Although these changes are indicators of growth and development in our standards of living., they have also caused several disasterous problems and irreversible disruptions in the physical world we live, in because these changes are realized without due consideration to the environmental quality for the sake of rapid development.

Adapting the system to high concentrations of sulfur compounds without creating unmanageable sludges, while decreasing the high sulfide levels in the effluents was the main objective of this study. Synthetic activated sludge media were fed with high but

Good quality emission data are a prerequisite for a number of EU directives and other international agreements. In particular, they are needed for the Kyoto Protocol to the UNFCCC, the European Climate Change Programme ECCP, and for the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution, CLRTAP, and its protocols. In order to assess data ranges and uncertainties, data quality has to be known. This is not only important because of the use of emission data as input to atmospheric dispersion modelling, but as well as compliance with emission ceilings (NEC Directive, Gothenburg Protocol, Kyoto targets) has to be assessed.

Biogenic NMVOC emissions from forests in Greece were calculated for the reference year 1990 on a monthly basis. The calculation was based on forest areas coverage data from the Greek Ministry of Agriculture, emission rate factors and biomass factors proposed in the literature for the European — Mediterranean vegetation, ambient air temperature data from the Greek National Meteorology Service and solar irradiation data from an existing data base constructed for solar application purposes. In this work, emissions of NMVOC from four categories of forests (resulting from aggregation of 14 initial tree species) have been calculated. Four kinds of NMVOC compounds (or families of compounds) have been distinguished: isoprene, α-pinene, other monoterpenes and unknown NMVOC.
