skill that differs significantly from the
kind of survival techniques needed to attend to
the unpredictable dangers of a pre-indu trial
world. Jona than Crary's meticulously
researched Suspensions of Perception: Attention,
Spectacle, and Modern Culture speaks to
this difference. Beginning with a general summary
that sets out the emerging philosophical,
social and scienti fie models of attention vision
and subjectivity in the nineteenth centu􀂛, Crar;
concludes that the perceptual overload and fragmentation
of this period set the stage for contemporary
views of attention (and attention
deficit). He also sees the nineteenth century as
the point at which attention became an area of
inquiry, proposing that ideas about attention
were informed by how ideas about visual perception
and the world we attend to began significantly
and simultaneously to change at this
time.

Using the neurocultural perspective, the book explores how everything in the world is filtered back and forth through the brain and culture. The thrust of the book, therefore, is to explore the power of art in creating a bridge between cultural and neuroscientific lines of inquiry. Looking at both clinical and non-clinical populations, the text examines historical foundations, distinguishes congenital/developmental conditions from those that are acquired, and emphasizes how the brain constructs our sensory experiences.
