Just found this community :) I'm Laura and I have 3 brats. 5 year old tuxedo cat named Magic who is the Queen of the world, 2 year old deaf Italian Greyhound named Sicily who thinks she's a Rottweiler, and 2 year old German shorthaired pointer named Sadie who thinks she's a cat. I also have Asperger's, bipolar, assorted learning disabilities, Rheumatoid Arthritis, anxiety disorder, and non-24-hour sleep-wake syndrome, and probably a few more that I'm forgetting. The dogs are Katrina babies, Sadie was found wandering in New Orleans, and Sicily's mom was, and at 7 weeks old Sicily was dropped at a shelter and they said she's deaf, kill her. I brought her home at 10 weeks old, she was only 2 pounds. I had already had my cat for 2 years, but she's bigger than Sicily so that was okay. Sis is 8 pounds fully grown. Sadie is about 30 but she thinks she's the size of the other two which makes life interesting. I've caught her on top of the fridge, and she just looks at me like but you let the cat do it. I've taught the dogs sign language and they're doing well with it. My friends always say that if they didn't know they were deaf, they'd never be able to tell. The only difference is that I talk to them with my hands, and I can't call them if they're upstairs. The critters keep me grounded and I don't know what I'd do without them. I plan on adopting more special needs pets when I have more space. I think the disability that makes it hardest to deal with them is the sleep disorder, basically my internal clock thinks there's more than 24 hours in a day, so I keep really odd hours. It's good for being a firefighter, but not so much for having furry kids. Them being deaf helps a lot, because they want me in their sight at all times, so when I'm asleep they're usually laying right up against me so they can feel if I get up. They've been known to follow me straight into the shower. Since they're so clingy, they tend to sleep when I do and get up when I do, so it makes things easier. Except now I have major trouble sleeping if they're NOT in the bed under the covers :) The cat sleeps on my pillow.

So that's my little family. Sicily is in my icon, and I have other pics if anyone wants to see them. I've been severely neglecting my updating lately, but I love making new friends and I look forward to talking with y'all :)

Mod post.... Sort of, but not really. Hi,
I'm sorry I have neglected this community. I didn't realize there were four people in here. Well, two others besides Herbie and I. I am your moderator Dawnielle. If you have any questions, you can address them to me. I'm going to try to advertize this community to some places I know of on LJ, so that maybe we can get some more action in here. If any of you know of any places to advertize, feel free, but please don't spam. Make sure it's alright with the community you're advertizing to that you put a little add in about us. Again, I'm very sorry for not seeing you guys in here and welcoming you. So with out further ado, welcome to the community and I hope we can make this in to what it's supposed to be. A fun and safe place to talk about our awesome pets and our disabilities!
Thanks,
Dawnielle

Hello there! I'm Amber, and I have an African Grey parrot named Athena. She's 9 years old and awfully adorable.

I have a form of autism, so it makes dealing with her tough sometimes, since I can't get inside her mind...Anyone have any tips? Especially to get her to stop freakin' biting...
