Magnetic pickups have ruled the music industry for the latter half of the last century and into the new millennium. Since the 1970s, there have been attempts to replace magnetic pickups with optical pickups using photonic sensors. A major problem that faces both options is determining the plucking direction so that the full magnitude of the string oscillation can be used to produce sound. Optical pickups provide better options to deal with this problem...Three possible solutions to this problem will be discussed: Virtually Rotating Sensors , Mechanically Rotating Sensors:, and Using Light Sensors in Conjunction with a Piezo Element (Hybrid Sensor) , as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each approach --Abstract, page iii

It causes one or more partials to be heard alongside the fundamental. In this study, multiphonics on a grand piano were analyzed. For this instrument, the multiphonic technique consists of using a plectrum to slightly press the piano string at a predetermined point in order to rise up the desired partials. The location of the plectrum along the string determines which partials are damped and which are preserved. The partials that have a node at the plectrum position are more pronounced in the sound. For an artistic use of this technique, the purpose is to obtain a piano sound that could be perceived as different tones sounding together, therefore the plectrum position is adjusted so as to obtain sounds composed by many partials. In the experiments, a high-speed line-scan camera was used to detect the motion of the piano string and audio recordings were also obtained for comparison. The camera was equipp...

This set-up consists of a high frame-rate line-scan camera, a custom-built optical lens system, and a mirror arrangement. The optical tubes are designed to capture maximum amount of light and to offer sufficient magnification. The second dimension of vibration is obtained using a mirror at a 45º angle with respect to the camera plane. The experimental set-up makes it possible to perform accurate non-invasive measurements of the vibration of various parts of musical instruments, such as the strings, bridges, necks, etc. This set-up has been calibrated and successfully used to capture piano and bass guitar string motion. An experimental monochord has been constructed using a piano string in order to analyze the three main string excitation techniques: plucking, striking, and bowing. Also, we have researched the virtual sides deeply in these areas. Our study consists of a B2 level language learner (CEF), the learners’ vocabulary resource, the methodologies used in vocabulary teaching, analysing the lessons and their assessment with feedback and results. We have taken the data from the departments of computer and linguistics sciences. Today, the applications and studies over speech are focused on text and/or context, but this approach mostly remains lacking about the main thing that people wanted to say, for example metaphors are generally used to explain a situation with reverse meaning. Emotion recognition from speech can be performed in three steps: filtering, analysis, and determination of the speaker’s emotion. First, if speech is not recorded at an isolated environment, speech data is filtered to clean out the noise produced by other speakers or environmental sounds in the conversation. Second, magnitude changes in the frequency spectrum of the speech signal are analyzed. Momentarily speeches do not have any text; therefore, we have to analyze speech rapidly. Then we should analyze sentimental elements. According to the developed method, definite magnitude fluctuations in a conversation show emotional changes. Third, the speaker’s emotions are classified using commonly used classification methods like neural networks or decision trees. First purpose of our work is finding main message in people’s speeches using intonations. Second purpose of our work is making people and computers communicate naturally with speaking.

The classification of Ottoman Turkish texts from Tanzimat Era by the computer according to variou... more The classification of Ottoman Turkish texts from Tanzimat Era by the computer according to various criteria is important especially when a large number of texts are involved. In order to determine whether the subject or person was examined in the text favorably or critically, there is a need to create an emotion dictionary consisting of the words in the text. The text data taken in the form of the Latin letters was examined by the computer using various methods after certain preperation and clean-up procedures. The classification of a text as positive or negative requires language specific dictionaries. In the same way, relating texts with emotional states requires the same resource. While such dictionaries are common in English, attempts at creating such a dictionary in Turkish are either left incomplete or not made public. In our study, native Turkish speakers were asked to make choices about the positivity/negativity and the emotional perception of the words in the text using an interface, and a first step was taken towards creating a “Turkish Emotion Dictionary” open to the public and researchers by recording the responses. In our study, the special case of Turkish words that originated in Arabic and Persian was examined. As the source text, Ibrahim Sinasi’s Mukaddime and Ahmet Hasim’s Piyale Foreword were used, and the responses from the test users about the words in the text with Arabic and Persian origin were recorded by a program according to whether it’s positive, negative or neutral, as well as the emotions inspired by that word in order to examine the emotion content of the entire text. Using the Emotion Template application, an idea was also formed about the perception of the users for the words of Arabic or Persian origin.

musical instruments. In this study we present an application that simulates string motion using
numerical methods. The user can adjust several physical parameters of vibration, and after the
resulting motion is calculated for a specified period of time, he/she can view the resulting simulation
in different ways. The application provides both a pedagogical tool to explain string
motion, and a virtual experiment bench where effects of different parameters can be observed.
This simulation software will lead to design and implementation of more optimized digital
stringed musical instruments which can capture string motion more accurately.

camera output images were processed, converted into numerical data, and analyzed in the
frequency domain. The audio and camera recorded waveforms are presented for comparison,
along with their spectrograms. The camera signal is cleaner and less prone to noise than the
audio recording. We have observed that using the multiphonics on the grand piano causes the
damping of many of the original partials present on an open string, i.e., allowing only a
selected few to sound. It has been noticed that even the selected partials in the multiphonics
were damped, resulting in softer sounds than the open string.

recent one being the Apple Watch. The creation of this company is more humble, and is the result of a conjuncture of various

individuals, an engineering-oriented social environment, business angels willing to invest in a new start-up company, and the
developments in technology appearing at the right time and place have all contributed to this creation. It took engineering
knowledge, visionary management and a business outlook to succeed. Individual entrepreneurs and developing countries

similar successes for themselves and their countries. Especially universities are encouraged to launch start-up companies and

for Apple’s success may be very different and that a legendary image of the company with an ardent fan base may obscure the

The epos' theme is the battles of Kyrghyz People with others, especially Kalmuks. Thanks to advances in information technologies, the analysis of languages with statistical and rule based computational linguistic methods has become possible. In this context, nowadays the subject of "Collocation" is studied with computational methods. The study of "Oath, War and Loot" concepts in Seyitbek Epos with computational modeling methods was undertaken because this text contains rich semantic conceptualorientational collocation data fit to be used in software. The epos was digitized as a plaintext (.txt) file, the collocation vocabulary was processed in AntConc 3.5.9 (2020) software and the collocations in the text were studied using different statistical analyses such as Log-likelihood, MI score, T-score, and Dice coefficient. In this study where statistical significance was used, algorithms that measure how many times the words have appeared together were used. In this way, the subject of collocation was evaluated by comparing both collocation vocabulary findings detected by the researchers using linguistic methods, and those detected by natural language processing methods.
