It was late by the time they got back to her apartment. It seemed as though lately they spent a lot of time at her apartment, and it was starting to get a real lived in feel to it. Before they had started to date, she thought to herself, it had been a place to just rest her head. Now, amazingly, it felt like a home to her. Maybe not to him, because he had a place of his own, but it was beginning to feel like a place where she wanted to be these days.
“That was a very interesting evening,” he said, shrugging out of his coat jacket.
“I know. And right now I’m so tired all I want to do is sleep,” she said with a yawn.
He paused. “Do you want me to stay over, then?”
She smiled at him. “Of course I do. I’ll even set my alarm so that you can go and get ready for work tomorrow.”
“You don’t need to,” he said. “I’m going to work a night shift tomorrow. Remember?”
She thought for a moment and her smile turned sheepish. “I forgot.”
“Hey, if you’re anywhere near being as tired as you look, it’s understandable.” He went over to her and kissed her forehead, and she relaxed a little more. “I’ll be in there in a minute. Just want to hang my jacket up.”
“All right,” she said with a nod, heading into her bedroom. She made it three steps in before she saw Malachi sitting on her bed and she groaned. “What have I told you about being in my bedroom?”
He looked at her. “That you don’t like it.”
“Precisely. What are you doing here?”
“Did you have any visions last night?”
She thought for a moment. “No, actually, I did not.”
“There may be a large one coming soon. Be prepared for it. It will be very important.”
She nodded. “Now, would you be so kind as to leave? I would like to change and crawl into bed.” He nodded to her once and then he was gone. She was just about to strip off her shirt when she heard a chuckle from the doorway. “You heard?”
“Yeah. He does that a lot, doesn’t he?”
“Mostly when you’re not around, when it comes to nighttime visits,” she said. “He’s become more respectful of my privacy as of late. And he never visits me when I’m at your apartment.”
“Maybe you should stay at my apartment more, then,” he said seriously.
She thought about it and then shook her head. “This place is really starting to feel like home. Don’t think I could give that up.”
He nodded. “All right.”
She thought for a moment. “You have nothing to sleep in tonight, do you?” she asked. “You weren’t planning to be here tonight.”
He shrugged slightly. “I can always sleep in my boxers.”
“Good point,” she said. Then she thought for a moment. “If you’d like to keep a few things here, I wouldn’t have a problem with that. Clothes, toiletries…things like that.”
He grinned at her. “Okay. You can keep some stuff at my place, too.”
“All right,” she said with a smile. “It would be nice not to have you rushing off so early every morning you stay over.”
“When I bring clothes I don’t have to rush,” he pointed out.
“I know, but most times you don’t bring a suit to change into, so you have to rush. There’s some mornings I would like to just stay in bed with you a little longer.”
He went over to her and pulled her into a hug. She relaxed against him and held her close. “I’m starting to hate leaving you in the morning,” he said quietly.
“That’s good to know,” she replied. “I’m starting to hate it when you leave.” He stayed quiet for a few minutes, just holding her close. Finally, she pulled away. “I think we should go to bed now.”
“Yeah,” he said. They both undressed quickly, with her changing into something to sleep in, and crawled into bed. He pulled her close against him and she relaxed into the embrace, knowing that tomorrow he would be there and she would get to keep him around a little longer than usual. It was a pleasant thought that made her forget about the fact that she was probably going to have a rocky night’s sleep tonight.
