The Monte Carlo simulation code of EGSnrc is used for the depth dose calculations. Two clinical like situations were simulated-dose calculation point beyond the lung tissue volume and dose calculation point within the lung tissue volume. The variation of ICF with lung thicknesses and positions was studied. ICF values were obtained for the similar situations from a commercially available treatment planning system, Theraplan Plus. Percentage depth dose data obtained from Monte Carlo simulation is well matching with the published measurement data. ICFs for lung tissue inhomogenity calculated using the Monte Carlo code are in good agreement with Theraplan Plus TPS values for small inhomogenity thicknesses. These results can be used for the verification of TPS calculation or manual treatment time calculation.

In some studies the absence of patellar resurfacing results in residual anterior knee pain in over 10% of patients. One form of treatment which may be used in an endeavour to reduce this is circumferential patellar rim electrocautery. This is believed to partially denervate the patella. However, there is no evidence of the efficacy of this procedure, nor do we know if it results in harm. A retrospective comparative cohort study was performed of 192 patients who had undergone a primary total knee replacement with the porous coated Low Contact Stress rotating platform prosthesis without patellar resurfacing between 2003 and 2007. In 98 patients circumferential electrocautery of the patellar rim was performed and in 94 patients it was not. The two groups were matched for gender and age. The general Oxford Knee Score and the more specific patellar score for anterior knee pain were used to assess patient outcom...

We also present an algorithm for scoring individual members based on the movie rating and also a neural network framework for estimating various parameters for combining the individual scores for predictions. Finally, we present an evaluation of our strategies on a sample dataset and examine the results.

The relationship between the type of cigarette smoked and bladder cancer risk was examined in dat... more The relationship between the type of cigarette smoked and bladder cancer risk was examined in data from a hospital-based case-control study. Information on smoking, including filtered and nonfiltered cigarette use, was available for 899 male and 427 female patients and 2713 male and 1243 female age-matched controls interviewed in 20 hospitals from nine cities in the US between 1969 and 1984. Smokers of filtered cigarettes had a slightly reduced risk of bladder cancer relative to smokers of nonfiltered cigarettes (odds ratio 0.64, 95% confidence interval 0.38 to 1.10 among male smokers; odds ratio 0.74, 95% confidence interval 0.37 to 1.48 among female smokers). In both sexes there was no statistically significant reduction in risk among switchers from nonfiltered to filtered cigarettes compared with lifetime nonfiltered cigarette smokers (odds ratio 0.93, 95% confidence interval 0.71 to 1.24 among male smokers; odds ratio 0.76, 95% confidence interval 0.40 to 1.46 among female smokers). The causal implications of these findings, in particular a possible initiation effect of tobacco smoke on bladder carcinogenesis, are discussed.

A total of 342 male and 220 female leukemia cases and two series of patients Hith non-tobacco related condittons (non-cancer controls: N = 9349 and cancer controls: .V = 9846) were available for study. Analyses were carried out for all leukemia cases combined and for ANLL (.V = 749). ALL (N = 52). CML (N = 78). and CLL (:V = 57) separately vs both control groups. In addition to crude and age-adjusted odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals. logistrc regresston models including potenttal confounding varrables were used. No posrttve associatron with smokrng was seen either for all cases combined or for any of the four specific morphologic types. Tobacco smoking Leukemia Morphology

Consistent with our thalamocingulate hypothesis, we found that the only regions activated with the cries compared to the control noises in the groupaveraged fMRI data were the anterior cingulate and right medial prefrontal cortex. Here, we report the results of a more rigorously designed follow-up study of 10 physically and psychiatrically healthy, right-handed, first-time mothers who were all breastfeeding and had healthy infants 4-8 weeks old. Consistent with our thalamocingulate hypothesis again, we found statistically increased anterior cingulate, mid-cingulate and thalamic activity with the cries compared to the control noises in the group-averaged fMRI data. Other regions of activation included the left middle and superior frontal, right inferior frontal, right middle temporal, and left superior temporal gyri.
