ladymacbeth6 PAWS takes in over 30,000 animals a year. Yesterday alone we received 54 cats - and only had about 12 adoptions. We need to amp up our adoption rates, now! Spread the word! There are hundreds of beautiful, adoptable cats and dogs at PAWS! Here's just a sample of some of the beautiful animals who need homes. Please, cross-post this and spread the word. The animals need you!**( Pictures and Descriptions of Animals HereCollapse )**SEE MANY MORE OF OUR ADOPTABLE ANIMALS HERE:http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/PA235.htmlIF YOU CAN FOSTER OR ADOPT AN ANIMAL: Come to the shelter (111 W. Hunting Park Avenue) immediately. A staff person or foster care volunteer will be thrilled to help you find the right animal(s) for you to take into safety. Foster care and adoption hours are 11 am to 6 pm every day of the week. Directions to the shelter are available here: http://phillypaws.org/Directions/default.aspPAWS, the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, is a donor-funded division of the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Association (PACCA) dedicated to saving the lives of Philadelphia's homeless, abandoned and unwanted animals. Taking in nearly 30,000 animals each year, PAWS is dedicated to making Philadelphia a city in which all healthy and treatable animals are guaranteed a home. Supporting PAWS helps fund lifesaving initiatives including adoption and foster care programs, spay and neuter surgeries, low-cost vaccinations, and other community-based programming, all of which help reduce and will ultimately eliminate the unnecessary killing of Philadelphia's animals. Animal Control in PHilly Sep. 24th, 2008 @ 11:26 pm
ladymacbeth6 RIght now, there is a lot going on with Animal Control in Philadelphia. PACCA is in danger of losing their contract with the city, as the health dept has put out an RFP on a contract to start Jan 1 2009, even though PACCA's contract is through June 30, 2009. Philly PAWS and PACCA have gone leaps and bounds beyond what animal control in philly was doing 5 years ago, and that can't stop. Philly must be No-Kill. There is no lifesaving language in the current RFP, it only calls for "disposal of animals."Read more here - http://phillypaws.org/savelivesnow/Join the cause here - http://phillynokill.com/NoKill/Welcome.htmlAnd contact these people, too! http://www.phila.gov/health/Commissioner/CommissionersOffice.htmlPlease, the only thing that will save the 30,000+ animals that come through animal control each year are concerned citizens. Many Mom Cats and Babies at PAWS need Your Help! Aug. 25th, 2008 @ 08:59 am
ladymacbeth6 I'm a volunteer at PAWS, the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, and I've been looking for more places to get the word out about fostering kittens. PAWS/PACCA gets over 30,000 animals a year and right now we are still battling kitten season and usually have between 25 and 40 litters who need to be fostered or they'll be euthanized due to space. I thought there might be people in this community who'd be interested in fostering - please let me know if you are and i can help you out. This is a post I make a couple times a week with pictures i've taken of every litter of kittens in the building, and i post it on craiglist, myspace, facebook, blogs, and anywhere I can find - please let me know if you know of any other good places i might find philly-area foster parents! Thanks!( pictures of kittens and moms who need foster care!Collapse )(Leave a comment)

(cross-posted)Hey all,I work for a non-profit, Fair Trade organization called Ten Thousand Villages. Basically we work directly with artisans in developing country to ensure that they're getting proper treatment and fair prices for their crafts. The main reason I'm posting this is because the 1122 Walnut Street store is attempting to become more active with generating interest in the local press. We're looking to have our store and Fair Trade be the the feature of stories in local newspapers, as well university newspapers. TV and Radio would be great as well, but print seems like a more attainable starting point. If you know any editors or writers that might be interested, or if you just have any general advice on how I might go about getting this all started, please let me know. This is all pretty new to me and any help would be appreciated!Take care,Andy at Ten Thousand VillagesMar. 29th, 2006 @ 05:34 pm(Leave a comment)
» apartment hunting
hi everyone - my husband and i have decided to move at the end of our lease (mid-july), as we've reached our limit with our apartment complex and management. if you're living in an apartment in the area (or have a friend who is) and you either love it or hate it, please comment. our basics - we're looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom of at least 750 sq feet. dishwasher is a must have (my husband has told me that if we again move to a place without a dishwasher, he will refuse to ever wash another dish for me). i would really like a balcony, and we need either lots of closet space or an extra storage area. we'd like to spend under $900, but would be willing to go a bit above that if it was really worthwhile - washer/dryer in unit, etc. we currently live in secane and would be okay with staying in this area or prospect park/morton/folcroft - but i'd like to move to media or west chester so we're looking there first. suggestions? xp to the community boredinburbspaMar. 10th, 2006 @ 09:23 am(3 comments | Leave a comment)

» We lost our lease! Everything must go!!1!
My landlord is taking me to court next week. It's unlikely that I'm going to be able to hang on to my lease (and to make things worse, I'll probably have to crash at my sister's in South Philly). So what I need are links to landlord/tenant law, or a recommendation for folks who are versed in that sort of thing. I don't expect to get my security deposit back, but I'd like to make sure that things are handled appropriately on their end and that they don't try to bone me with fees and costs associated with turning the apt over (like rehabbing it for the next tenant). Also, how long can I stay there if they're charging me for the place, that sort of thing...Thanks...Nov. 5th, 2005 @ 12:08 pm(1 comment | Leave a comment)

Posted on Wed, Nov. 02, 2005In Delaware County, a chance for diversityWith a $50 million budget and 3,000 employees, Delaware County government ranks as one of the major employers in the Pennsylvania suburbs. But don't kick yourself for not having heard of it.The Republican organization that has controlled Delaware County Council for 30 years prefers a low profile. Indeed, quiet, status-quo government that doesn't ruffle or roil voters has been a long-term prescription for victory for the GOP. Notably, Republican incumbent Linda Cartisano has already vowed that there will be no county property tax increase in 2006.Cartisano and running mate John Whelan, are, like most candidates the local GOP puts forward, well qualified. Both have held elective office at the school board and municipal level, respectively. Both now serve in a variety of solicitorships across the county, making them well informed on the nuts and bolts of local government. And both speak capably about carrying on the council's efforts to assist in enhancing urban, eastern Delaware County towns through the Renaissance Program - and to aid the more suburban towns in the county's western part through open-space preservation. But there's one thing that's forever been lacking on the County Council that only an outsider can fix: diversity. This year, Democratic candidate John Innelli offers a strong choice to voters. He is not only able to take a fresh look at such issues as whether Delaware County needs its own health department but also can serve as a watchdog on spending. With two degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the last 23 years in securities law, he's well equipped to raise questions. His background puts him well ahead of Democratic running mate Nancy Baulis, a Philadelphia schoolteacher. The Inquirer endorses LINDA CARTISANO and JOHN INNELLI for Delaware County Council.Nov. 3rd, 2005 @ 03:19 pm(2 comments | Leave a comment)

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. DelawareCounty is the sole county in Pennsylvania with a one-party government. Thatparty, the Delaware County Republican Party, has lost touch with the valuesof its citizens and runs the county government to perpetuate its soleinterest: self-enrichment at taxpayer expense. It is time to elect as countycouncil members two individuals who will change the courthouse culture ofentitlement. This year Delaware County has an operating budget of nearly $500 millionthat consists of a social services fund and a county general fund. I don't work for these guys nor am I affiliated with them in any way but: If you guys are lookin for a good spook this halloween, you need to go to scareworld. Me and my girlfriend went last Friday night, and okay GRANTED I'm a big scaredy cat and freak out over any little thing, but THIS....This took the cake, fuck Bates Motel, and fuck JASONS WOODS. YOu have to go to scare world. It's in Claymont, DE..........and REALLY frickin close to Aston, PA. I dont know how to direct you but go to their website at www.scareworld.com. They have like 5 haunted houses and for 12 dollars you choose one, for 20 you pick 3 and for 25 you can go to any 5 of them. We went to AMYTIVILLE, TERROR in 3D (or was it 4D) , and INSANITY. AMYTIVILLE was scary...the "monsters" were in your face and jumped at you at every corner. INSANITY was an indoor maze with FOG everywhere. We walked in, and after 3 feet got freaked out and asked for the closest exit. Not too many people make it through the maze and when we were at the exit the group that was in front of us was also outside. The one girl was crying b/c she was so scared. She was in her 20s. TERROR in 3D wasn't so scary but it was a lot of fun. THey give you 3d glasses and you walk through the house, theres a couple clowns and such but the cool part of the house was the effects, very colorful and trippy. So yeah, if you are looking for something scary, and something close... Check it out. If you've already been there tell me what do you think. IF you think it sucked, tell me that too. The only thing that sucked was the lines. So yeah, there you go.Oct. 17th, 2005 @ 01:48 pm(Leave a comment)

Does the AAA in Springfield do a driving school?I googled and couldn't find.. but I don't feel like calling the place in case it's a rediculous question. Sadly the only thing I know about this is that the AA in England does a driving school... :'( I'm such a n00b at almost 25 years old :(Aug. 24th, 2005 @ 09:41 am(1 comment | Leave a comment)
» Erm?
Hey guys, quick question.A lot of people in philadelphia post about this and I know I find it kind of annoying after a while. I haven't seen it here though.Anyway, I'm turning 21 in a few short weeks and while I have a few ideas up in the air, nothing is set in stone. I was wondering what the good bars to go to are in the Delco area. My birthday falls on a Friday night, so are there any good places to go then?_Edit: I work at Barnaby's in Havertown...so please, don't suggest that =)_Jul. 28th, 2005 @ 06:19 pm(11 comments | Leave a comment)

» Trustworthy car mechanic?
Does anybody know of a trustworthy car mechanic near Media? I had a bad experience with Carosel Toyota a while back, and I would really prefer to go to some place that isn't going to try to screw me over. Thanks for your help!Jul. 5th, 2005 @ 01:41 pm(2 comments | Leave a comment)

» fence/landscaping laws?
Does anyone know if you can find laws pertaining to fencing or landscaping online? (Specifically for Folcroft.) Supposedly, you can't put up a fence around your property anymore, but I haven't been able to find the actual law- I want to see if there are any exceptions/loopholes/etc. or if we can get around it by putting shrubs up around the yard. I'm not Googlephobic, but every time I've tried to search through Google results, I'm directed to a bunch of crap that applies to businesses or specific court cases. Thanks in advance!Jun. 22nd, 2005 @ 04:58 pm(3 comments | Leave a comment)

Dear Friend,I'm supporting Josh Richard for Upper Darby Township Council because I think Josh has the right stance on issues affecting our community. That's why I think Josh should receive Democracy for America's endorsement. Democracy for America (DFA) supports fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidates all over the country. One of DFA's main criteria is grassroots support. You can help Josh Richard receive DFA's endorsement by recommending Josh on Democracy for America's website:http://www.democracyforamerica.com/recommendationThanks! Behold. udpac. If you've been associated with Summer Stage or UD's performance groups, you should join today. :PYes, that's right. There's finally a community for all the Summer Stagers and other UD performing arts nerds from past to present on LJ. I daresay the combined LJ and theatre drama will cause the community to implode upon itself. You can thank dietzorama1701 for this. He mentioned Xanga had some sort of "Summer Stager blogring" (whatever that means). I won't see Xanga one-upping LJ like that. ;-)May. 8th, 2005 @ 06:34 pm(Leave a comment)
