V TH AND XV TH CENTURIES A GROUP OF EARTHENWARE CANDLE IN THE ADANA MUSEUM In human history, ligh... more V TH AND XV TH CENTURIES A GROUP OF EARTHENWARE CANDLE IN THE ADANA MUSEUM In human history, light/lightning, which began to be crucial in the process where the functionality of brain and the biological clock come to coincide, has so far maintained its importance and taken its part in the list of basic needs of energy and light. Having to be controlled by homo erectus, fire was also used as a lightning tool, apart from that of nourishment, for the functionality of brain and the fulfilment of needs in the dark hours after the sunset. However, although the lightning tools changed their form or shape in accordance with the period technologies, their essence always remained same. Earthenware candles, one of the lightning tools made used of in human life, are observed to meet the main purpose. Earthenware candles, which was seen to be used for a long time to this purpose, continued to be used until firstly the proliferation of candle usage and then the invention of electricity. For these reasons, earthenware candles which project onto themselves the social life, customs, cultural values and physical structure, being shaped by climatic factors, of the period has now succeed in becoming a subject of investigation. Furthermore, because of the economic and cultural impacts of the periods, we also see to a high degree the simpleformed earthenware candles as well as those produced in various technics, forms and arts. Earthenware candles, whose form, value and artistic features vary due to political and economic impacts, take part within the daily usage tools, generally in Anatolia, particularly in Adana Museum. In this study, we aim at analyzing earthenware candles present in Adana Museum as candles belonging to the time between 5 th and 15 th centuries, in which political life were condensed and at the same time a cultural mosaic with artistic interaction was experienced in commercial life, in terms of form, technic and cultural and physical features.
