Effects of environmental conditions categorized in two kinds, given conditions individual teachers do not have control over and user-set conditions teachers as building users determine, were analyzed. Purposes of and ways of arranging the use of multi-purpose spaces differed between teachers using the space more/less frequently.

An experimental remodeled classroom was designed and installed. The experimental classroom was made by simple improvements in furnishing and replacement/rearrangement of furniture to improve functional adaptability and acoustic efficiency that could be practically undertaken in ordinary schools. Results of trial use sessions in actual classes and evaluations by teachers and pupils demonstrated that classroom remodeling facilitated diverse teaching settings and activities in classrooms as well as show practical issues to be considered.

This study aimed to collect empirical data and investigate differences, if any, between native and newcomer adolescents’ sense of their hometown. A Tokyo suburb with a large-scale new town was the context of the study. Eighth grade students of three junior high schools, one in the new town, one in the existing community and one straddling both communities, responded to a questionnaire asking about their knowledge of and preferences for places. They further marked the geographical area that they considered their hometown on a map and rated their level of attachment to it. Students’ everyday activities were heavily dependent on shopping centers. Attachment levels of native students were lower than those of new town students. Different patterns in perception of places were observed in native and new town students. While new town students’ perceptions of their hometowns...
