The buzz-words are `virtual teaching' and `learning anytime, anywhere', and they are having an especially large affect on universities. Four universities in Baden,in South-West Germany, are also gaining experience in this area thanks to an extensiveinterdisciplinary pilot project. The main part of the paper focuses on the means and methodsused and developed within the project. Moreover, we point out some observations we have madeattempting to take the first steps towards a structural change in the universities.

Recently their combination is dicussed. However , such a general solution is not at hand yet. Fortunately, a thorough investigation of the application and a thoughtful decision for an advanced system using the appropriate of both reasoning paradigms may also lead to a concise and simple implementation, even in cases which at rst sight seem not to t in the declarative framework. Here we describe our experiences with a linguistics problem.

There, speci c problems arise: Due to the combination of deduction and inheritance, (a) deduction can take place depending on inherited facts, thus raising indirect con icts, and (b) also the class hierarchy and-membership is subject to deduction. From this point of view, we investigate the application of the extension semantics of Default Logic to deductive object-oriented database languages. By restricting the problem to Horn programs and a special type of defaults tailored to the semantics of inheritance, a forwardchaining construction of extensions is possible. This construction is compared with a solution as implemented in the F-Logic system Florid which is based on a combination of classical deductive xpoints and an inheritance-trigger mechanism. The paper is a condensed version of MK98].
