This great project of Maulana Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi met a grand success and was welcomed by the madrasas as well as intellectuals. Therefore, many renowned madrasas and universities adopted the idea of MMERC for training their graduates in English and other subjects. Darul Uloom Deoband, Nadwatul Ulama Lucknow and many other institutions are presently offering this course in their campuses, while several universities like Aligrah Muslim University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) introduced a similar course (i.e. bridge course) for madrasa graduates as post-madrasa education.
The book in your hand is a Souvenir – collection of papers presented in the 3-Day International Seminar held on the occasion of MMERC Silver Jubilee in New Delhi. In this Souvenir, along with the seminar details, you will find research papers shedding light on Markazul Ma’arif and its achievements, DELL (Diploma in English Language and Literature) course, as well as on the main theme of the Seminar: ‘Ulama, Muslim Youth and Contemporary Challenges’. It is interesting to note that most of the paper contributors are alumni of MMERC and products of the DELL course. A few of the authors are inspiring graduates; we did not alter much in the language of their papers to keep complete originality in letter and spirit. Nevertheless, I should confess that there may be typos and proofreading errors in the book because of shortage of time to the Souvenir Committee.
I thank the MMERC patron, the Seminar Conveners, my colleagues in the Souvenir Committee and all contributors for their part in producing this wonderful work in a very short span of time.
May Allah enable us to serve the community and the nation more and better – Aameen!

As the book deals with the history of madrasas through ages it discusses the burning issues like fundamentalism, terrorism, syllabus and curricula of madras, the author being a madras product himself was duly able to present the reality. This is, undoubtedly, a tremendous effort of the young author that beckons a brighter future for him. All the Civilizations of the world have adopted the two extreme positions on this matter. Rome, Greece and Europe had tested the two extremes throughout their history. Some civilized nations like Greece once and presently the so-called civilized Western nations have equated them with men in every sphere of life. They drew them out of their homes for total emancipation. While other Country like ancient Persia went to other extreme, describing women as a blunder of Nature and a creature, which ought to be ignored. (1) The Greece, Rome and Christian Europe regarded women as the root cause of evil, gateway to Satan and an unavoidable creature. The women had no value and no status in the society. (2) Hinduism regarded women as a salable commodity. The women were deprived of basic human rights. Even a widow had to burn herself with the dead body of her husband. (3) The Islamic viewpoint regarding women is quite moderate. Unlike the other religions and civilizations of the world, it offers a divine solution to this matter. It directly addresses the nature and appeals to the heart of human beings. It adopts middle path and takes into consideration the physical formation of the women to give them their due status in human society.

The ancient Greece and China are said to make extraordinary progress in the field of education an... more The ancient Greece and China are said to make extraordinary progress in the field of education and art but they also did not favour the education for all. Plato has dreamt of democracy and equality but he also could not go beyond education for some particular segments of the society. 1 Education in India, before the advent of Islam, was considered to be the monopoly of a particular class. The lower-class people were excluded and deprived of knowledge. The Indian society was divided into four categories; (1) Brahmins who worked as priests, scholars and teachers. (2) Kshatriyas who served as rulers, warriors and administrators. (3) Vaishyas who were supposed to be agriculturalists and merchants. (4) Shudras who served as laborers and service providers. Only the Brahmins, among them, had right to get education even when their civilization was on its full swing. Though there were mass revolts against the notion and later took the shape of Buddhism and Jainism, but soon these religions grew weaker the previous condition returned. None can deny the glory of Nalanda and Taxila universities, but after all, the fact is that the common people were always deprived of education in ancient India. The lower-caste person was not even allowed to hear the scriptures. If sometimes a lower-caste person happens to gain a hearing by steal used to be put melted lead in his ears. As if it was a heinous crime for him to listen the Vedic verses. 2 Likewise, the Europe, those days, was passing through dark ages of history. The churches fully controlled the affairs of the citizens. The scientists, artists and men of learning were tortured and sometimes even torched to death. Galileo was sentenced to death because he came up with the idea that the earth evolves round the sun. Bruno was burned alive for he was of the opinion that the universe has some other planets like earth. 3 Similarly, ignorance was prevailing all over Arabia. Not only that the entire tribes were illiterate but also some of them used to feel proud of being unlettered. Quraish, the head of all tribes in Arabia, had only 17 persons who knew writing. Those who were assigned to write the revelation they also were 43 out of all thousands of the companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him. 4 In 570 (AD), when the sun of Islam rose from the horizon of Arabian Peninsula in its fullest blaze the entire world was shrouded by darkness and steeped in ignorance and long slumber. The first slogan that Islam chanted in this horrible atmosphere was about 'education'. The earliest verses that revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) invited people to education: "Read in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher who created. Created man out of a (mere0 clot of congealed blood. Read and thy Lord is Most Bountiful. He, Who taught (the use of) the pen. Taught man that which he knew not." [AlQuran 96:1-5] These five verses of the holy Quran along with many others are considered to be fountainhead of education in post-Islamic history. They created a remarkable eagerness towards education and filled the

He was no doubt the greatest Islamic scholar of India and one of the celebrated thinkers of the Muslim history. Shāh Walīullāh Dehlawi’s main focus was on the Qur'an, Hadīth, 'Aqā'id (beliefs), Kalām (scholastics), Tasawwuf (spiritual sciences), socio-political and ethical philosophy.
He lived at a turbulent time in India when the Mughal Empire (1526-1857) was declining swiftly after the bright and powerful reign of Abu al-Muẓaffar Muḥiud-Dīn Muḥammad Aurangzeb ‘Ālamgīr (1618 – 1707) who was last great Mughal Emperor and ruled the widest parts of the greater India of known history for nearly 50 years (1658 –1707). In view of the prevailing political chaos, moral corruption and economic declining of the East, Shāh Walīullāh chalked out a plan of complete revolution. In this context, he expounded rare political, social, economical and religious theories which are scattered in his various works.
Maulāna Syed Muḥammad Miyān in his books ‘Ulama-e-Hind ka Shāndār Mādhi (Glorious Past of the Muslim Scholars) and ‘Tahrīk Reshmi Rūmāl’ (Silk Letter Movement) has summarised these thoughts which we present in the next lines with necessary additions of resources, background, historical context as well as conclusion.

It arrived in India through the Arabs who visited India for trade or warfare. The majority of these scholars belonged to Yemen, Egypt and Hejaz. The Shāfi’i community in India produced several great scholars and writers who are well-known in Indian history.

The period of Muslim rule in India is divided into two major eras; Delhi Sultanate from 1206 to 1... more The period of Muslim rule in India is divided into two major eras; Delhi Sultanate from 1206 to 1526 and Mughal Empire from 1526 to 1857.
The Mughal Empire was the last as well as the most powerful Muslim ruling dynasties of the Indian subcontinent. It contributed greatly to the Indian culture, civilization, art, architecture, literature and other sciences. The Mughal era in India witnessed a great deal of expansion in Islamic sciences too. It produced world renowned saints, scholars and experts, like Mujaddid Alf Thāni Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi (d. 1624), Shaikh Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dehlawi (d. 1642), and Shāh Walīullah Muhaddith Dehlawi (d. 1762).
The Mughals followed Hanafi School of Fiqh and continued to regard it officially as constitution of their empire just like their predecessors of Delhi Sultanate. The judicial system of Mughal India was entirely based on Hanafi Fiqh. They appointed Hanafi qaḍīs and muftīs to settle the disputes of their subjects.
The education system of Mughal India also paid greater attention to Fiqh as the judicial system required jurists and experts of Islamic Fiqh. The books of Hanafi Fiqh i.e. Al-Qudūri by Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Qudūri (d. 1036) and Al-Hidāyah fi Sharh Bidāyat al-Mubtadi by Burhānuddīn ‘Ali bin Abu Bakr al-Margīnāni (d. 1196) were part of the syllabus. The ‘Ulama of Firangi Mahal in Lucknow in later Mughal period gained popularity and promoted Fiqh enormously.
The Mughal era produced numerous Fiqh literature, most important among them was Fatāwa Hindīya which was compiled under the supervision of Emperor Aurangzeb (reign 1658–1707). The era produced other numerous books on different topics and aspects of Islamic Fiqh, especially Tawāli’ al-Anwār ‘ala al-Durr al-Mukhtār by ‘Allama ‘Abid Sindhi (d. 1841).
During the Mughal rule in India, there lived many great scholars of Fiqh, jurists and experts of Islamic law.
Summarily, the period of Mughal rule in India had a rich history pertaining to Hanafi Fiqh, as it contributed Fiqh literature of repute, produced great scholars, its educational and judicial system drew its affiliation to Hanafi Fiqh.

The Mughal era (1526 to 1857), besides enriching the Indian civilization and culture, contributed greatly to academic works on Islamic sciences, especially Fiqh.
The rich heritage of Fiqh contributed by the Muslim scholars of the era ranges from fatwa collections, fiqhi issues, principles of fiqh to judicial system, marginal notes on famous fiqhi texts. There are several hundred books and treatises written at different topics of fiqh. Only some of these works are published and most of them are preserved in different libraries in India and abroad.
This paper will particularly explore the fatwa collections of Mughal era which are at least ten in number. The most famous among them is Fatāwa Hindiya compiled under the supervision of Emperor Aurangzeb (reign 1658 – 1707), while the others are: (2) Fatāwa Bābri by Nūr al-Dīn al-Khawāfi (d. 1670) (3) Fatawa Amīnia by Amīn ibn ‘Ubaidullāh in 1541 (4) Faāwa Barāhīniya by Nasīr al-Dīn Lahori in 1588 (5) Al-Fatāwa al-Naqshbandiya by Shaikh Mu’īnuddīn al-Naqshbandi (d. 1674) (6) Fatāwa Majmu’a al-Barkāt by Shaikh Abu al-Barkāt Dehlawi (d. 1707) (7) Mukhtasar al-Fatāwa al-Shāfi by Qadhi Abdul Hamid Thathwi (8) Fatāwa Sirāj al-Munīr by Mufti Tabi’ Muhammad Lakhnawi in 1708 (9) Fatāwa Azīzi by Shāh ‘Abdul ‘Azīz Dehlawi (d. 1823).
But the most encyclopaedic of all these works is Tawāli’ al-Anwār by ‘Allāmah ‘Ābid al-Sindi al-Madani (d. 1841) which is the commentary of famous fatwa book ‘al-Durr al-Mukhtār’ by Shaikh ‘Ali ‘Alāuddīn al-Haskafi (d. 1677). ‘Allāmah ‘Ābid Sindhi was born in India, but later moved to Yemen and finally settled in Madinah (under the Ottoman Caliphate) where he produced this great work. The manuscript of this book consists of 20,000 pages and if published it may appear in around 60 volumes. The manuscripts of this book are preserved in different libraries of India, Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

It is considered the mother of Islamic seminaries and traditional madrasas in the Indian subcontinent and other parts of the world. The educational and reform movement led by Darul Uloom and other madrasas was later transformed into a School of Thought and now it has great influence over Muslims in different part of the world including South Africa.
South Africa is home to nearly one million Muslims and most of them originally belong to the Indian subcontinent. The majority of the South African Muslims of the Indian origin follows Deobadni School of thought. They are living in South Africa in peace and have proved to be law-abiding citizens as well as they enjoy freedom to practice their religion, to build mosques and madrasas.
This is an interesting topic of research how these Muslim migrants reached South Africa and what they have contributed to South Africa as well as to the Muslim world.
In my paper I wish to explore the historical roots of the Deobandi Muslims in South Africa along with tracing their theological affiliation to Deoband school. As naturally the paper will cover the contributions of Deobandi Muslims in South Africa in preaching the true message of Islam, imparting Islamic education, building mosques and madrasas, extending humanitarian and social services and setting one of the best example of coexistence and peaceful living along with introducing the Islamic heritage in South Africa and surrounding African countries. In this regard, the paper shall briefly contain the accounts of great Deobandi Muslim personalities and outstanding Deobandi institutions in the country

The Muslim rule in India can be categorised into the following stages; (1) from the era of Caliphate up to Arab Governors in Sind i.e. 645 to 856, (2) Ghaznavid rule in northern India from 1004 to 1186, (3) Delhi Sultanate from 1206 to 1526 and finally (4) Mughal Empire from 1526 to 1857.
It was Delhi Sultanate that carried the flag of Islam from western and northern sides into central and eastern and southern India. It established strong Muslim rule in Delhi and united several parts of the country under its control. During Delhi Sultanate period, several dynasties ruled India one after another: (1) Mamlook (Slave) Dynsty from 1206 to 1290, (2) Khilji Dynasty from 1290 to 1320, (3) Tughlaq Dynasty from 1320 to 1414, Sayyids Dynasty from 1414 from 1451 and lastly Lodhi Dynasty from 1451 to 1526. Besides, there were regional Muslim states and kingdoms at occasions in southern, central, western and eastern India during the Sultanate period.
The period of Delhi Sultanate was a bright era of Indian history which witnessed revolutionary changes in education, sciences, architecture, fine arts, administration etc. The Islamic sciences, especially, fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) flourished and expanded during this period. Fiqh had central position among all Islamic sciences and being scholar of fiqh was the zenith of academic excellence. The rulers adhered to Hanafi Fiqh and thus the administration of Delhi Sultanate was based on Hanafi Fiqh. They established madrasas where Hanafi Fiqh was taught. They sponsored ulama, qadhis and scholars of fiqh who therefore were encouraged to produce great works on Hanafi Fiqh like Al-Fatawa al-Ghiyasia, Fawayid Ferozshahi, Fatawa Qarakhani besides other fatwa and fiqh literatures. The encyclopedia of Hanafi Fiqh, Fatawa Tatarkhania, is a matchless legacy left behind by Delhi Sultanate. There were numerous great scholars of fiqh during the Sultanate period who contributed greatly to the promotion of Hanafi Fiqh in India.

Hadhrat Maulana Syed Muhammad Ali Mungeri (1846-1927) was the stalwart and genius personality of British India who was not only prominent spiritual guide of his age, rather a prolific writer, eminent educationist and great warrior of Islam. Maulana Mungeri possessed many distinct qualities and served in various fields. On one hand, he was great spiritual mentor of scores of Muslims from across the country, while on the other hand he was the head of the Nadwatul Ulama that founded Darul Uloom in Lucknow, which aimed at maintaining balance between the old traditional and the modern education systems. Along with preaching and propagating Islam through guiding people towards the straight path of Islam, he fulfilled duties as a warrior of Islam and defended Islam against the Christian missionary onslaught as well as refuted Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian (Punjab) who claimed to be prophet. As he fought on these fronts as with his tongue and action, he picked up pen also and authored scores of books and treatises on various subjects spanning from religion, theology, comparative study of religions to deviant sects and thoughts.
