Archive python-ideas mailing list in favour of Discourse? (original) (raw)

Shall we archive the python-ideas mailing list in favour of the Ideas category here on Discourse?
There have been no threads so far this year and just three last year. There were 86 threads in 2023, and 222 in 2022.
The Ideas category is very busy with around 35 threads per month (420/year).
We’ve been using Discourse for other discussions and have archived at least python-dev,
python-committers and typing-sig.

It definitely seems like an ex-mailing-list.

The migration from the mailing list to Discourse is complete, the mailing list can be archived.

I’ll request postmasters to archive the list.

Is it possible to migrate python-ideas into discourse somehow?
It would be nice if there was one place where people could search for previous discussions especially for the ideas category where a high proportion of ideas have already been discussed before.

It is difficult, but not impossible, to migrate a mailing list to Discourse. I’ve only done it up front when starting a new Discourse, several years ago. I’m not certain how smooth things would go importing into a Discourse that’s already up and running with content. IIRC basically you’ll need to export the entire list in mbox format and then there are some ruby scripts that can process and import them to Discourse. The results in my case were passable if not perfect.

This has been done. Thanks as always goes to our unsung postmaster hero Mark Sapiro.
The archives of course have been preserved.

Thanks all and especially to Mark!
I’ve updated the info at Mailing Lists | Python.org to the past tense and mention it’s archived.
