It has deep impact on the socioeconomic and political life of the state. Assam appears to be a classic case of financial exclusion. Micro credit facilities have become very effective in empowering female workers, particularly in the rural areas of Assam. Women's empowerment through microfinance with SHGs would prove beneficial not only to the individual women, but also to the entire community and family. The paper argues that microfinance is a viable option to achieving the goals of women's access to sustainable employment and income, conveyed by women's SHGs, allowing women to contribute more to the generation of income and thus boost women's well-being.
