overnight, it had been subjected to many great changes over the past few millennia. Women occupied a
dignified and high place of respect in ancient India, relegated to backgrounds in colonial period and
struggling to secure their reverent position till now. Because of centuries of backwardness and
exploitation women lag behind in terms of education and awareness which is the major causes of female
criminality. Once being stigmatized they lost their social status and sometimes even their own families
refuse to accept them. Gender based discrimination, neglected medical care, unfulfilled health and
hygiene related issues, overcrowding etc are the main problems faced by female prisoners. The paradigm
of imprisonment has been shifted from punishment to reformation but still a lot needed to be done. The
paper has attempted to unveil the reality behind female criminality in India.

GOLDEN ERA OF EMPOWERMENT: WHERE DO FEMALE PRISONERS STANDS?, 2015
Government of India started with the philosophy of “women welfare” to improve the status of India... more Government of India started with the philosophy of “women welfare” to improve the status of Indian women after independence and it is praiseworthy to mention that within six decades of independence that philosophy has been shifted to “women empowerment”. Today Indian women hold key position in different government and private sectors, but on the dark side of coin it is also true that this section of empowered women is very small. Empowerment is a process of enhancing the capacity of individuals or groups and providing them opportunities to transform those learned skills or capacities into desired actions and outcomes. Empowering women to the world’s second most populous country is a tough row to hoe. Remarkable efforts have been made by various social agencies to bring each and every sect of female under the umbrella of empowerment but needs of majority of population is on the priority list of government.
At this juncture of time when wind of empowerment is everywhere it is worth mentioning that female prisoners who are the product of disempowerment are entirely excluded from the policies of empowerment. Though small number of researches has been done in this field, all of them shed light upon the facts that incarceration has more detrimental impact on lives and social status of female prisoners than male prisoners. Most of females in Indian prisons are illiterate, unskilled, have sporadic employment histories and from poor family backgrounds who commit crime to fulfill their basic needs. Many researchers also reported that most of women held behind the bars are the victims of situational crime, they have past histories of abuse and they commit crime to save their lives only after exhausting every alternative. The main philosophy of prison system is reformation of prisoners, but just confining criminals behind the bars dose not fulfill this objective. To transform female prisoners and to reintegrate them in the society two strategies can be worked out, i.e. proper planning and implementation of rehabilitation measures along with changing attitude of society towards prisoners. It is the moral duty of educationists and social workers to make people understand that prisoners have been punished for their crime. After their release, social humiliation and rejection worsen the situation which leaves no choice to them except recidivism. In the nutshell it can be concluded that empowerment of female prisoners can only be done with the combined efforts of welfare agencies, prison authorities, families and society. Welfare agencies along with NGO’s and other professionals need to start programmes in prisons and transform this human mass into a human resource by empowering them with the help of education and income-generating skills.

Today, due to globalisation and modernization the Indian society is in transition, so do the Indian family system. Modern parents have to maintain balance between their children and changing family system. Breaking down of traditional family system had extricated the valuable guidance of elderly therefore young parents have to carefully select the parenting practices on their own. To become a conscious parent in today’s rapidly changing world, parents need to be very vigilant about various factors like environment, age specific needs of children, behaviour management techniques and available family support services etc.

In Indian context the break-up of the age-old institution of joint family, long lost family values, unhappy interpersonal relationships, exploitation, abusive relationships and sometimes forced involvement are the major reasons of women's engagement in crime. Though female prisoner represents only 5-6 % of total prison population but consistent increase in the crime rate among women in past few decades become alarmingly conspicuous. Women involved in criminal activities usually have history of abuse and in most of the cases they are the real victim of situational crime. Generally, women are less inclined towards crime than man and tend to commit minor crime like forgery, prostitution, drug trafficking, and burglary etc. But the consequences they face are way more terrible, not in terms of duration of sentence but the psychological and social issues they confront behind the bars and social rejection after their release. Sometimes their own families refuse to accept them and children of female prisoners become the additional victim of their mother's act. Due to absence of female specially a mother from the family because of incarceration, the family itself become dysfunctional again. At this juncture of time there is a great need to attract researchers' and social workers' attention towards outcomes of dysfunctional families and tackle this problem before it takes some major form. Besides there is a great need to change community's attitude towards imprisonment so that reintegration of prisoners after completing their sentence in the family and society will be easier.
Additional Victims of Mother's Crime:Violation of Fundamental Rights of Children, 2015

Whether left outside or kept with incarcerated mother, the unexpected, drastic change in the natural surroundings of the child deeply affects its psyche. The acquitted children left outside with their extended family or on their own, experience social alienation, stigmatization, environmental disruption, poverty, scorn, shame, fear and low self-esteem. Whereas, those confined behind bars with their mother, have to spend their life as prisoners and witness lack of health and hygiene conditions, stimulation, education and recreational opportunities, as well as violent and abusive environment which has detrimental effect on their mental as well as physical health. Under both of the above mentioned circumstances, the tiny toes of children are exposed to too many adversities which severely violates their fundamental rights of liberty, safety, protection and education. The Honourable Supreme Court of India issued guidelines for children of prisoners in 2006 but the fact worth mentioning is that most of its suggestions are just enshrined to the papers with no practical implementation. Though due to small number children of prisoners can be considered as minority but they should not be invisible from welfare policies. This paper attempts to shed light upon the fact that there is a great need for sensitization of society on the adverse effect of absence of mother figure in the most formative years due to her imprisonment. Sincere initiatives are required to minimize effect of mothers’ imprisonment on her young children. Beside this, outlook of society about incarceration also needed to be changed. Prison should be considered as place for reformation and rehabilitation and most importantly the innocent victims of justice i.e. offspring’s of prisoners should not be entitled to any sort of indignity because of the deeds of their mothers.
