New maps of extant Hohokam villages dating from approximately AD 800 to 1050 (including many never previously mapped) are compared to data from villages that have received large-scale excavation to identify commonalities in structure. Structural units consisting of plazas surrounded by suprahousehold groups and their associated cemeteries, refuse deposits, roasting facilities, and ball court(s) are found to be the basic universal social unit which is replicated on larger villages. Some patterning in the specific arrangements of these structural units was identified, as were patterns related to the length of occupation. Findings of the study are considered for their implications in cultural resource management investigations.

Over 4,100 separate designs have now been recorded in the area making it one of only a handful of such concentrations in the state. In January of 1984, the Bureau of Reclamation contracted with the Institute for American Research for a sample survey of the upper bajada and mountain edge zones of the Picacho Mountains and a detailed study of the petroglyph sites within this zone. A final report, co-authored by James P. Holmlund, documenting the results of this study will be completed In August, 1986 (Wallace and Holmlund, in preparation). This brief presentation will touch on some of the highlights of the petroglyph study. The research design developed for this study (Wallace and Doelle 1984) was structured to compile and evaluate a regional data base for petroglyph studies as well as to acquire more detailed information for sites which will be most directly impacted through the construction of the Tucson Aqueduct. Although the bulk of analyses and all of the field effort involved under contract with the Bureau of Reclamation concerned sites in the Picacho Mountains, a large additional sample of petroglyph sites from the Tucson Basin and vicinity and the Samaniego Hills had been previously recorded and were used for a comparative data base.

of the Hohokam Culture in southern and central Arizona is discussed.
The refined sequence is applied to ceramic sherd lots and restorable vessels
from the extant collections from excavations at Snaketown to produce new
and more refined dating of the contexts at the site. Structures, mortuary contexts,
caches, mounds, middens, pits, and other features are dated with the
results compared to prior chronological assignments allowing for a discussion
of how the new chronology compares to previous approaches. In the process,
key events in the history of the settlement that affect conclusions about
Hohokam prehistory are considered such as the age of mound capping
events, the construction of the ball courts and Mound 16 platform mound,
and the origin and terminus of occupation at the village.

The Roosevelt Community Development Study (RCD) is intended to examine the developmental sequence... more The Roosevelt Community Development Study (RCD) is intended to examine the developmental sequence of the
prehistoric agriculturalists of the Tonto Basin. This project was one of three archaeological data recovery projects undertaken for the Bureau of Reclamation prior to the raising of Roosevelt Dam in the Lower Tonto Basin of central Arizona. The RCD project involved an investigation of the nature of Preclassic settlement in the Basin, a consideration of the Preclassic to Classic period transition, and a look at the initial development of the platform mound complex. Desert Archaeology was selected to perform this study, which
is focused on a continuous 4-mile study area along the north side of the Salt River at the east end of Roosevelt Lake. This area contains three large Classic period sites. Two of these sites have platform mounds, and the third site may contain over 100 masonry rooms. From west to east these large sites are the centers of the Griffin Wash, Pyramid Point, and Meddler Point site complexes. In all, 29 sites will be sampled (Figure 1.2). This volume presents the research design for the RCD project.

The paper is a study of limestone and coral disks found in excavations on Cozumel with the goal of determining their function. Ninety-eight of the structures were fully or partially excavated. Also identified were a historic canal and evidence pointing to the location of the historic Point of the Mountains stage station, the Francisco Ruelas homestead, and a small Yaqui settlement dating to the 1920s. Research focused on the delineation of prehistoric settlement structure over time. The occupation was found to date from the Rillito, Rincon, and Tanque Verde phases of the Tucson Basin sequence.
