To comprehend the molecular structures and their characteristics the students need to understand related subjects such as Lewis dot structures, molecular geometry, bond polarity, molecular polarity, resonance and hybridization. This study investigated the conceptual understanding levels and misconceptions held by university students about molecular structures subject. The sample of the study comprised of 88 undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Mathematics and Science Education, Faculty of Education, Turkey. The participants responded to open-ended and interview questions regarding the subject. Students' responses were analyzed and their conceptual understanding levels were determined. The results indicated that students had lack of knowledge and misconceptions about the subject although they studied it in the university. Especially, they had poor knowledge about the molecular geometry, molecular polarity, resonance, and hybridization in molecular structures except for Lewis dot structures of molecules. Accordingly, implications have been made for more effective teaching approaches to ensure better understanding of the subjects.

Textbooks are the most reliable information source books when other sources of information such as the internet, educational games, demonstrations etc. are inadequate. Since students often gain knowledge from their own books by themselves, the information are of scientific value, accurate and reliable [2]. It was found that textbooks contain incorrect and inadequate information as a result of research conducted by The Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) [3]. This research was aimed to evaluate teachers' and students' opinions about secondary education chemistry textbooks. Working group of this study includes respectively chemistry teachers, secondary school students and Dokuz Eylul University students of chemistry education. A questionnaire was applied to determine teachers' and students' opinions related to textbooks, at the same time semi structured interviews were conducted with teachers and students. Applied questionnaire consists of seven sub-dimensions. These subdimensions are general physical properties, cover features, interior cover features, preparatory studies, evaluation studies, content and method. Opinions of teachers and students on this dimensions are determined by three evaluation criteria being yes, no and partly. In the results of the semi structured interviews, it was determined that the content of textbooks was very intensive for the secondary school students and the preparatory studies were insufficient. In addition to these, it was found that the activities in the textbooks were few.

Research paper thumbnail of An epistemological inquiry into organic chemistry education: exploration of undergraduate students' conceptual understanding of functional groups

Chemistry Education. Research and Practice, 2016

This study sought to determine the levels of conceptual understanding of undergraduate students r... more This study sought to determine the levels of conceptual understanding of undergraduate students regarding organic compounds within different functional groups. A total of 60 students who were enrolled in the Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education of a Faculty of Education at a state university in Turkey and who had followed an Organic Chemistry Laboratory Course participated in the study. The data were collected using two tools: functional group worksheets and concept maps. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations were used in analyzing the data. The findings showed that the students generally had low levels of understanding of concepts relating to functional groups, and they exhibited a considerable number of misconceptions. Considering the findings more fully, it was determined that students have remarkable misconceptions and low levels of understanding about certain topics regarding functional groups, including the physical properties of functional groups, intermolecular bonds, acidity and basicity, reduction and oxidation, stereoisomerism and structural isomerism, and aromaticity and aliphaticity, as well as other organic chemistry concepts (e.g. decarboxylation, oxyacide, and phenol). The results suggest that since students are unable to adequately comprehend the subjects of general chemistry, such as intramolecular and intermolecular bonds, acidity and basicity, oxidation and reduction and determination of molecular structures, they fail to accurately transfer their knowledge to learning about organic chemistry. In order to promote students' understanding of functional groups and prevent related misconceptions, it is recommended that basic chemistry topics should be reinforced, and the relationship between students' current knowledge and the new information to be learned in organic chemistry should be emphasized with the help of activities in which various forms of thinking are used.

It was applied on 110 university students. The reliability and validity tests and item analyses were conducted in relation to the test, and the difficulty and discrimination indices of the items were detected. The reliability coefficient of the test was found to be 0.856 while the mean difficulty value of the test was 0.487. According to the findings obtained from the second tier of the test containing open end questions, the students had a great deal of wrong information and numerous misconceptions in relation to the molecular geometry. Such statements as “atoms move in the resonance structure” and “bond angles of two molecules having a trigonal pyramidal shape cannot be different” are counted among the most important misconceptions determined in the study. Key words:...

We sought answers to questions such as, ‘What are the students’ levels of performance?’ and ‘What is the relation between the average scores for performance and achievement?’. This was done by using the I diagram as a tool within a Guided Inquiry Learning Approach (GILA), which is based on the constructivist theory. The sample consisted of sophomore students (N = 31) taking the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory-I course and attending the Chemistry Teaching Program of the Faculty of Education of a state university in the Aegean region of Turkey. During the analyses, the students attempted to solve specific problems and find the results of their qualitative analyses as they followed the sections of I diagram step by step under the guidance of researchers. They also tried to find solutions to problems through logical reasoning and discussions with each other. ...
