_3:16 am_[katyushak] Wedding in India - photographer advice! I was hoping to maybe find some helpful advice on this topic here. My fiance Sudip and I got engaged a couple of month ago, and we are planning on having a wedding in Delhi, India. We both live in USA right now, so the planning is a bit difficult. We would like to find a talented photographer for our wedding that would not be too expensive, but we are somewhat at a loss at how to go about finding one, when we are not in the country ourselves. A lot of the high-end expensive photo studios in India have nice websites that we can look over on the web, but many of the more reasonably-priced photographers seem to often not have a website at all. We would like to find a talented photojournalist - someone who can capture the emotions of the moment with their camera! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (Comment on this)

_4:32 am_[xenax] Inspirational Travel to India Hey Fellow Desis...well last year after the bad economy hit in the U.S., I decided to travel and work in India for some time. I always thought the economic Indian boom was all media hype. But then after living in Bangalore for about 10 months I realized how much opportunity there is. On the flip side, there is a majority of the population that remains poor if not poorer. Almost like the hidden dark side that many middle and upper class Indians don't want to deal with. Well I interned with this Travel Magazine and it got me thinking....tons of people should take advantage of the Indian economy or help give back to the community somehow. I think we all know that India is going to be a major economic player in the coming decade and us being desis have a great advantage in that we are familiar with the culture, the language, the people, etc. Soo long story short, I came up with the idea for my new company Leave UR Mark. I basically help people sign up for internships or do voluntary work in India. Once people sign up for a certain project, they book their flight and I pick them up from the airport and arrange their accomodation, food, and offer 24/7 support for the duration of their project. I find not only is it a way to do something food for your resume....it's a very enriching experience. It's very different than going to the homeland and visiting relative after relative. You feel like you are part of India and living like a local...perhaps get a taste of how our parents used to live. The year I spent in Bangalore has undoubtedly been the best year of my life and I hope people will take the opportunity to do some inspirational travel. It has changed how I look at myself and how I look at India. Well if you get a chance, take a look at my website: www.leaveurmark.comYou can get in touch with me through my LJ or the contacts provided on the site, if you decide you want a bit of a break from the mundane. -Prachi (4 Comments |Comment on this)

_7:55 am_[bengalibangla] Looking for a room to rent in Mumbai Hello, an indian man (my husband) is looking for a shared accomodation in Mumbai. He's ready to pay 3-4 thousand rupees per month. He needs to stay in Mumbai for 2-3 months only, so there's no question of paying for the whole year in advance. I can assure you that he's very decent and has no bad habits. If anyone knows anything about rooms for rent please do contact me. (Comment on this)

_9:25 am_[hellishutopia] Prita's music. My friend Prita is a singer. We met in our crappy hometown of Orlando, FL through a mutual friend and she's currently living in Montreal and making music. She just put out an LP. It's a poppy sound. She started out less poppy and more.. folk-y? While the sound is poppy, the songs themselves are very emotional. The clips on her website don't quite do the songs justice. I have been a big supporter of her music, but when I heard the clips of her EP, I hesitated to give her feedback, because I thought I would not like her new sound. But I got a copy of her EP from her mom, and have been listening to it non-stop! If any of you have been searching for an indian artist you can relate to and if you actually like pop and rnb... (I was so excited when I heard about Raghav and Jay Sean for the simple fact that they were desi... but then I heard their music..) check her out! Myspace link: http://www.myspace.com/pritarocksor her website. www.pritamusic.comShe's unique and talented. And I might be slightly biased because I'm her friend, but I've been listening to her EP nonstop for three days, so it can't ALL be my bias. For reference, the music I like is stuff like John Legend, Tracy Chapman, India Arie, Jewel, Fiona Apple...If you like stuff like that, you might like Prita. Her EP is titled Spread the Word. If you know anyone who might be into her... SPREAD THE WORD. (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_6:16 pm_[gujushorty712] interfaith relationships Hi Everyone,I was wondering how you all manage your interfaith relationships. I am Hindu (not very religious) and am dating a Catholic and wonder about our future. We discussed raising children w/ both faiths and having them choose, but it seems easier said than done. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated. I'm mostly looking for opinions from people who are dealing with differences between Eastern and Western religions. Thanks (4 Comments |Comment on this)

_12:45 am_[travestir] Manipuri theatre Hello, everyone,I'm interested in different forms of theatre, particularly all-female troupes. In my Googling I stumbled upon information about Manipuri theatre. Napi Shumang Leela, all-female troupes, and their male impersonator actors, the nupishabi, especially interested me. (Note: I know nothing of the language, so I have no idea if these are correct transliterations.) More info can be found here and here, but obviously English data is lacking, and that vital source of academic information, YouTube, has nothing on Napi Shumang Leela specifically. If anyone could provide more information, pictures, or clips, I'd greatly appreciate it!(Cross-posted at asianstudies.) (Comment on this)

_8:18 pm_[queerunity] Diversity Lesson 101: LGBTQ Asians Asians are considered racial minorities, but there is very little effort to include their people, customs, and or specific issues within the context of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Community. They are overshadowed by other races and rarely taken into account.Learn more and share your experience, by checking out:Diversity Lesson 101: LGBTQ Asians (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_11:07 pm_[dancinggurl01] Indian Movies...an Anomaly on the Foreign Movie Scene Hey everyone, I just created a post on my blog that looks at Indian films, mostly the decline in quality. This is, of course, my opinion but I'm curious to hear what other people think. :)http://sospokesaroj.wordpress.com/2008/12/26/indian-moviesan-anomaly-on-the-foreign-movie-scene/- Saroj (25 Comments |Comment on this)

_10:07 am_[forgottenbelief] India Tattoo I'm cross posting this a few places, because I'm looking for ideas. My current tattoo is a celtic knot with the word 'freedom' in gaelic above it. The word has personal (not political) meaning to it, and it represents both the time I spent in Ireland, as well as my family's Irish ancestory.I lived/worked in Mumbai for six months, and came to love the city, and it's people. I have wonderful friends from there that I continue to visit every chance I get. I want to get a tattoo to memorialize the time I spent there.I already know that I'm getting the word 'hope' (asha, I believe) done in sanskrit. But in keeping with the theme, I also want to get an image to go along with it. Something small, maybe 3"x3" in diameter, so it needs to be fairly simple. I'm having a hard time coming up with something - someone mentioned a lotus flower to me before, but the lotus doesn't really resonate with me.Any and all suggestions are welcome! I'll post pictures once I get it done. Thanks so much! (7 Comments |Comment on this)

_10:02 am_[redredwine] Nuclear Saftey http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7766789.stmthe article describes India-Russia signing a civilian nuclear deal where Russia, one of the three countries that will be doing so, will build three reactors in South India. I am wondering about your thoughts on:--Civilian Nuclear Technology, which is still controversial in regards with it's waste disposal, being implemented this widely in India. --If you agree with the CNT proliferation, do you think the US and other countries should expand it's numbers of nuclear plants to provide energy for it's civilians. (I say US since I live here, but from the looks of it, the world is headed in that direction to feed the growing demand for power.)--Or should we be looking for more alternative sources, and cutting down on power consumption. Given that, doing so will not light our cities as brightly as we currently do and other consequences that accompany this method) (I do request that the comments be civil and constructive. Satire, sarcasm and deconstructive opinions have their place on one's own journals. thank you.) (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_2:36 pm_[13oct] So, where are you from? My Dad's Indian (originally from Kerala but bought up in Chennai/ Madras) and my Mum's from Nepal. She's Hindu and he's Christian. I was brought up with both religions. My husband's from Madras, but his parents just happen to be from Kerala. Yeah, I do not have a very traditional Indian family. :)With regard to my kids, one was born in Chicago, USA, and the second one in London, UK. One has American citizenship, and the other has Indian citizenship. Both my husband and I have retained our Indian passports. Thanks to my husband's job, we get transferred ever so often. So far we have lived in the US, Canada and now the UK and we will be transferring to Dubai come Jan '09. (I secretly think that my husband is aiming to live in every continent possible!)My Q is to all those who grew up with mixed heritages. How do you guys identify with your country/or the country that you feel that you belong to... I mean, IMHO if you are born and brought up in a country, that makes you a citizen of that country. In every possible way. But, that being said, what happens if you live in a different country every two years... what happens then?I'm looking for people who have gone thru the same thing... coz some day when my kid asks me, ok what country do I belong to... I kinda want to know what to say. My plan as of now is to say ok, the country to whose passport you carry and the country were your parents come from and the country you have lived longest in... LOL!Hit me with your experiences, opinions, ideas, anything on the topic above. (9 Comments |Comment on this)

_10:44 pm_[chrys20] Are there any desis here from Sweden? When I was in Stockholm this year I found a chain of clothing stores called Indiska which sells Indian/bohemian style clothing. All the models on their photographs looked distinctly ethnic, i.e. not the tall angular blondes you see everywhere on the streets there. Check out their site, there's some sitar pop music playing and the models look kinda desi. Any Swedes know what this is about? It's pity I didn't have time to shop, or I would've checked it out.http://www.madeinindiska.seCurrent Mood: curious (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_5:40 pm_[dancinggurl01] Indian Communities as Closed Entities "To say India is diverse is stating the obvious. There are thousands of dialects, each falling into a several different language families. For each dialect, there is its own unique culture. The food is different, the religious practices are different, heck the styles of song and dance are different. As Indians from these groups move abroad, they bring with them their own rich, cultural heritage. Oftentimes, they spawn cultural organizations based on their individual, cultural identities. Yet at the end of the day, the Punjabis stick with the Punjabis, the Malayalees with the Malayalees, the Maharashtrians with the Maharashtrians, and so on and so forth. There is TANA, there is FOKANA, there is (insert other Indian organization acronym of choice). There is very little cross-talk, except perhaps among the younger generations. Yet heaven forbid the South Indian child learns bhangra, or the North Indian child learns kuchipudi, or (even worse) if there is dating or (dare I say it) marriage across cultural lines…"The rest of the post is here:http://sospokesaroj.wordpress.com/2008/11/18/indian-communities-as-closed-entities/ (6 Comments |Comment on this)
