a monstrous cage with two wheels, a bunch of wooden ledges, a wooden hut, and a tube that hangs at the top where they all like to sleep in a mound. All I wanted was to take a part of home with me...even if that meant getting rid of two degus and putting the remaining ones in a small fish tank. I would have built them things to play on. But I can't. I'm heartbroken. Is there anyone in Upstate NY looking for some degus? Cage included. Let me know. My friend may be able to take them, but I highly doubt it. Current Mood: depressed (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_6:17 pm_[redpoppies59] Can anybody help? Hello everybody, this is my first day on Livejournal and also my first post here!I've been a degu owner since January 09.I have four boys, called eenie meenie miney and mo (mo being the boss, and i sometimes call him big head!) Mo's speciality is chewing curtains and walls and sometimes.. fingers.I bought them at five months old, and was told they would be easy to hand train. Inside the cage they sit on my hands okay, if they get out of the cage it's a three and half hour job to catch them! Does anybody have any ideas or tips on how i can tame them better? Many thanks!Redpoppies x (4 Comments |Comment on this)

_10:57 pm_[twilight_senka] The Food Bowl Massacre (with no fatalities...yet) Any ideas on how to minimize fights over food?My four babies get on wonderfully, except at feeding time.At this point of the day they turn into feisty, screeching animals that launch across the cage at one another.Even the most timid of my four stands her ground at the food bowl - I've seen the scrawny thing (Squeak) keep the other three well away from the bowl.I've tried taking the most aggressive out (Nibble), and letting her sit on my desk to eat. But Squeak takes her place as the Evil Queen of the Food.I've tried a food bowl on each floor of the cage, but they congregate to fight at one. They get fed regularly and plenty.Anyone else have this problem? Anyone solved it? I'm assuming this is unusual, am I wrong?I'm just tired of watching food pellets fly across my room as they throw themselves in and out of the bowl.x-posted to degusCurrent Mood: complacent (Comment on this)

_10:37 am_[a11neon1ike] Squeak! I woke up this morning to hear a loud squeaking sound in my living room. I thought the Degus were playing on their wheel at first but then realized that the sound was too repetitive and far too loud. I walked in and saw the male sticking out of his hut, squeaking non-stop. His mouth would open and his ears would move back with each squeak. He seemed upset as though something was wrong. At first I thought one of the 6 babies (of almost 3 weeks of age) had died or something. All of the other degus in the cage were hiding in any place they could find away from the male who's squeaks were probably piercing. I tried calling an exoctic pet store in my area and they (of course) were clueless. So I don't know if the male mated with the female again, or if there was something wrong. Has anyone had this happen before? Thank you!(x-posted to degus) (5 Comments |Comment on this)

_9:15 pm_[crowskywalker] Sooo I have two degus, and they might have fleas. They live with my boyfriend, who just recently moved into a new apartment. Apparently the last people who lived there had a few cats and dogs, who happened to have fleas. The fleas are actually visable on the hardwood floor, and I'm unsure if they've managed to get into the cage.My problem is, I'm pretty sure degus are illegal where I live (long story how I got them), and vets for exotic pets are very uncommon...I don't even know for any. We've called the local vet but apparently the small animal/rodent vet is on vacation for another week.Sooo...does anyone have any experience with degus and fleas? Any advice?+ Crow (Comment on this)

_10:03 am_[a11neon1ike] Newborns and their Parents Last Saturday, on August 4th my female, Chip, gave birth to 6 beautiful little degus. I woke up and saw that the male was sitting at the top of their tall cage and Chip was in the large hut at the bottom, making noises.I found it odd that Chip was making noises by herself and looked into the hut to see a little head popping out from underneath her. I took Degutopia's advice and removed the male from the cage and put him in a small aquarium next to the cage so he could see his babies be born. Needless to say, he wasn't too happy to be taken away from his female and he pines for her STILL. Degutopia said that the male and female should be separated for 3 days due to the female's high hormone level, therefore causing the male to try to mate with her. This morning I just put Chip and Sir on the couch to let them interact. They both made a few pleasant squeaks and put their faces together. It didn't take long for the male to try mounting the female, who ran off in protest. So what do i do? Do I leave them separated for a few more days? I don't want to upset the female, but I also don't want my male to continue being depressed; he hasn't been eating as much:( Thanks for your help! (Comment on this)

_3:03 pm_[hey_kayla_jay] concern Hello again, I have a few questions about my degu, Loki. He's started breathing weird, like he's having a lot of diffculty breathing. He was breathing like this a few weeks ago but he stopped for a while, and now he's doing it again. He also looks kinda bloated. When I firt looked at him I thought that he just just had his fur puffed up, like maybe he was cold, but I held him he's definately bigger. He seems despondant. The first time I noticed him breathing oddly, I started feeding him more greens and hay and less pellets, but now that he's in bad shape again, I'm getting worried. Please help me, I think somethin gmay be really wrong with him. hye's about five years old if that helps at all. (Comment on this)

_10:55 pm_[jane_anon] Hello I have two diabetic degus - Brujo and Saxra - that I got about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Do you have any tips for taming them/helping them warm up to me? They are still quite nervous of me, and I don't want to intrude on them in fear it will make them more afraid. Also, what can I give degus as treats? They cannot have sugar, and a few other ingredients are no nos for them as well, I think. (Comment on this)

_2:32 pm_[twilight_senka] Hey,Got my four girls last Friday, were all rescued from what I have been told were appalling circumstances. Think 150 in three cages...Tuesday, Nibble started sneezing, and has been treated with antibiotics and the bedding has been changed from wood shavings to shredded paper. Then this morning she had some kind of noisy fit. She was jumping all over one level of the cage, never leaving the ground by more than a centimetre or two, landing on all fours. Accompanied by loud squeaks. This went on for about 15 minutes, but at the same time she seemed to be her normal bright self. Since then we have the occasional mini seizure, but nothing like this morning. She's been to the vets, her heart rate is fine. She's her normal bright, extra-curious self. She is also now being treated with some different anti-biotics for an eye infection that appeared over night.So... it appears to be entirely neurological, and doesn't really seem to have slowed her down at all.Does anyone have any experience of something like this in Degus?Apologies if you find this posted elsewhere across the net. Thanks, SenkaUPDATE: Stumpy, who is a similar size and therefore possibly age, and at a stretch maybe related, has just had a seizure. Current Mood: tired (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_12:19 am_[a11neon1ike] None Wow.It appears by the signs, that my female and male degu have just mated. They both stood in the corner of their large bird cage and began squeaking and chirping incredibly loud. Then Sir mounted the his lady, Chip, and they continued with their noise. Chip didn't seem to be offended by this and then sir pranced around for only a minute chirping loudly. I know that it is hard to find reliable information via internet, but I have read that the males make noise for nearly 30 minutes! Maybe they were just grooming each other? I think they would have mated by now. I've had them for about 2 months. I don't know if they are the same age; it seems like the female is younger. Can differences in age determine mating habits? Thanks, all. (crossposted to degus) (Comment on this)

_2:10 pm_[a11neon1ike] Nest building So I went out of town last weekend and had someone come over to provide water and food for my degu. They probably have never had as much privacy as they did last weekend and I believe they have mated.I am basing this assumption on the fact that when I came home, all of the bedding was pushed to one side of the tank. This seems like the beginning of a nest. I had to clean out their cage as the weekly mark had arrived.I felt bad destroying the nest in progress but it appears that two days later, they have begun to build it again.I provided them with some more materials. Now, my main question is: Is it bad to destroy their nest when cleaning out their cage? Or will they just build more and more? I can't leave the same bedding in their cage for 3 months! What do I do? (2 Comments |Comment on this)
